Some terrible photos here, taken with a tuppenny camera, back when I started watching races at Brands Hatch. I think they are mostly 1968.

Maybe you will have some fun trying to identify them. Some are obvious but I do not have all the answers. I would be happy if anyone can enlighten/remind me!

Some are 1970. Jackie Stewart's March 701 for instance which is from the GP.

The F1 photos are 1970 vintage, as Bruce McLaren is included it must be Race of Champions. 917 and 512 from 1970 1000km. Chevron B16 probably also 1970.

The DBR4 no. 1 is Neil Corner, I think.

#3 is Jo Bonnier spinning the Lola T70 Mk3B he shared with Reine Wisell at South Bank (now Surtees) during the 1970 1,000 Km. Wisell had a spin at Druids earlier on. The car survived to finish 7th. Also #18.

#24 Frank Gardner, Boss Mustang, Race of Champions March 1970.

#12 The Siffert/ Redman JW 917 at the 1970 BOAC 1000km. My hopeless sponge of an anorak still hasn't dried out......

#14...and this is the Amon/Merzario Ferrari 512.

#4 Looks like Brian Muir's Wiggins Teape Camaro ahead of the Mustangs of Gardner and Dennis Leech. Maybe Mike Crabtree next up in the Escort?

Probably the 1970 August Bank Holiday RAC Saloons.

2. Looks like the Broadspeed pair of Escort GTs — Craft and Fitzpatrick?
4. Brian Muir at the front? Wiggins Teape Camaro (Malcolm Gartland car?)
17. Mike Crabtree, Escort TC
19. I think that’s the John Miles works F3 (Lotus 41X?? - the car that was displayed at the recent RaceRetro)
25. Dave Brodie edging away from the middle of the front row. (Could that br the Bill Shaw Rover V8 on the second row - the car that Roy Pierpoint sometimes drove?).

#15, 16 and 21 are from the 31/8/1970 meeting F3/Saloons and, here, the RAC sports car round. 135 is winner Chris Craft in the Evergreen Lola T210, Is 136 Jo Bonnier perhaps? And is 130 an Astra? The only car I remember clearly from this race is Ed Swart's beautiful Radio Veronica Abarth.

Thinking about it, the Chevron B16 in your first shot might be from this race too.

Agreed. Could be from the E R Hall Trophy on 20th October 1968 where Miles was #40. He retired with a puncture after 3 laps of the final, having finished 5th in his heat.

I don’t think so - I reckon it’s Reine Wisell. Having dug out the Autosport report I’m pretty sure we’ve got the right event, as there’s a photo of Bill Wilks in Lotus 16 #10 dicing with Neil Corner in Aston Martin DBR4/250 #1 in the historics race.

I think the F3 photo is from the early stages of the 1st F3 heat when Wisell was pressing Miles hard for the lead, which he took and went on to win the heat.

Timo Mäkinen for the powerboater in #20? I believe he won that particular race.

I think this is again from the 20th October 1968 meeting, this time in the Guards Motor Show 200 Trophy. There’s a photo in Autosport of Craft in #25 with Fitzpatrick right up his chuff. I can’t make out the number on Fitz’s car, but it would seem to tie in with the other photos from that meeting.

#13 is the 20th October 1968 meeting again, I believe. John Morrison, then aged 19, was having his third F3 race in Tecno #78. In the second heat he took to the grass at Westfield trying to avoid Charles Carling’s spinning Brabham and overturned back onto the track flattening the roll bar. The race was stopped, but Morrison escaped with cuts, bruises and shock.

As you say, 135 is Craft who won. 130 is Guy Edwards in the Philips Autoradio Astra RNR2 who finished 3rd. I’m pretty certain you’re right about Bonnier (4th). The Chevron B16 is probably John Burton (2nd), but might be Brian Robinson (5th) or Ian Skailes (unclassified).

No 16 looks like an Astra RNR1, raced at Brands in 68 and 69

Not quite spot on, John, but damn close. Here’s how Quentin Spurring described the start of Heat 1 in Autosport:

The Camaros of Muir and Pierpoint both lurched away ahead of Gardner, while Crabtree sneaked past Craft and Lamminen to lead them out of Paddock. Muir pulled out a small lead immediately ...

Interesting that Hannu Mikkola was in the race, driving a British Vita Escort with ‘natty adjustable suspension designed by Jeff Goodliff’. He retired with fluctuating fuel pressure after a good drive.

#26 is definitely Roger Williamson. If #25 and #26 are at the same meeting, I think the most likely candidate is the 2nd August 1970
meeting where the main race was for F3. Williamson won the small-capacity special saloon race and in the larger-capacity race Dave Brodie ‘had a flag-to-flag win fairly comfortably ahead of the battling trio of Roy Pierpoint (Rover V8), John Bloomfield, giving his David Wood BDA-engined Escort its second outing, and Colin Hawker (Escort V6).’ Pierpoint started from the second row.

Proper racing on a proper circuit.

I'm sure I marshaled at some of these events.

Special salons coming down Paddock, you knew you're in for some entertainment.

Certainly remember BOAC 1000s. Who can ever forget Porsche 917's?

The Yardley BRM was in my eyes the best paint job of that era.

2F-001,well spotted, photo #25, just had confirmation from Dave Brodie that that is him in the middle of the front row, and that he went on to win the race! Thank you DogEarred for posting.

I'm just so envious...

I think this means that DogEarred was present for Pedro's great drive in the 917. How was it described? As somehow the race had been made to enable him to show his skill, something like that.

In 1970, spectator facilities didn't seem high on the Brands Hatch circuit owners' list of priorities. At the Grand Prix in July, by when most of us had at least dried out from the 1000km, camping was popular. Fans had arrived from far and wide, including the USA, to support Gurney, Andretti and, possibly, Pete Lovely. Facilities for the hundreds of campers consisted of a field. And one very, very slow tap. No toilets, they were all in the circuit which, after about 7.00pm, was locked. So people pissed and crapped in the hedges. But we were happy.

Great pics brought back some fond memories! Seeing Pic 13 perhaps we should see if there's any pics out there of cars being towed back to the pits!

I lay down on the path up to Druids, unintentionally of course, and spent the day a mid-brown colour, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. You could see Pedro was quickest.
