Do forgive me if I make a little plug for the work of a fellow long time TNF member. who has been posting on this forum for  at least 16 years

Gary Critcher as many of you will know has a career background in broadcasting  on the technical staff of BBC ,ITV,Sky, F1 TV digital , Discovery and several others. As a life long motor racing enthusiast and competitor....  over 40 odd years Gary has purchased a vast collection of photographs and their rights as well as an archive of thousands of hours of racing and behind the scenes footage.

Over the last year Gary has been compiling his first book in 123 pages  softback on calendared art paper for best photo printing clarity his first compilation of  racing images  - but not the usual pictures  these have in the main been taken in pits paddock and infield by competitors , mechanics  and supporters  , so you get an insight in to  off guard moments of famous drivers and engineers and above all the cars at close quarters from the 1960s and 1970s.

Printed in both B&W and colour  with captions and explanatory notes it is lovely  to look through and captures the atmosphere of the period  superbly  -  it is published this week.

It will not be in the shops  it will never be on Amazon. You can mail order it direct from Gary and pay by paypal via his website             http://www.shutterandspeed.com/

Shutter-and-Speed-front-cover.jpg      back-cover-1.jpg

Gary has been tremendously helpful with supplying material for the TNF film shows I have been looking at the book today it would make a lovely Christmas present for your motor racing friends or indeed solve SWMBO present dilemma in buying it for you .

A pound from each sale goes to the  Grand Prix Trust Charity as well. A special version is also available with a DVD from the late brilliant Freddie Barratt films from the early  1960s paddock at Silverstone .

Apology for the plug but I really do think fellow TNfers would like it . Thanks  ( ps I am not in any way involved)

Thanks indeed, Richard. It's been a fun time pulling out sets of negatives and slides that I have had for over twenty years in some cases (and finding some hidden gems along the way), trying to decide which photos to use and then finding their stories. For that I must thank a few TNF habituees; Duncan Rollo, Barry Boor, Tim Murray and also Twinny. Along the way I have been helped with identification for a few pitlane names and faces,  people like David Luff (ex-Brabham, McLaren etc), Bob Dance (Lotus, Brabhams) and Doug Garner (Gold Leaf Team Lotus) stepped up for me and not forgetting the legendary Chalkie Fullalove who actually found for me a set of 35mm colour slides from Indy from 1966, 67,68,69 and 71. After asking if I could scan them for him (which I did) he calmly asked if I'd like the slides themselves! I have used some images from 1969 Indy in the book, namely with the Brabham team and Team Lotus who had a torrid time at Indy that year, so bad that in the end they withdrew their entry and didn't race, so these images, which include Graham Hill, Mario Andretti and Colin Chapman, all taken in the pit garage and pitlane must be quite rare. Intimate they certainly are! Incidentally, Team Lotus mechanic Doug Garner helped me with identifying people in those pictures, including himself in about 4 of them. Imagine coming across photos of yourself that you haven't seen before after nearly 50 years!

And of course I must thank our own Richard Hinton (who actually put the germ of an idea of producing a book into my head way back in May) and Michael Hipperson too who I interrogated about the 'ins and outs' of producing a book myself. Brilliant stuff, all of you. You all do realise, don't you, that I may well call on your services again when I get stuck into Volume 2!

Oh, almost forgot, with the Limited Edition (£20 instead of £15, limited to 100 copies wordlwide) you get a DVD of some of the film from my archive, a film made by a friend of mine of the demo's of cars and drivers from just before the 67 British Grand Prix; Moss/Jenkinson, Fangio, Salvadori, Mays, Etancelin, Brooks, Hamilton etc are featured.

This covers the exact era when I fell in love with all things "car competition", so I have to order it to relive those so much more informal days. Thank you Gary and already looking forward to Vol 2 and more!

Lads, just to let you all know, this morning I suffered a hard drive failure to my main PC,  meaning I can't at the moment produce the dvd that goes with the Limited Edition of the book.  It looks like a complete re-install of Windows. So, I'm hoping to be up and running again by this time next week. I think I have contacted everyone whose order is outstanding (only about 4 people), all the others are in the post.  Just wanted to let you know if you order from this point onwards ther emay be a slight delay. I will endeavour to contact people who order anyway.  Thanks. I'm getting some good feedback from people who have received the book, I'm glad it's going down so well.

Received copy number 7 at the end of last week and it improved a dull weekend considerably.

As expected there are plenty of photos but the captions must also be applauded, being plentiful and informative.

Anyone who doesn't think that racing revolves around Ferrari and is interested in the less well known cars, drivers and teams will enjoy it.

There are loads of more expensive books that aren't as interesting as Shutter & Speed, it is great value for money.

It really proves despite plenty of naysayers if you are prepared to put the work in to create something appealing and indeed then do your own marketing website and dispatch- self publishing is a viable possibility for motor sport themed books. I do know  there are plenty out there  who would like to write a book.

I'm glad you enjoyed the book, Peter.

Indeed RTH, after initially chatting with you and then Michael Hipperson I started to properly think about producing a book. I have an archive of motorsport film, that was my starting point about 20-odd years ago and naturally enough still images have followed on. My archive is always available for books, newspapers, magazines and documentaries, but in reality I was lucky to have one image published per year. So, after talking with Richard and then Michael I decided to do it myself and get some of the the pictures out there for people to enjoy.

...just wanted to alert anyone who hasn't purchased the Limited Edition of the book but wants to, today I reached number 75....that's out of 100 copies worldwide, without any form of advertising, which has pleased me no end, so if you would like one then please order relatively quickly as I know it is going to be featured in 'Autosport' this week (I think) plus a few other publications before Christmas. All the best!

I can only echo Roger's comments. No. 26 arrived here in the chilly hinterlands of North Carolina this afternoon and kudos to Gary for what is an excellent job. Very well done!

As a matter of following up on what Richard suggests, there will be a panel at the 2019 3rd Drive History Conference on this very topic as it relates to automotive books in general, but certainly includes those on motor sport. I have to agree with Richard and the suggestion that this is still possible even today. What Gary has done is really quite something that is missing from the publishing field today: an interesting book on an interesting topic at a fair price that is a quality product.

Perhaps Gary should speak at one of Richard's meetings on this very important topic?

Just taken LE #30 /100 from the letterbox here in the suburbs of Melbourne. So Dale yours should be arriving Down Under soon too, if it hasn't already.

After a quick flick lots of Lotus and Escort, plus many other interesting cars. Nice touch to see the pages on Malayan & Kenyan motorsport.- aircooled Cooper and all.

Well done Gary.. Can I just suggest that if those of us Limited Edition copy holders decide to follow up with Volume 2 (can't see why not) then we have an option to get the same number again.

Stephen.

Thanks indeed for the compliments everyone, very gratifying indeed. I'm glad the book arrived OK in Melbourne, Stephen. Not a bad point about the numbering system for Volume 2, he says, thanking goodness that he's kept a record of which number was issued to whom....

In other news I have just had my first review published, courtesy of Keith over at Classic Porsche magazine;

....don't know if any of you would be interested, but this afternoon at around 3.30pm UK time, I will be on Brooklands Radio (nothing to do with the track!) talking about the book. RTH tells me there is an online listening capability here https://www.brooklan...11vDJnWJipxMseQ so even in Australia you can hear me!

Apparently I'll be on for about 15 minutes. All the best
