NASCAR does their own doping policing, which is a terrible conflict of interest. Good for business. They don't have to sweat about this topic for example.

FIM testing frequency is unimpressive. No out-of-competition tests listed. I wouldn't say they are more "serious" than FIA.

Except for the Olympics/Paralympics WADA doesn’t administer the tests or manage the signatories programs.  They do it themselves through independent labs that are WADA certified.  Nascar’s program is aimed more toward substance abuse than performance enhancement.  In motorsport having a addict behind the wheel or in the garage is far more dangerous than using a performance enhancer.   In fact the official name of the Nascar policy is the “substance abuse policy” with the stated goal of a drug free workplace.  Anti doping is included but incidental.

The testing samples are taken by Drug Free Sport who do most of the major sanction sports in the US using an independent medical review officer that is not a Nascar employee but a contractor for this specific purpose.   The samples are processed by SMRTL in Salt Lake a WADA certified facility.   SMRTL also processes tests for WADA signatory samples including the IOC.  Prior to the Mayfield incident the program was a cluster.  Since then it’s developed into a comprehensive program for a drug free workplace.

There’s also Frank Montagny who tested positive for a cocaine derivative after the second round of the first Formula E championship.

Performance enhancing, in addition to Enge:

- Jeremy Mayfield

- A.J. Allmendinger

- Tarso Marques

- Franck Montagny

- Anthony Kumpen

https://en.wikipedia..._in_auto_racing

Montagny was cocaine, so not a PED, and the others were not busts by the FIA.  I have long suspected that there is PED usage in motorsports and that the FIA would much rather turn a Nelsonian eye to it.

RUSADA has appealed. It's unlikely to succeed, but will delay any action for months at least.

Montagny tested positive after a race, so he may well have intended or imagined that the cocaine would enhance his performance, regardless of whether it actually did. Wrt the others not being FIA busts, they were busts mostly if not entirely by FIA affiliates; I'm not sure how it would have worked if the positive test had been reported but the national affiliate had chosen not to take action, but as a rule one would expect the local authority to act forthwith, precluding the need for the FIA itself to get involved.

Wrt your broader point, you may be right that the FIA would like to turn a blind eye. It is however my sense that Todt's FIA has chosen to take the politically correct route whenever it is possible for it to do so. As almost everyone condemns the use of PEDs (unlike for political disputes in F1 host countries, where things are often ambiguous), for the FIA to come down hard when there is evidence of PED use should be a no-brainer for them.

I would love for you to explain this one on Paddock Club. The current alleged Anti-Russian sentiment is more dangerous than a war that almost killed everyone on this planet on a exchange of dozens of nuclear weapons, and did lead to countless proxy hot wars all over the world?

He won't bother responding. He ignores comments that he doesn't like.

There isnt a thread in Paddock Club on this topic - when last I checked - and I've had posts removed for being too political in this topic. so I cant go there here.

But yes, I do to tend ignore posts that I dont think much of ... time is limited .. and its better than being insulting (expressly or by implication) to the person who posted.

You can check with slartibartfast but I'm 100% certain you're welcome to open topics in PC if there aren't any for the topic you'd wish to discuss. Meanwhile RC is for racing comments, so you need to stick to the topic, or else there'd be no point in having different fora for different topics.

He drove a mini and kept his stash in the cap in the center of the steering wheel.

Based on what?

My instinctive cynicism, and of course on the fact that in EVERY other sport, there seems to be proven use of PEDs, often detected and punished with sometimes draconian penalties.  Yet strangely, the FIA have not managed to bring themselves to even suspect that there is any doping in motorsport, let alone detect it.  If athletes in other sports are prepared to risk doping even though there is genuine testing and enforcement, do you really imagine that race drivers will not do so, when they know that there is apparently zero chance of ever getting caught?  After all, we all know that nobody in motor sport would ever consider cheating..... ;)

What substances are likely to make somebody a better racing driver ?

Faster muscle gain could be needed if training has been slacking.

Weight loss drugs, unless driver ballast is used.

Mental focus stuff. I think these are debated if they actually help a healthy person. But there are users in students for example.

I'm no expert (honest) but several medicines are said to improve focus and concentration, while some (e.g. modafinil) are supposed to improve reaction times. No idea if anyone uses them, but it would be surprising if nobody has explored the possibility that drugs could improve performance.

There's various medicines and stimulants that some use to improve focus or improve mental ability in some way. There's a big question mark over how effective any of these substances actually are however.

Over the years there's been a few rumours about various drivers supposedly taking all sorts of things to improve their reactions or become more alert. But again, there's never been any actual evidence over whether any of this really works.

I doubt whether there is/are actually (a) substance(s) that make mediocre drivers into world champions. Perhaps I am wrong about this. But it is obvious that muscle matter alone does not make anybody a better driver. Are there really drugs that help/allow you to concentrate better ? (Apart from nicotine of course.)

Adderall improves focus and concentration.  That’s a clinical reason for dispensing the drug for a non PED ailment.

Some of these banned stimulants, such as modafinil, are also used to treat narcolepsy and ADHD.
