This series should be called On The Psychiatrist's Couch, with Tom Clarkson.

His interview technique is largely great, and he really gets a lot out of each of these characters, and most are interviewed all the time.

Thought the extensive probing of Charles Leclerc over the death of his Dad and Godfather Jules Bianchi was a bit much, personally.

Was very interested to learn Pierre Gasly and Estaban Ocon can't stand each other and don't talk despite being karting buddies.

Strangely, in the Ocon interview nothing about this was mentioned even though they discussed his karting days at length.

After listening to the Grosjean and Villeneuve interviews I've found myself being more fond of the two.  And I really didn't like Jacques before.

The Herbert interview was great also. A shame he didn't have more time to ask about his Lotus, Jaguar and Sauber days.

Yeah, I got the impression Gasly volunteered that information and his podcast was recorded after Ocon's.

Interesting detail this year!

I really enjoyed the Herbert one too, lots of detail about his crash I didn't know (and I've read Herbert's autobiograpy!)

Great podcasts on a whole, but after listening to the last one with Rosberg I have really grown to dislike the guy, the sense of entitlement in him is just huge, and on the top of the fact that he is a quitter.

I didn't mind Rosberg.

He comes across as extremely intelligent and very highly educated.

Interesting to see how much brain power he used beating Hamilton in 2016!

Very insightful podcast. Great to listen to Jackie.

Getting a bit tired of Tom Clarkson though.

On his 'marginal games' in 2016:
NR: "Another big one from that year was the gloves. I worked on my gloves to remove any kind of seams or any kind of patches that were between my finger and the clutch pedal, to really get the best possible feel and make it as thin as possible. That really helped me as well, going away from the standard way the Puma glove was done to making it custom made just for myself [] I had a string of four/five races were I nailed the starts and then Lewis was wondering what the hell is going on, why is he doing his starts so well, and then he took over that glove design as well"

I like how Mercedes once brought out a story which completely contradicted this (as in, they worked with Puma to find solutions to their start issues since both drivers struggled that year), but looks like he is still running with his version of the story xD

Nico one week, JYS the next?!

Who's next? Button? Whitmarsh?

I'll listen to it tomorrow. Nice to see it's a little longer and I'm sure he's plenty to say. Agree that TC is a little patronising and manafactured. The guests like him though.

Clarkson realises he suddenly has a much bigger podium and a lot more viewers, so he is starting to feel himself a little bit. We often talk about drivers in that respect, but trust me some journalists or ''paddock guests'' are a lot worse.

I guess he's still trying to keep the psychological advantage.

Regardless of whether this story is true, overall I do admire his effort. I've never heard a driver work so hard on himself to try and make a difference.

And it's all a huge compliment to Lewis that Nico needed to commit his life to this extent, plus some luck, to steal a title from him.

I do agree on manufactured, not sure about patronising, but maybe I'm not familiar enough with that word.

What I in particular don't like is how he seems to try and force his guests into saying something, as if he needs a headline for his article, which frankly he doesn't.

For example:

Tom: I’m going to have one more go at this, because I think particularly for the younger audience, they’ve all heard of Sir Jackie Stewart, they know your record, they know how many races you’ve won, but what made you so special? Let’s take qualifying, pole positions.
Jackie: See qualifying wasn’t important then.
Tom: You’ve still got 17 poles! Was it under brakes, was it… what was it about?
Jackie: (goes on talking about how it wasn't important and how 17 poles doesn't mean much)

I've been enjoying these podcasts quite a lot, especially the old school none PC guys.

The Sir Jackie Stewart one was pretty damn good tbh and I had no idea he had done so much more outside of F1.

The only negative point is the cringy sponsorship(s). It's as if Liberty told Clarkson he would get the podcast if he found the funding himself. He's now advertising cheap online shaving razors alongside headphones ffs in the middle of the podcast. This is a multi-billion company we're talking about.

Yeah I can see sponsorship on a private podcast but it feels cheap in the middle of an official F1 product.

Luca Di Montezemolo on this week.

It was greeted with an "interesting" response from Fernando Alonso

https://twitter.com/...3076814854?s=19

In which he started accusing the Official Formula 1 account of spreading fake news. It was all rather odd, as all it was doing was providing literal quotes from Luca from his interview to the podcast but Fernando claimed he didn't say the thing he actually did say.

Looking forward to when he manages to get hold of Eddie Irvine! Patrick Head another which would be rather entertaining.

So far this year I have found Kimi and Luca good, DC so so.

This would have been a great moment for Alonso to just be quiet and let it all slide. Perhaps he meant to say that Luca never said this to him personally at the time, but still. His tweet only enforces the comments of Luca. Which is unfortunate because I largely disagree with Luca, as the main reason was Ferrari not being strong enough and he completely dances around that little fact. Without Alonso (or maybe Hamilton) as a driver in those Ferrari's, people would have never spoken about any 'lost' titles.

I guess he assumed it was something out of context/made up, since those quotes were published before the podcast (with the evidence) was published.

