So far for FP1 I've had choppy, hesitant stream verging on unwatchable, cuts to commercial breaks where we see a blue screen while we're listening to the commentators. Anyone else seeing the same?

The US gets a redistributed Sky feed.  ESPN doesn't do anything to it, it goes to BamTech and is distributed there.  Those blue bumpers you see are so ads can be inserted.   There have been some Sky issues with the feed, for part of the beginning there was a star graphic when a feed wasn't available and at least one audio bit that had a late pickup.   The stream here is as solid as it was last year.

ESPN won't have ads this year. Mothers has 2 year contract.  Stream has been steady quality, but the feed just goes to blue screen at random. I doubt they will mess that up for the race.

Glad it's not only me. They've just cut to post session interview with Abiteboul and the stream is still choppy. Unbelievable.

The no ad deal is for the race only.  The other sessions last year had ads inserted.  If they weren't planning to run ads those bumpers wouldn't be inserted into the feed.

I didn't know that. How....unfortunate.

As I spend most of the season stateside...
I must say I love the Mothers sponsored coverage.
It’s a total piss take at all the folks in the UK who pay through the nose for what we get free, gratis and fer nothin’.

The situation for F1 coverage in the UK boggles the mind considering most of the F1 teams and manufacturing is based in the UK. I know that doesn't mean the teams are paying to put it on TV, but how do you mess that up?  F1 used to revolve around the UK, so much so that races where scheduled so the British viewers could watch the races right after lunch time on Sundays, screw everyone else.

Crazy how things have changed.

ESPN is not a free channel in the USA.  Its a paid for channel.

The UK is a relatively small market and Sky is willing to pay a premium to air.  It's more that those here (or perhaps many Brits in general) haven't adapted to the modern broadcast model.  I do still get a chuckle out of complaining about the whole "pay TV" thing when TV there has been pay TV but in the form of a tax.  You guys have been paying for it since the BBC.  It's just much more expensive on Sky.

The ads in the ESPN sessions are back.  The bumpers that were shown in FP1 had ads inserted in FP2 on both the stream and the broadcast.  Hopefully they'll maintain the ad free coverage during the race but for the other sessions looks like we're back to ad supported and requiring an ESPN subscription of some sort.  At least I hope they stagger the breaks in quali like NBC did so they happen between the sessions.

Don't you need a cable subscription for ESPN?

There will not be ads in the race. We've been assured of that.

You do but if he's on tour over here basic cable is ubiquitous in hotels, restaurants, bars, etc.  When you're touring in a motor coach sat TV is the norm.  He gets it by being on the bus.

That's what they keep saying but when you're dealing with "Thee House of the Mouse" I'm inclined to believe it when I see it.  Considering the blowback last time I've got pretty high confidence the race will run uninterrupted.   Remember when they said we'd get US centric content produced by Sky as part of the package?  I never saw it.  Because they didn't do it.  I've got more faith they carry on as last year with the Mother's broadcast.  In fact I bought some Mother's for the classic Mustang restoration I'm working on (though I would have bought it anyway, many of their products are best of class).
