Charlie Whiting has died suddenly, his death reported to have been caused by a pulmonary embolism. FIA Formula One Race Director, Safety Delegate, Permanent Starter and Head of the F1 Technical Department since 1997, and before that (among many other roles) chief mechanic at Brabham during Nelson Piquet’s championship years. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Agreed. I get the impression that he rose above the politics of the sport and acted in a fair and honest way.

Indeed this is really sad news. 
Mr Whiting was also one of the driving forces to bring back Safety Car back in F1 during the years of 1992-1993.
And if I'm not sadly mistaken, Charlie also was almost if also not always that Safety Delegate accompanying Safety Car Driver or at least in backseat in the Safety Car during those years and when that vehicle became more known than before in Course Car years of F1.
He was also present on that very Black Sunday on Imola 1994 with Signor Angelelli.
Even though eventually in the years of 1994-1995 Charlie weren't had that much rides with Safety Car because he had other activities like becoming or prepared to become Official Starter.
I'm also quite sad because I was supposed to get some information from him for a few short days from now about (hopefully.) upcoming book of mine which is telling about the story of the Safety Car and the drivers behind the wheel.
Without Charlie and his comprehensive list of known drivers (Unless FIA or Circuit Offices themselves have also those lists in their archives.), this has been a major blowout for that project.
I don't know how to continue.
At least not right now that is.
