The only reason I'm starting this thread is because it was clogging up the Silly Season Thread (even though there has been no news or quotes from Alonso or any of the F1 teams).

See the latest discussion right here.

I don't think Alonso will come back to F1 but I would like to see it happen. I think it's unrealistic to see him back in F1 but will be happily surprised if he does.

What will be interesting is IF you don't think Alonso is coming back to F1, what on earth will he be competing in next year?

Insert Honda comments, Alonso comments, Alonso personality and engine comments and of course the 'its another Alonso thread' comment - the usual repetitive stuff.   ;)

(and try to discuss nicely)  :D

I see him only returning if Red Bull or Mercedes suddenly lose Lewis or Max and cant find a equal replacement.

Which is however you much dont like him or how unlikely you find it a legitimate reason for him to be part of the Silly Season.

I think he'll do Dakar and Indy 500 at least.

I would like to see him at RB alongside Max. The chance of that happening is between nill and zero.

1. Yes

2. No

3. Indy500 because there was no "don't know" option.

Red Bull - apparently not
Mercedes - probably not
Ferrari - very much doubt it
McLaren - surely not
Renault - perhaps but not in their current state

Alfa Romeo - hell no

Haas - hell no

Racing Point - hell no

Toro Rosso - hell no

Williams - hell no

Unless he buys or starts a team within the next few months and decides to drive himself for said team the answer is NO

If he truly wants the triple crown he should get a fulltime ride in Indycar. Get a good feeling of the car, have multiple races in with the car and the field and be fully prepared.

Would love him to return, only in a top car though.

Given there is almost zero chance - would be great to see him compete in IndyCar for a full season.

No chance. His era is drawing to a close and the teams are unlikely to want to gamble on him now when they can go with someone who is younger, cheaper and will be around for a while.

The only way I can see him back in F1 is if there is a sudden departure from a big team (e.g. Vettel or Hamilton retiring without notice or a Felipe Massa-style accident, which I really hope doesn't happen) and whichever team is affected needs to find an experienced driver as a very quick replacement.

I think he should do a full Indycar season and go for the triple crown properly at the Brickyard before returning to WEC for the new regs.

That's for sure and what else he is planning

F1 is out. Maybe IndyCar full season but he said that he is not interested in doing that, only Indy 500. Nascar?

No return to F1, Dakar, Indy 500, Daytona and karting.

Return to F1 still possible if something extraordinarie happens.

I don't see Alonso ever racing in F1 again. I think he's still probably one of the very best drivers in the world, but he's kind of burned bridges at any team worthy of his talents. He's known to be a bit of a stirrer, and his shelf life is limited. He'll be 40 in a couple of years and while possibly still competitive he's not got a long F1 driving career ahead of him. Why would a team invest in him short term?

As for next year, either rallying or an assault on the Indy 500 if he can get a competitive ride. Even that seems to be a big "if" now....the 500 may have passed him by too.

Sadly no, I don't think he'll be back in F1, would I like to see him back? Hell yes, I'd love to see him in a competitive car, better still replacing Bottas or Gasly but sadly it won't happen.

I'd love to see him doing a full indycar season next year, I'm really enjoying the indy races this year and Alonso in there would be the cherry on top of the cake! (although tbh anything would be better than Formula E)

I cannot see his return to F1, unlike some posters I have no idea how his presence impacts a team's dynamics, it just seems he is getting too old when considering the young(er?) talent available. I can see him competing in the Indy 500 if he could acquire a competitive ride.

What was actually clogging up the silly season thread was people constantly going on and on about Alonso talk being off-topic there, and people then reacting to that. The actual posts by people just talking about possibilities of Alonso going to this or that team are a mere fraction compared to the number of posts complaining about it.

'People like me'  - I think I posted there once or twice and one of those was to say that we should have a separate thread because not all of it was silly season related.

Admittedly you didn't complain about it much, but you did complain and ask for someone else to start this thread iirc. If my memory is bad, then my apologies! :) The point is that the bulk of the Alonso posts have been made by people complaining about too many Alonso posts, and people responding to them.

