A G Goodchild, London photographer

I'm hoping the TNF collective might be able to throw some light on A G Goodchild, active late 50s (and possibly much earlier and later)

My search on TNF gave me precious little, but then Tim might pluck something from within that I failed to dig up.

The best I could find with google help was an A Goodchild on the Imperial War Museum site

An interesting booklet by Bill Hartley, illustrated by many

good Goodchild photographs, tells of the recent 10,000 mile non-

stop run at Goodwood by an o.h.v. Morris Minor saloon. It is

The IWM reference seems to point to an Arthur George Goodchild (RAF service number 145282) who gets several mentions in the London Gazette. Appears to have been in the admin branch so might not have been all that young in the 1940s.

Ancestry throws up a few Arthur George Goodchilds; the favourite looks to have been one born in Merton in Surrey in 1906, married in Wimbledon 1929, living in Collier's Wood late 1930s, but whose fate I can't trace (possibly died mid-late 1950s? - his wife (and son?) are on the 1959 electoral roll).

That may correspond to the one who died in 1942 aged 35, Mid Surrey district.

Perhaps the Wokingham 1900/Devizes 1975 one then?

No, doesn't have to be Arthur. Although Arthur (1900-75) would appear to have a good chance of being the RAF photographer listed as A Goodchild by the IWM. Probably just a coincidence of initials then.

The name A.G. Goodchild is turning up in connection with Hardy Amies, couturier:

Googling finds his rank as Pilot Officer (or Flying Officer)

The London Gazette 27 Oct 1942 has

Alfred George Goodchild as "to be Plt Off in Class CC" (General Duties Branch) from 30 Sept 1942.

Absolutely, not unadjacent to the Adelphi Theatre on the Strand,  where Charlie Girl had had its long run in the 60s.

AG Goodchild, Photographer, of Adelphi Buildings, John Adam St WC2, first appears in the London phone book in 1951. Phone number is actually TRAfalgar 4040. Last phone book entry is 1967.

In regards Rupert raising the question of are they Goodchild photos, I can't answer that. Even some communication with (what is now) British Motor Museum (Gaydon) Archivist, Gillian Bardsley about 3 years ago in regards period Nuffield/Austin/BMC photographers came the basic response that they were rarely credited for their work. Plus, the point that I was trying to find out they couldn't give an exact date when a specific and quite famous set of press photos were taken. Those being the Cooper team at Goodwood testing the Indy Dunlop wheels on a T53 or T55 with the prototype 997 Cooper..

The Meccano magazine non-stop Morris Minor feature, Rupert has linked in post 13 certainly show the great effort that Nuffield would go to keep things mobile for the duration of that test. The Health and Safety people of today would have a fit!

Richards detail searches of the London phone book certainly helps with joining a few dots.
