The thread title might be a bit ambitious. Perhaps EVs aren't a sure thing but if not it will be sad to see the demise of Daimler Benz. They are investing at least 30 billion Euro (20B in battery factories and 10B in vehicle development) to have 130 electric models in the showrooms by 2022 (that's 3 years away) and 15 - 25% of unit sales to be electric by 2025.

They are using the dreaded 'electrify' word. That means any mixture of FCVs, PHEVs, HEVs and BEVs. But yes, they are coming, by 2025 I'd expect to see that at least for commuter cars EVs will have some sort of price parity (not for equal range). Most of the major manufacturers have announced they'll be out of ICs for passenger cars by 2030-2040.There's some interesting stuff on cheap, inefficient, hydrogen generation, which would provide a great way of storing intermittent renewable energy, in which case FCVs might look more attractive - I don't actually  think so, more likely the FC will be by the hydrogen tanks and just be used to provide mains power. However FCVs certainly have the advantage in refuelling speed. One application for FC that makes sense is agriculture. You need something like 800 kWh for a day's ploughing.