The problem is iirc there have been threads like this before, but they were shut down by the mods because people complained that there were too many Alonso threads lol. Then if anyone mentions Alonso in the silly season thread, they get shouted down by numerous posters, creating a ton of Alonso posts. Then those same people complain about too many Alonso posts ad nauseum, adding further to the problem.  :drunk:

It's nuts.

The mainstream media constantly pushes the narrative that Alonso is a liability for the teams, and is an awful driver to work with. No wonder you're gonna have a lot of people complaining about him returning to F1.

When Barrichello interviewed him in a podcast from a brazilian youtube channel, Alonso was shown in a much better light.

Anyway, I'd rather have a 40 year old Alonso in my team than any of the current crop of drivers at F2 or from outside F1 in general.

You can never have too many Alonso threads! ;)

Seriously though, this thread should be fine because he either gets discussed here or in the Silly season thread and IMO I'd much rather have a separate thread on Alonso (he's still a big driver and is obviously a huge talking point so why not have a thread on what he's going to do next year rather than the same discussion about Honda, his relationship with teams etc. in a thread that is meant to be about 2020).

And in the OP I did ask to 'discuss nicely' and so far nobody has complained (I think).

My primary wish is him doing a full Indycar season - - but whatever series he ends up in, I hope it allows us see him race a lot more than we have been able to this year. After the epic Daytona 24, the entire year has been a wet fart of seeing Fred racing a Toyota in a two car field maybe once a month if we are lucky. That is a gigantic waste of his skills.

I don't think so unless something extraordinary happens. I'd like it very much. And though it may always have been like that, and though Alonso may have played a part in it, I still think it's sad for the sport that seats at the best two teams are wasted on Gasly and Bottas while an Alonso stands by

I think he will return some time in some fashion, even if it's just as a cameo replacement drive for someone, he seems bored by his tour of varied world motorsports and missing F1.

Pedro de la Rosa came back older so I don't see why shouldn't a much better Spanish driver come back too.

As for next year I have absolutely no idea what the hell is he doing. I voted Formula E almost randomly. I think he's frustrated with the Indy 500 chase and uninterested in a full season of Indycar, has already ticked the Le Mans/WEC box, sees Dakar/rallying as a bit too much to learn for him, the F1 return right now seems closed on every team (but I still think it will happen, only later), so Formula E is almost the only thing that's left.

Alonso would only return to a winning team if its championship capable, thats is only Merc I'm afraid, so he would only return to F1 to replace Bottas and thats very very unlikely

Isn't that Alonso in a nutshell? Gets easily frustrated, makes knee-jerk decisions, which haunt him in the long-term? Sounds almost logical that once again his career is in a bit of a mess, even after F1!

Thet Triple Crown of Endurance:  he needs the Sebring 12 hours ..... ????

And I can't recall any driver who ever won any of the three events in that Crown as well as a 24 hours of Spa. If my memory is correct, thre might be a few drivers who won Spa outright and had Le Mans GT or Touring Car (early 70s) class victories. Toine Hezemans is one of them I believe.

Yeah this is true, it seems like he had a grand plan for post-F1 glory and it's already a bit of a shambles after 1 year, and that's so typical of him.

"shambles" in terms of there seemingly being no direction, not in terms of how well he executed this plan... He did win Le Mans and looked crazy good in his first Indy 500 attempt.

What ego?

I mean Lewis lied to stewards, accused his team of sabotage, tweeted his team-mates telemetry coz he got beat by him. Vetttel called lawyers on his team, swore at a very respected race director when millions of people were watching, drove his car into a fellow driver but hey Alonso's ego.

He spent 5 years driving progressively worse Ferrari's then 4 years with back of the field Mclarens, hardly someone who gets frustrated easily. In reality he probably showed more patience for a driver of his caliber in history.

Too old? Prost came back into F1 after a 1 year sabbatical and won the WDC at 38. Michael came back at 42.  Mansell won his title at 39.

I don't know what you mean JP. The great man almost qualified for Indy this year in what let's remember is as close to a spec series as makes no difference. Let's not forget he also won Le Mans which was effectively a two car race owing to the other car suffering a puncture. He has had an amazing season and once again shown himself to still be at the top of his game. Nothing left to prove.
