Tropic Thunder time!

Topic? Racing in the Tropics

Seriously, this location is Mind Blowing: after a grey-ish e-Prix in the streets of Hong Kong, Formula E Circus approaches the incredible Sanya Bay, the Tropics of South China
Sanya is a green city: compared to the rest of the country it's a shining gem, with the lowest CO2 emissions & with big plans for electric mobility.

High temperatures (30 + degrees) , Sun & a few Tropical Thunders may affect the Formula E race day, in a brand new circuit with unique features.

Who's ready for the battle of the Tropics?

The Hong Kong controversy!

The Hong Kong e-Prix wasn't an easy ride for the Formula E drivers.

Heavy rain in the morning washed away every bit of grip on the chinese tarmac, leaving drivers to struggle in Practice & Quali: starting grid was super mixed up, with title favourites starting from the back & outsiders taking their chances from the front.

This, plus the super tight Hong Kong layout led to some crashes, pile-ups & controversies in perfect FE Fashion!

Andrè Lotterer VS Sam Bird, a great battle for the lead ended up with a collision: the englishman of Virgin Racing tangled with the back of the German's Techeetah, leading to a puncture.

p0733q4m.jpg

Bird eventually won the e-Prix, but he was penalized afterwards, allowing Edoardo Mortara to take the first win in Venturi's History.

Title favourites barely gained any vital point from Hong Kong, meaning that the championship battle is tighter than ever!

Sanya looks absolutely gorgeous, but I really want to see it look apocalyptic and suffer a tropical storm. I bet the Gen 2 cars and halo lights would look ridiculously awesome in heavy rain and spray conditions.

Though, that could end up in a day of red flags and eventual race cancellation, so I hope for a little bit of rain and a Wehrlein or Custard win.

I've found a digital fly through of the track on Eurosport's Spanish website:

Shakedown should be about 07:45am UK time on Friday morning, I think?

Schedules lists it as 15:30 local and they usually start the broadcast 15 minutes in.

MOST of it looks pretty good imho, apart for a few very tight turn entries.

Sector 1 looks like Riyadh's S1 with medium speed corners, than those super long straights.

An interesting mix!

As usual, I will pass full judgement until we've seen cars on track.

Looks like it could be decent enough though. Revising my comparison to a cross between Marrakesh and New York. Which could be both good and bad.

I do think there's a little bit of push-me-pull-you typical of motorsports (ok, well, society) when it comes to track design. One one hand we complain about acres of run off at proper racing circuits meaning there's no challenge to no end and yet when there's a track here that really punishes any abuse of track limits it's 'a joke' that can't be taken seriously. There's a mythical sweet spot that will likely never be found because everyone has difference preferences.

The track width looks to be around 10-12m in width all the way around. That's comparable to Montreal's Circuit Gills Villeneuve, where much of the back section is 9-10m and the start straight width is about 12m.

Liking the look of that track on the Eurosport site. Fast, wide and with a nice mix of slow and fast corners. Could potentially be one of the best tracks of the year but will reserve judgement until we see it for real.

Actually hope it isn't weather affected this weekend as would hate it if the action on a potentially good track was disrupted having just endured a messy HK e-prix.

The hairpin on the highway just over the bridge (turn 8) looks to be too tight. The hairpin at hong kong was a U around a dual carriageway and so is this hairpin.

Otherwise it looks like a very good track.

At least it's not Turn 1 this time, for this track that's Turn 10 which, somehow, reminds me of St Pete's transition form the airfield to the streets only with a 90 degree entry.

This looks a half decent track layout, assuming it is wide enough to allow some racing.  The hairpin is of course stupidly tight, but that seems to be a FE technical regulation for some reason.

I hope to see Bird absolutely dominate the race, and then see what FE come up with in order to disqualify him after the finish.  Looking at the Race Director in a funny way, maybe, or being deliberately British in a public place.

That's an important distinction, most of the bumper car stuff in HK was on the first lap or two before the field had spread out. Hopefully by the time they reach that hairpin they'll be in some kind of order.

