Hello.

Does anyone know what happened to the Auto Union, once owned by the Neil Corner?

And how many original Type D exist today?

Thank you.

These earlier threads may be of interest:

Crosthwaite and Gardiner Auto Union restoration...Where?

Here’s what Doug Nye posted some fifteen years ago in the Crosthwaite and Gardiner thread:

I don't understand some of the apparent confusion over these cars. Paul and Barbara Karassik have sold BOTH of the D-Type (sorry, Typ 1938 and Typ 1939) cars which were restored for them here in England by C&G after they had succeeding in brineging out a large collection of original bits 'from Russia'.

Their restored 1938-specification single-stage supercharged car is the one which eventually went to Audi, and it is the sister 1939-specification 2-stage supercharged car which has been kept in the UK though privately owned by a foreign collector and which is currently displayed on loan at the Donington Collection.

I repeat, I understand that this car's owner is presently offering this 2-stage car for sale. Introductions can be made...

Trust me, I'm a journalist...

--------------------------------------------------------------

The superb Crosthwaite & Gardiner company have restored:

The Neil Corner-owned ex-Kerry Payne ex-Zdenek Pohl V12 D-Type - sold by Neil and presently (allegedly) in storage in Germany for its overseas owner - together with their similarly ex-Neil Corner Mercedes-Benz W154 and Bugatti Type 59.

The two Karassik V12 D-Types, one 1938 car using some original parts - one 1939 car using many more original parts.

The Latvian V16-engined D-Type chassised 'hillclimb car' acquired by Audi in exchange for replica below.

The Deutsches Museum 16-cylinder C-Type

C&G have built:

One replica V16-engined D-Type chassised 'hillclimb car' for Latvia in exchange for original above.

One V16 C-Type for Audi - no slots around grille, water pipe through tank.

One V16 C-Type for Audi/VW Wolfsburg - car has slots around grille and outside water pipe - engine displayed separately, I believe.

One V16 C-Type 'stromlinienwagen' for Audi

One V16 A-Type for d'Iteren Freres, Belgium

One replica V12 D-Type for Audi Ingolstadt

DCN

So there are four wholly- or partly-original D-Types currently known about.

Peter Morley posted this about the ex-Neil Corner car in the Silver Arrows thread:

Lee Kun-hee of Samsung owned the Auto-Union for many years, supposedly problems with importing it into my Korea meant it stayed in a Frankfurt warehouse for many years with some of his other cars (Ferrari GTO etc).Apparently he sold the Auto Union for 5.5 million euros in 2007 - which is when he sold the GTO and Bugatti 35B etc.

With luck someone will have some more up-to-date info on these cars.

The ex-Neil Corner D-Type AU and his ex-Mercedes are today united in a private 200+ car collection in Germany.
I saw both cars in that collection in October last year.

This private individual also own the Fangio-250F from the Nürburgring `57.

Thanks for the answers. I have gone through quite alot of different threads about the Silver Arrows but not those, thanks!

Another rumour that I read on this forum, is that Bernie Ecclestone might own a Mercedes W25 Record car. Is that true?

Its not open to the public. But there are plans to build a museum.

Among the great museum cars are the Williams Bugatti from Monaco, 917 Porsche, 2 Porsche 550, 2 Porsche 904, a Le Mans winning Bentley, 300SL Alloy, Schumacher Ferrari F1, Hakkinen Mercedes F1, etc., etc.! The greatest stuff!

Actually, I'd be more interested in the rubbish ones, if there is the odd Bellasi or Osella or BMW Specials I might be tempted to break in...although the Williams Bugatti sounds a treat.

You find also there a BMW CSL race car, Ford Capri race car, Porsche 959 "Dakar", Alfa R. "Bimotore", and 3 further 8Cs, Delage GP, Talbot GP, Ferrari MM winning Ferrari, Ferrari "Spagetti" F1, Porsche 962, 2 Lancia Stratos Rally cars, Mercedes Group C, 2 Ferrari P-cars, etc., etc....

I was truly amazed...
