True, Lee...

But I wasn't keen to waste too many words on such a worthless engine.

2 litre Fords go ok. Too Heavy however.

2 litre OHC Fords worthless and too heavy, eh.

Please open both eyes please.  Or is it more comfortable being one eyed!

2 litre OHC weight versus 1600 cross flow is somewhere between 14 and 27 kilos heavier depending who is weighing and with what anciliaries.  About the same percent increase as displacement.

220 measured HP at flywheel is documented for the OHC built by others for race purposes.

I have built an 148 RW HP OHC without going into the block at all. I can detail how I got there but about the only significant cost was in buying the camshaft. Virtually all other costs were altering bits and pieces with my own tools at hand.

Regards

I repeat. Heavy but go ok. And I feel those weights too are suss. Though a pushrod is not light either but I have owned Mk2 Escorts with both engines and the 2 litre is simply front heavy.

The one that went very well between explosions was the one with the twin cam head and a hairdryer. Sierra engine

Sorry to upset your sensibilities, Joe...

But I guess I am a bit one-eyed about these things. I have been brought up on a diet of Peugeot engineering.

Lee

A Sierra engined Mk2 Escort would have to be in a totally different class to the Ford OHC.  Probably the the second best Escort behind a BDA engined Mk1.

The twin cam engined Mk1s and 2s would have to rate above the OHC as well by a small margin in desirability stakes.  But I doubt that there is any significant weight difference between any of them.

I deliberately did not quote all up weights between the cross flow and OHC because it all but impossible to directly compare published info because nobody provides detail as to ancillaries installed while being weighed.  Best that I can tell is that the crank/rod assemblies are within 4 1/2 kilos of each other.  The OHC block is 2 inches or 10% longer than the c/f which would add in the range of 10 Kilos.  Throw in about a kilo for longer timing gear distances and a kilo for cam box and you are in the range of weight difference that I quote. Piston, flywheel, clutch, fuel and exhaust system weights have to be very close in weight to each other.

My OHC was in a Pinto that I built up for regular drives to the airport which was 2 hours away on freeway roads, as a tow car for my Formula Ford and for my three sons to hoon around in.  It was a supurb car for all three uses.  I also drove another's c/f Pinto that could never had been built up to do what I did in the OHC. It would cruise at 85 MPH and get 29 US g/mile, It towed at 65 to 70 MPH and it auto crossed/hooned/dragged with the best.

Regards

Joe, you are obviuosly one eyed about these engines. Again the 2 litre Ford OHC is a heavy engine. It makes the car front heavy. As I said in an Escort Mk2 you can feel it.

Yes they go ok but in comparison to many other makes not really. And are heavier. The head with cam alone is VERY heavy. And the block is a lot more robust, read heavy than most also.

At one time Cosworth US were doing them as a speedcar [midget] engine. But were heavier and less powerfull than the 2 litre twincam also being used. Which were for the time very quick. Though midgets all seem to be using alloy Sescos with pushrods. An engine that has made a lot of power for 40 odd years.

And were being turned a good deal less as well. Though the need for more rpm was probably not required as I suspect they made extra torque. And since they were a deal cheaper as well.

Could it have been that head/camshaft weight up high that made them seem heavier in the front of the car?

Quite possibly, they are quite a tall engine in comparison to others. Though I suspect an L series Nissan is as tall but ofcourse an alloy head helps there.

Here's a couple of minutes worth of 2019 PI Classic slideshow photos covering a variety of the cars at the meeting. Put together by a chap named Peter Knights

Also there's a few pages devoted to PI in the new Australian Muscle Car magazine (issue 108). Most relate to touring cars, but there's a photo of Mike Bennett's Lotus 12 and another with Alfie Costanzo.