Still, i'd rather they didn't have such tight hairpins but I suppose they're restricted by the local road layouts somewhat.

According to Sims this is likely to be an energy conservation track, which probably means Audi and Di Grassi have to be favourites.

The right hander after the long straight looks interesting. Like Mexico turn 1, potential for a day ending shunt there.

Good point actually for the current format. When I went to Berlin in S3 we saw the Mahindra pit-lane kerfuffle that cost them a win, so it used to be a positive. But all you’d see now is leaving pit-lane for each session? Maybe a repair, a penalty or two? It’s nice to have maybe but hardly crucial for the current racing.

I was going to say Sanya seems a nice location to make a trip to for the race next year, but when I looked into it apparently the transportation/public transport hasn't caught up to the increased tourism demand yet, so I can imagine it might be a bit hectic or frustrating during the FE weekend. If anyone is there this year or hears anything, let us know, because I fancy a Sanya trip!

***Roger Penske has publicly congratulated Formula E for its emergence as a major championship in recent years during a recent Motor Sport magazine podcast.

***“Jay was one of the early adopters and I am seeing him grow that and he is very enthused with that,” said Penske. “I’m glad to see we have one car now and they are not jumping from car to car which I think makes a big difference. I’m quite excited to see it and I congratulate on where the series is going.”

Formula E is Roger Penske approved!

That makes me a little emotional :')

He was at the Miami race in Season 1 and was positive then as well. Might be in part because Jay has a team but I do feel he's genuine. Smart man..

I am awake and ready for Shakedown

Edit: Track time over now, some thoughts

- Turn 8, the hairpin, seems more open and with more run off than the digital track previews seemed to suggest.

- Turn 10 is indeed a bit like Turn 1 at Mexico but with walls.

- On the whole, pretty good. Wide, flowy, with some good overtaking opportunity. One or two pinch points that wouldn't be too hard to iron out on a return visit.

Impressed by this track!!

First Sector is technical but flowing, reminding me of Santiago's Sector 1. (Wich was great)

Than you have the long straights, wich will launch those cars at 230 + km/h & will allow overtaking at the hairpin (wich isn't super tight).

T10 looks way faster than expected, similar to Mexico's Turn 1.
May cause drama!

Can't wait for tonight

Layout looks good. Backdrop is a bit disappointing considering the pictures upthread, but it's hardly going to be downtown given the disruption it would cause.

The race is at a perfect UK time for me, looking forward to my morning coffFEe

Track looks good but why do FE insist on having those kerbs that stick out into the track on the exit of corners? By narrowing the track it just increases the chance of accidents/track blockages and decreases the chance of overtaking IMO.

Got work tomorrow so can't stay up all night but will get up at 3am so i can watch FP1, FP2 and qualy before the race :)

Don’t really know, we first saw them at Tempelhof in Season 1 as a way to place down a solid kerb without causing any particular damage to the (in that case historic) surface and that quality seems to have allowed them to creep into most if not all of the venues. Maybe there’s also a cost saving element and/or in that it’s an FIA approved kerb unit it somehow streamlines paperwork?

***The long-range weather forecast for the Haitang Bay area on the island of Hainan currently suggests some potential storm activity with a 30 percent chance of heavy showers on race day. In addition, localized winds could see a treacherous track surface due to the close proximity of beaches to the track.

***“Depending on the weather, we could see grip suffer due to sand blowing onto the track from the beach,” said Michelin’s Serge Grisin. “The forecasters are talking about 30°C (86°F) and heavy rain, but that doesn’t worry us unduly after the storms that marked Free Practice and qualifying in Hong Kong.”

If the weather stays as predicted, could be bad for Mahindra unless the Hong Kong issue was a one off. Sand and rain, hope we get some snow and volcanic ash too.

I actually quite like the idea of some racing being more energy saving than others. That way the fast guys win some days, the efficient guys win on others, and the best all round stay up the top of the championships.

Looks to be, di Grassi said he thought the racing would be good on the track walk
