Hi Arjan, unfortunately not. Being launched at Race Retro.
Book has now been written and has literally just been submitted to the publisher so it's now on stage two.
I can try and have a life again for a short while...

Hi all,

Well, it’s starting to become reality. I thought you would all like to know that the book is now available to pre-order from the publisher. Please find the link below:

 https://www.performancepublishing.co.uk/richie-ginther-motor-racings-free-thinker.html

It is due for publication in mid-February 2020 but it makes sense to publicise and set it up now so you can spend your Christmas money on it!

To answer a few questions first now I know a bit more detail.

Will I be at the Goodwood MM?

Tentatively, yes. The publisher has a link up with some traders at Goodwood and we’ll try and tie this up nearer the time. I have committed to one day, either the Saturday or the Sunday. We’ll know how more likely this by late-February I’d imagine.

Size of the font?

It took a bit of persuasion, but yep, it’s the same size font as in Absolute Lotus magazine and most other publications they do.

I'd like to thank you for the interest in the book so far and apologise (only a little bit) to anyone who is in the same number of groups as I am in Facebook as I’m going on a publicity offensive imminently.

Richard

Richard, I know precisely how debuting one's own book feels and Congratulate you from the bottom of my heart!

I love the book already. The subtitle is great, as are the cover and the intro. Splendid, we'll order one in Spring when home a few days, read it immediately, and store it indefinitely.

You know, you debut authors here are ignoring that we live in a van without room for books, yet you keep announcing books anyway. How gauche, now we have to tow a library trailer and it's *all your fault*. ;-)

Well done Richard, I'm really happy for you!

Congratulations on your huge achievement, Richard. Having just seen the fruits of the last nine years of labour come together with my Lauda book, I can say with hand on heart there is nothing like the thrill of holding a copy of your own book in your hands. Based on some of our conversations, I am looking forward to reading some of the amazing anecdotes you have uncovered as well as seeing the many unpublished photos.

BTW - the cover is fabulous!

Good luck with the sales - I'm sure it will go well. See you at Race Retro!

While others live in houses with floors and rafters sagging beneath books and mags. When my copy of Richie Ginther: Motor Racing's Free Thinker arrives, I shall move out into a van.

I'm not sure quite what font size that is, but based on my experience with Stephen South: The way it was I woulkd advise all potential buyers to handle the book and check they can read it.

It's much larger font than the Stephen South book. There's a number of reasons why the SS book had to be the size it was but out of courtesy to Darren, I won't explain here. If it helps overcome your concerns, I'll see if I can send you a proof page next month.

Jack

It's still the plan to go to MM. I'll know more at Race Retro about that. I'd like to meet up as you've been such a key supporter for this for so long.

Timeline - not long to go. The book is now at the printers as of yesterday. Dispatched to me and the publisher on the 14th and dispatched to anyone who has pre-ordered and the reviewers on the 17th Feb.

But a lot of people will see it for the first time at RR.

The book is now a living breathing thing (as it were).

For those on Facebook, I've uploaded a video for a sneak peak. D-Type, not sure if you're on FB, but just for you, I've zoomed in a little bit (forgive my poor videoing skills) so that you can see the text but if not, I have no doubt you'll have no trouble reading it.

The link to the FB page is https://www.facebook...hiegintherbook/

The link to buy is https://www.performa...ee-thinker.html

The book will be dispatched over the next few days so any British-based buyers will get it on the 19th, not sure how quickly other countries will receive it.

There's a week of spending time with the family before it's all go go go from Race Retro onwards.

I can only hope that people enjoy it  :D

I went to the website to buy it and it asked if I had a discount coupon (but I bought it anyway).

(Just kidding ;) )

I was fortunate enough to purchase one today at Race Retro, with the added bonus of a chat with the author and a rather nice dedication. So far (perversely) I have started at the last few chapters covering Richie's life after retirement and have already learned quite a lot and have found it quite touching. A superb range of largely unseen photographs have been selected, and the book is all the better for that. I like Richard's writing style and it is very nicely produced (in the style of Darren Banks' Stephen South book from the same publisher). Good to catch up with you today, Richard and happy to recommended.it to TNFers

May I second everything Alan says? I also purchased the book yesterday and, although starting at the front (!) it is just stunning. Top effort from all concerned.

Thanks both, you are both very kind. All I'm waiting for now is someone to start in the middle   ;)  and let me know how that goes.

Although I've been humbled by some of the feedback, it's been a greater and absolute joy to meet and talk to people who have only been names to me prior to this weekend or people I've only come across once or twice fleetingly - both TNF'rs and non-TNF'rs. For Nigel Roebuck to actively seek me and the book out was a great thrill as I know he is a big Ginther fan.

I just hope everyone enjoys it. One more day of RR (probably a quietish one) and then I guess I wait for the magazine reviews thereafter...