Whats even more that Luca clearly said he think Alonso is one of those drivers who had that "extra bit" like Michael, so in that regard as driver he rates Alonso among the best of the best and even above driver like Kimi who did won champioship with them....but on more personal level it sounded like he liked Kimi more, cause Kimi was much more of a team-player, while Alonso was more about just himself and didnt stick with the team as much when things went badly.

So I think he speaks quite fairly about Alonso and that its not really anything new that we wouldnt know about Alonso's character already. So ye, perhaps this is something that Montezemolo never said to Alonso himself, but I dont think this is the first time we have heard him say this about Alonso...or perhaps im confusing this with some-one else who has said similar stuff about Alonso before. Either way Alonso should really listen the comments himself first hand before making angry tweets like that, but then again Im not surprised to see him react this way, as he is the kind of person who clearly cant see that fault in himself.

Not sure why anyone would be surprised by Alonsos hot headed comments, it has been clear for a long time the way the last decade of his F1 career unfolded... it burns him. And will continue to do so.

I think deep down with time, upon reflection, he'll realise he must shoulder responsibility. Not all his fault of course but certainly he was his worst enemy at times.

Pretty sure there's media rules on providing actual quotes, whether in writing or not. You can't quote someone saying something they didn't. They didn't need any evidence of it in audio. If they quote him personally, he had to have said it.

In the tweet he replies to it provides direct quotes, which is why I found it amusing the said they weren't real! The problem with this is that people don't read things these days, so when Alonso dismisses real quotes as fake, you get a wave of people instantly thinking he's been stitched up and directing misplaced anger at the wrong people.

Edit: Just to be clear, I'm not questioning your understanding of the rules Marklar. Alonso should've known these were not a misrepresentation of Luca, but a plain and simple direct quote from an interview.

Fernando showing exactly why Montezemelo said what he said.

Classic Alonso. Too much about 'him', the perception of him in the public eye and his valuable ego.

Alonso becoming the perfect example how someone with incredible driving capabilities can fail on the human side and therefore may not achieve what was within his (driving) capabilities.

Stuff has been mistranslated before, so while it's not made up and perhaps not intentionally mistranslated it can sometimes happen that so much is lost in translation that the meaning changes entirely. This has happened to Alonso himself quite a few times. So in general the thought that something someone is tweeting in quotes could be not entirely the truth is valid.

In this particular case though it's stupid ofc, because
1.) It isnt even Alonso's quote, so outright denying that this was never said is bs. At best you can question it, but...
2.) It's said in the article that the podcast will be published the next day, so you will find out either way if it's true or not.
3.) It's a English podcast, so the entire mistranslation deal cant happen.

I assume Alonso saw the quote and immediately jumped to this conclusion without reading further, *or* his team knows exactly what's up and intentionally claimed it to be fake in order to set the narrative. Many of those who saw Alonso's tweet will not listen to the podcast and always assume that Alonso was hard done by.

Thats my main argument to those who say that "Alonso denied that he didnt know anything about what the team had planned"...I think its incredibly naive to think that Alonso, atleast on some level wouldnt have known about that plan, considering his strategy involved low fuel load....

Anyhow Its just heated comments like that tweet from Alonso that just prove the point, the man is his own worst enemy when he cant keep his emotions in check.

I have listened to some, they are quite nice actually.

The ones I liked the most:

- Ross Brawn (very interesting, although, primarily about Michael, some interesting insights)

- Kimi  (Loved this one, entertaining and finally Kimi speaks at length)

- DC (I don't like DC as he has always seemed sneaky to me, but his story is interesting, although one-sided, as usual)

- Eddie Jordan (thought it was going to be boring, but it is actually quite nice)

Neutral:

- Nico (well, nothing new here, he is quite well articulated but hoped to hear more this time around)

The worst:

- Hamilton (I guess for hardcore fans it might be interesting, but there is literally nothing about F1, I found that boring, and the whole thing about his dog is just cringe worthy)

p.s Alonso.... my god... I really like him on one hand, especially as a driver, but when he starts talking...... It's terrible. He does not really make it easy for himself.

I stopped that one after 5 minutes and then just skimmed through it to find something interesting. No clue what was up with Clarkson there. Maybe it's because it was the first episode and he didnt knew yet what to do exactly.

I think the Hamilton one would have been hard, especially first up, for Clarkson. Lewis doesn't want to talk about F1 at the best of times and Tom was probably worded up beforehand as to what Lewis was happy to talk about. You get the sense talking about F1 tends to bore Lewis.

Fernando probably thought it was an old interview or quote, there is a long history about the press misquoting Alonso, even the famous quote that made Montezemolo tweak his ear was misquoted, He should have known better and listen the podcast before saying anything.

He genuinely looks like an idiot in this one.

Edit: OK so done with the podcast, honestly Montezemolo said mostly great things, and I can see where this "when he is not winning is the team's fault" comes from, Alonso always or 99% of the time operates at very high level, sometimes he even does unthinkable things, so I can see why he demands the same from the team and when some of them can't or screw up, is easy to say Alonso blames the team than owning your mistakes, which is the case of Montezemolo in my opinion.

Is a shame that Fernando remain quiet, probably is the right thing for his legacy, but I beat he has a lot of dirty laundry from his time at Ferrari.
