Decal detail

Sometimes we do have photos where sponsor decals can't be surely identified. A problem mostly modelers have...or people building a replica of a competition car.

Let me start with this one:Jean-Louis Clarr at the Tour de Corse 1982.

Somebody I know is looking for information about the 2 round blue/white decals in the top corners of the starting number field. I'm pretty sure those are either from the event sponsor or from the organizing club.

The sponsors that year were the Automobile Club de France, S.E.I.T.A, the French tobacco conglomerate, Casanis, a liquor maker, and Esso. The organiser, as usually, the Association Sportive de l'Automobile Club de Corse et du Tour de Corse Automobile. That's all I can help, as the images are not clear. With some degree of imagination one can think about the symbols of the two auto clubs...

Looking around with your hints I didn't get much further. I found a photo of Jean Ragnotti's car and when I zoom in as far as possible the white decal looks like the old FIA logo. The FIA had a different, round logo before 1989. The blue one reads like FTA or maybe FISA?

So, two letters at the bottom while in the pictures by Funformula it looks more like there is a single letter at the bottom - talking about the right logo. 

You´re right.. but the "F" and "S" have changed position too, so maybe FFSA changed their logo between 1971 and 1982 slightly?

Logo on top left is most likely for the organising club, Automobile Club Corse. There seem to be many variations of logos used.

Somewhere there must be a really good photo of one of the original doorplates. But I give up, for now...

Myhinpaa, as you can see on the McKlein photo it is surely not the logo of the Automobil Club Corse. I stick to the old FIA logo.

Modelcars are for me not a reliable source because decals are often wrong in such small details unless they came out in period. Somebody gets it wrong once and everybody copies the mistake afterwards.

Thank you all for your input. I did pass the information on and I hope we will get to see the finished car at some vintage event next year.

Strange how difficult clear photos of just the door plates from '82 was to come by....

Anyway, after a quite exhaustive search I am almost 100% sure the left logo is in fact the FIA one, while other years it's the AAC. (in many variations.)

That's pretty much as conclusive we can get, while for any other year there is a wide variety of really clear close up photos...

As Duc-Man points out regarding decals on models, there are many who are lacking in detail or even plain wrong.

Obviously many give up in their research or jump to conclusions.... And a few is amazingly accurate and can be used for full scale recreations.

Edited to add: I just got some feedback from the guy I was asking for, he got in touch with McKlein and got a detail photo of a door plate and one from the hood plaque. It is the FIA logo on the left and the FFSA logo on the right on the doors and Esso of both sides of the number on the plaque.

Duc, I haven't found a clear photo yet but other cars, the two Joest Porsches for example (#7 & #8) have the same sticker. Is it a BA 1000km sticker?  I can certainly see '1000'. Is it from the previous championship event perhaps?

I think I've found the design, if not the sticker. If you can find a programme for the race, inside the cover, on the contents page, is the BA laurel wreath design, sports car, 1000km etc..