Having spent a couple of hours over the weekend chatting with Richard and friends on the Performance Publishing stand and seen the level of interest that his book has engendered, I can only reiterate all the positive comments above. It's a great book and a super addition to my bookshelf - and any other enthusiast's come to mention it. If you're wavering on the lines of "I wasn't really a Ginther fan, so I'm not sure..." when you've read it, you will be. And apart from that, it's worth the cover price for the plethora of unseen photos from a bygone era.....

My copy arrived today in Wisconsin.  It is obvious that a lot of research went into the book, with the "Appendix: Race Results" being particularly monumental.  I am amazed by the number of pictures; many of them in color, with very few of them having appeared elsewhere.  The book is a very thorough biography with much background information that gets into Ginther's personality far beyond the usual sort of driver biography.   An extremely well-done book.

Great job!

Well, re. Richie's family. if I don't get any good reviews from those in the position to sway people accordingly, I have at least got the review I was kind of angling for when I started this - this from Richie's second wife; Cleo.

I'm not going to blow my own trumpet like this on this thread very often (if at all), but it was important for me that Rich's nearest and dearest were pleased. And so that's why I'm so relieved and happy Cleo put the below:

Now, I want you to know I am deeply grateful to you; you portrayed Rich as the multitalented, multifaceted, true and honest and funny, delightful, creature he was, my happiness and gratitude for this go beyond words.

That's enough for me if nothing else.

I'm also pleased to see the pictures from Jerry again. I did try and use the Dave Friedman one in the book but the price asked was not quite the price I was looking for....

As Richard already knows, I've now reviewed his book for speedreaders.info - and a cracking read it is too. It isn't yet on the homepage of SR but , if you are interested , just search 'Ginther' on the site. The results of the search alone will tell you how overdue this book is

Quoted from the RG, MRFT Facebook page:

Those who have bought the book will have noticed the many wonderful photos from Gunni Asshauer. Very sadly, Gunni died today, aged 79 after a period of ill health. I am pleased that he managed to receive a copy of the book in hospital and whilst he did not finish the book, he at least had the satisfaction of seeing his photos in print. Danke Gunni for helping make the book a visual treat.

I'd like to say two things. Firstly, please think of Richie's son, Bret, who as a doctor is on the frontline of the battle versus coronavirus in the US. Thinking of him and all the Ginther family during this worrying time.
Secondly, everyone, please stay at home if you can and stay safe.

On that note, I am now working from home but am still free for all Ginther related promotion - Skype, Whatsapp, Videos etc. I am doing an interview in about an hour with a US radio station and will send the link over when I have it.

John Aston, in his Speedreaders review, specifically mentions Gunther. His photos are wonderful and I'm pleased that they will at least be seen by a bigger audience. RIP Gunni

Cleo and Richie Ginther

As Richard has said above, Cleo saw the book and enjoyed it.

Brett's mother Jackie Ginther made a scrapbook of Richie's racing. A friend of mine Ron Kellogg bought it at a garage sale.

After he saw what it was he wanted to give it back to Brett Ginther. At the time Brett didn't want anything to do with the past.

Ron let me post some of the photos out of the scrapbook on the forum on an earlier site about Richie Ginther

Just read Richard's feature on Richie Ginther in Autosport online. Pretty good piece! Kind of an appetizer for the book that I ordered back in Februrary from Motors Mania bookshop and has been stuck there because of the pandemic. Seems that they are reopening next week so some hope it will reach me before the end of the month.

Hi, thank you! Basically the article is a snippet of each chapter of the book really, condensed into 3 page article. It was more difficult condensing it down then writing the whole thing!

Dependent on the situation with Motors Mania, you can still get the book direct via Performance Publishing - https://www.performa...ee-thinker.html. Hopefully it will get resolved in time for you though.

I was reading it at the same time as you. This is an historic edition of Autosport. It may turn out to be the very last. If not, then it's the last before a unique break. I shall keep my copy, complete with Richard's excellent article.

As a racing fan I followed what happened closely as I could, TV, newspapers and magazines being the sources of information. Yet slowly I got more and more interest in what had happened in racing history. First the early seventies, then the late sixties, and so on. I was saddened as a student to pick up an Autosport copy back in 89 and read the news on Richie Ginther. Somehow he had struck a cord, even though we never met, never could I have seen him race. Still he appeared to be special. In the years that followed it dawned to me how much Ginther had done not just as a racer, but also as a test driver for the various race teams, especially Ferrari. I was happy to see a book being made on him and ..... a tad late, I know.... I got it. And must say, what a great book it is. It is one of the most important biographies on Ferrari drivers I have and I will relish it for long time. A must for Ferrari and Racing aficionados.

Time for a Via Ginther in Maranello community.

Well done Richard!
