Good compilation. I only sorta like the designs of Bourdais, Andretti, VK and Daly. Props to Rahal, TK, Kimball, DJWP, RHR, Ericsson, Sato, Herta and Dixon for having helmet designs that I could recognize in a crowd even though I am not really a fan of them as designs. Chilton and Pagenaud spoil it with the rotating colours and I don't see or remember Rosenqvist's lid properly enough to judge. The rest of 'em are largely abominations. Askew' s helmet kind of sums up everything that is wrong with the modern swooshy, busy yet utterly forgettable helmet design.

Newgarden is a fantastic one. It's messy but it has all similar shapes. That makes it messy but aesthetically pleasing to me.

I think Askew's is comfortably the worst.  What the **** actually IS it?

Askew and Palou's are bad but Ferrucci's is an abomination.

Ferucci's horrendous to reflect some of his on track behavior no doubt

Bourdais and Sato classy and iconic

It is truly sensational. The usual generic, flicky design with almost no colour added.

I really don't get it. In the past, drivers could be recognized by their helmets and each driver had their personal design which they used for their entire career.

That turned into a corporate exercise where sponsorship dominates and drivers use helmet designs dictated by their sponsors (especially Red Bull-sponsored drivers).

Then the FIA decided to allow drivers their own numbers to make them more recognizable and the teams immediately make their numbers unrecognizable.

It's like they are taking the piss on purpose.

It's the reverse of what has happened in the US.  For years drivers did not have personal designs.  They mostly matched the car colour scheme, so were sponsor-dependent.  Andretti's iconic design was a by-product of a sponsorship deal with Viceroy Cigarettes, who had what might be termed a reverse Marlboro logo. Add that to his traditional silver helmet and you have something so distinctive he kept it for his career.

Hence if you try to think of a Rick Mears or Al Unser (sr or jr) design you're going to think of a sponsor creation.  It perhaps says a lot that Johnny Rutherford is so well known as Lone Star JR as he did have his own design (albeit basically just the single-starred Texan flag on top).

Even Red Bull must have seen this and thought: "Come on guys! Even we let them have a slight hint of their own design!"

Here's to yet another season of David Croft correcting us, that we should watch the t-cam color instead of the helmets...

I quite like Ocon’s design for this year. Still a bit too swooshy, but the gold is incorporated nicely, and I’m still a big fan of the Eiffel Tower on the top. Only having two main colours keeps it nice and distinctive, especially if Ricciardo lives up to the hype. Pictures can be found here: https://twitter.com/...5634340865?s=21

Kevin Magnussen's lid this season. Matches the Haas colors as well as the colors of the danish flag, still has his signature K on it. Looks nice, I think.

Good change, white top was a bit boring. Visor strip also changed to black. Wonder if that might end up being purple too.

If I were Hamilton, I'd respond to Ricciardo's tweet with

"Ah, so your helmet is a tribute to someone famous who died recently? Really cute Daniel. Really. Original too..."

Recently died? Kpbe died a few weeks ago, MJ has been dead since 2009, Hamilton had this helmet in 2013...

I think RIC missed the mark with his comments, a Kobe Bryant tribute was as unoriginal as it can be right now. I know it's a helmet for testing, but still...

Well, Ricciardo didn't make a fuss about it. You did. In a horrible and totally not funny kind of way. As if tribute helmets weren't used before.

Not going to drag this any further because it got way more exposure it should have, but when I referred to the tribute thing, I wasn't slamming the initiative itself, but the way Ricciardo had bragged about how his helmet was going to be something completely different and original from the rest of the pack:

I love everyone releasing their new helmet for this year. Really cute guys. Really. Original too.. Don’t worry, I’ll save the day.

In your own words – and examples – tribute helmets aren't exactly breaking new ground, which is why I brought up Hamilton's MJ lid (I tried to pick one that wasn't F1-related to provide a more accurate comparison to DR's Bryant tribute). And in Ricciardo's own words, he was in a way "making a fuss about it".

But enough about this subject. If I offended anyone by it, it was clearly not my intention, so please accept my apology if you thought my post was inadequate.

Yup. Few today are even decent.
