That's fun. Why is it so fat? 11" across the sump rails.

It's a BIG block 
It should be compared more to the Oldsmobile DRCE than a Chebby Rat.

As I draw the cross section of an engine the sump rails are wide enough to contain the crank webs. Is wider than that useful for something? I've never done engine blocks or heads as such.

Just a wild guess but the added material in the mains would spread torque force over a wider area reducing chance of failure at the rpm this engine is designed for..
