Not a fan. Can't we leave the JPS livery to rest in peace? Every man and his dog has had a chomp at it.

How about something new?

Boring, unspectacular, devoid of imagination, and difficult to look at.

I suspect it’s white so it’s actually visible.

If you remember the 2011 Lotus:

Lotus-renault-gp-r31-picture-2011-1.jpg

It began life very much a black and gold car but under certain light it was hard to see as it’s not particularly contrasting.

Fast forward we had a black and cream lotus:

f1-abu-dhabi-gp-2012-race-winner-kimi-ra

Rich energy must have insisted on chrome gold.

If they made the black matte, it could make the gold jump out more to prevent making it yellow later on.

I don't care much about the livery, but that rear wing looks insane.

I actually like the look of the car. It is definitely better than earlier HAAS livery

RE's colours are Black and Gold too, there are simply not enough colour combinations for every brand in the world to be unique, so that part is forgivable to me, these are their colours.

What is disappointing is that in this day and age with the opportunity to create imaginative liveries using creative software, all we ever see is a few words plonked on a flat background.

I get what you're saying about it being the colours of Rich Energy. Still meh for me though.

Although I will come clean and admit I'm not much of a fan of the black and gold of the original JPS livery either. The colours don't work for me.

But again, because their colours are also Black and Gold, "bringing back the JPS livery" is incidental, any livery would be "bringing back the JPS livery" by association and I think that is what the Beard means. Also its worth remembering that the JPS livery was not just one version, they were on the cars for over a decade, there were many interactions with more or less gold.

So the other drivers need to remember to look out for black and gold cars being driven like they've been stolen by Stevie Wonder then.

Well we all saw this livery coming a mile away so I can see why it’s not exactly setting the world on fire. It’s not exactly bold or different it’s just more of the same.

Well. Gene always said that he wouldn't sell anything(advertising) on the side of his car until he had something to sell.

I guess in his mind he now has something of value.

Time will tell with Rich. It looks and feels shady. I don't like the livery. Let the past be the past. Become your own image.

If the Rich money helps them maintain 5th place with a possibility to fight for 4th I'm behind them 100%.

Something just doesn't feel right though...….

Yes, I feel like people would be a lot more impressed if the sponsorship had not been announced in advance, and instead revealed with the livery.  But then we would have missed out on all the off-season fun in the Rich Energy thread...

So basically just a 2012-15 Lotus then.

Also, will Rasputin attend any races this year? Would be a sight.

On aircraft you usually put the flag the way it would fly. This makes it reverse on the right side, they could be going for the same here.
Here is Air Force One as an example.
130629161030-air-force-one-sam-26000-tou

And Haas has done it previously.
_103612075_haas_getty2.jpg

I loved that Haas implemented this reverse flag design, it is used in the military since the US civil war and when wear it as a patch by soldiers it represents going forward since that is how the flag would look if it was hold by someone running forwards with the stars next to the pole otherwise if it was set in the proper display it would mean cowardly running away from battle.

Same for planes and other military applications and I believe this looks good on an American car, not sure what it means though problably who Kmag or RoGro are going to crash into next 😝

For sure they could have been a little bit more creative, as much as i like it!

You can do more things with Black & Gold, other than a JPS rip off!

Look at Techeetah in Formula E, over the course of the years.

Haas with the best car of 2018, should see them potentially 3rd best team if Honda goes bang weekly.

If the white lettering was gold it would look a lot better. In my opinion the JPS livery was so good because it got the balance of black and gold right. The 2012-13 Fauxtus had too much gold. If this car was just black and gold it might be close to getting it right, but the white just spoils it.

I really don't get the fan level of that original black and gold lotus. Did people of the time fap or is this a nostalgia thing based on who drove them?

Do you picture Senna driving it or others? I think sennas yellow helmet made the value in the nostalgia people have.

The real original John Player Special was Lotus 1972... Senna drive a re-do 15 years later.

We have seen in other threads how some liveries are considered iconic, some of them were actually iconic, some were not.. The Haas now and the Lotus (which should never have been allowed to be called Lotus) are piggy backing on what was, it is not original and it will never become what they are trying to make it.

F1 in the old days were grainy TV, and printed articles in magazines, then and there any livery would stand out in a way they just do not do anymore, it is patently not the same scrolling across a computer scree, ipad or phone sompared to days gone by... and to the detriment of what is not compared to then (spoken as the old man I have become).

Colors and liveries which worked in the past do not work the way F1 is produced and consumed now.

Meh, I neither hate nor love the livery. Black is just a very boring colour. I hope Renault uses more yellow than black this year.

Lots of folks didn't notice that the 2018 Renault was yellow with black accents from top and front, but black with yellow accents from the side. It was brilliant that way.

Does anyone know if they’re still receiving Ferrari’s blue prints from the previous season or was it just the first couple?

At what point does posts like CL16's become libelous? In the UK? In the US? Asking for a friend.

quite like it actually....

Me, too... it's easy for folks to carp about these things. I'd like to see them put a livery on an actual team's car and suffer the slings and arrows of natterers on the internets.

From memory I think they did. In part this may have been because the Lotus 72  was in many ways revolutionary as a car, but I've long held the theory that when they changed from the old Gold Leaf colour scheme to the JPS black and gold the world media was still largely in black and white, and the bold/simple JPS livery looks cool in monochrome too.

Of course back in the early 70's car sponsorship (other than the odd motoring related sticker for your spark plugs or tyres) was still a relatively new concept so every livery colour combination was new and fresh. It's a lot harder to be original now.

There was lots of yellow, just depended on how you looked at the car. From the front: Entirely yellow, with some black accents. From the side, entirely black with some yellow accents. From the top, about half and half. An article on it: http://www.f1colours...llow-continues/

Takeaways from the livery reveal

  1. Gunther Steiner has decided to grow his hair out and it's not a good look, IMO.
  2. The livery is quite nice to my eye. I think the gold is darker than the old JPS or other previous golds.
  3. They couldn't afford to rent enough microphones or had someone show up unexpectedly, because they had 4, but needed 5
  4. Why was Gunther holding two mics when he came out only to hand one to a driver, Storey hand his off to the other driver, then they hand them back. Weird.
  5. The emcee was hilariously off base thinking a car reveal is done by pulling the cover from back to front when the main camera is at the front. Horrible, because the wadded up cover is then awkwardly in the way of the revealed car.
  6. It seemed strangely like something that needs never be done again. Nowadays, I think virtual reveals via tweet, instagram, and other media hits market goals as well at a much lower price point.

Now that's done. Let's go racing!
