Season might be over, but the teams are staying in Abu Dhabi for the post-season test.

Tuesday and Wednesday with the following drivers:

Mercedes: Valtteri Bottas, George Russell
Ferrari: Sebastian Vettel, Charles Leclerc
Red Bull: Max Verstappen, Alexander Albon
Renault: Esteban Ocon, Esteban Ocon
Haas: Romain Grosjean, Pietro Fittipaldi
McLaren: Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz
Racing Point: Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll
Alfa Romeo: Kimi Raikkonen, Antonio Giovinazzi
Toro Rosso: Sean Geleal/Daniil Kvyat, Pierre Gasly
Williams: George Russell/Roy Nissany, Roy Nissany/Nicholas Latifi

updates will be provided through the various liveblogs on the websites of the major publications.

And as tradition, this forum will look only at the leaderboard and start claiming who's 'better' based on non-relevant data.  :smoking:

It's the last in-season test, as teams can not run updates or try out things on their cars, which have to be the same as they raced them in Abu Dhabi.

They'll only test tyres, not cars.

Aren't Roy Nissany and Sean Gelael enough for you?

Thought it would be good to keep the 2019 compound because at one point in the season things were beginning to look more competitive. However, after the last race, I think a tyre change is a better hope for no Mercedes domination again in 2020. It could go either way, but at this point of desperation, random is better...

We have Sergio Perez and Sebastian Vettel in the 100 club as well now, joining the three others. Also,
@RoyNissany has ventured out on track for his first laps in a #F1 car.

To the surprise of no one lol

it just finished, so we'll soon probably get something I reckon, if Pirelli allows it

Conditions, or shittier tyres?

How about the engines? They need to run the same PU that they used on the race, they can run a new one that has the same spec as the one used on the race, or they can run a new spec?

They have a mix of 19/20 tyres but this also tells us what tyres they set the fastest time on

It doesn’t look like the 20 tyres are anything special by the looks of this though lol

Here's McLaren's test report:
https://www.mclaren....abi-test-day-1/

“It’s a Pirelli test so obviously we’ve been trying out lots of tyres today, 2019 and 2020 compounds, and conducting back-to-back comparisons. Short performance runs but also long runs without changing anything on the car so that tyres can be compared.

I dunno if this'll be typical but looks like we won't be getting any comments from the drivers on the 2020 compounds.

Max Verstappen couldn't get rid of them soon enough in Austin he told a journalist. I doubt it changed much here.

Which tells enough.

Since they're aloud to be positive, we'll hear it when they're positive. When it's silence...

A 2020 C5 nearly a second slower than a '19 C4 doesn't bode well

Before we get too worried about the raw pace, can someone remind me of the intent of the changes was for the new tires?  Am I right that the goal is a wider working range?  I hope that would mean we don't have teams that are unable to "switch the tires on" some weekends or even all year, and we don't have certain compounds that no one can use properly all weekend because they had to tailor the setup so much to make a different compound switch on properly.  I would rather have the slower tires if we can fix these kind of things

apparently only Grosjean talked to the press, and he was not impressed

However, as the sole 2019 regular speaking to media after the opening day of running, GPDA director Grosjean indicated that his opinion “stayed in the same line” as after Austin.

Asked which spec he would prefer to race next year, he said: “I don’t know. It’s too early to say. But it shouldn’t really be a question, should it?

“That’s where we are. If you ask me right now, I don’t know. Depending on the track I would tell you one or the other. [But] this is not going to happen.

“After one year of development, you would like to be saying ‘I am going to race the 2020, no question’.”

[...]

Grosjean said that his team ran many comparisons between 2019 and 2020 versions of various compounds on Tuesday, adding that “some were close, some were far”.

“They [the 2020 tyres] are different,” Grosjean said. “There are some positives and there are some negatives.

“They did a big change. Again, we need to look at how we’ve been running the cars and make sure we are on the maximum of everything, but if you ask me if I’m very happy about the new tyres, and [if] this is going to solve some of the problems – the thermal degradation, sensitive to following another car – I just have to tell the truth. And no, it’s not going to change that problem fully.

“The degradation on some compounds was better. Being able to run lower pressures also helps you. So those are the positives. But it’s not what you would dream of.”

As long as they are not based on the tyres that worked better for Mercedes than others, anything is an evolution.

as long as Mercedes keep doing a great job understanding the tyres and designing a great all around car - nothing will change

Well, they managed to turn things around after struggling with the tyres massively in early 2017 for instance, without any changes. It's definitely possible if you have the resources.

Christian Menath from Motorsport-Magazin (Germany) said that many believe that Pirelli mandated lower tyre pressures for the 2020 tyres than the 2019 tyres in order to lure teams into deciding for the 2020 tyre.

Only Grosjean and Ocon talked, Grosjean was critical; Ocon avoided the tyre topic entirely.

So he asked engineers and they say that the tyres have similar issues as the 2019 tyres (overheating, etc.), but that they are on top of it much slower (some say up to a second), though he thinks that it's maybe down to them having more experience with the 2019 tyres, so that they could be naturally biased.

He thinks that the lack of media sessions is down to political reasons: If a driver says that the tyre is good and then the team discovers that the tyre isnt to the teams liking it would look odd if they vote against it.
