I've mentioned this title on TNF reasonably often through various thread topics, but just maybe it deserves a thread of its own.

For those that don't know, AMC is published by Chevron Publishing Group in Sydney. Formerly publishers of now defunct 'Motor Racing Australia' that essentially evolved from the final incarnation of Racing Car News. All titles that have had TNF member involvement.

AMC-1-113-TNF.jpg

The first issue of AMC is dated Summer 02 and today issue #113 hit the newsagents. Currently on a cycle of a new issue every 7 weeks.

The mag title might be off-putting for some diehard racing fans who prefer their racing cars without a roof, however the title has evolved enough to know that Brock, Moffat, Johnson, Falcon GT and Monaro aren't the only players in Australian motor racing history. Even if that probably helps sell more copy!

Today's new issue comes with features relating to...

Tributes to Peter Molloy - covering his racing car engine/ preparation and Mike Raymond - speedway and touring car promotion and telecasting.

Ken Miles and his Lakeside Shelby Cobra visit

(Best known as) 1960's Holden driver, Herb Taylor

While on the back page David 'Seldo' Seldon gets a bit of coverage about racing a Holden Gemini.

plus more...

I have no connection to Chevron, gotta pay for my copy too. Just letting others know what's happening in the land 'down under' in what is a shrinking enthusiast motoring magazine market.

Sadly, this magazine is not what it was when it didn't have so many issues each year. The big stories were better, and the letters section in particular is now a pale shadow of its former self. Thankfully, I have plenty of back issues yet to order.

That's an inherent problem with this type of magazine...

The big stories were in the earlier issues, now it has to dig deeper into stuff not so well-known.

Stephen,

The core of it has never been my thing given the taxi content but I bought it for particular cars of interest when the detailed long features of Mark Oastler were something no-one else was doing- I still have those.

I pitched my McCormack McLaren article to Luke West, the then editor, who was very kind but it wasn’t their thing at the time so I thought ‘fuggit’ and did my own thing with primo.

I must buy this issue tho Paul Newby was telling me about his Ken Miles piece a few weeks back and I am a Peter Molloy fan...

Given Steve Normoyle has recently taken over the editorial chair there's been some changes at AMC. I'll concede that as much as I hate the title 'Punter Pics' it's unearthed some great photos and would like to see it re-instated. Plus, back to a couple more pages of letters, that have often revealed some unknown or different perspectives to a story that's been run.

I'm all for the rest of the format of having to dig deeper to find stories that haven't been told and retold umpteen times before. Australian motor racing history and the once healthy car industry have had many players and they aren't just the ones I mentioned in the opening post. Writing stories on the 'down the grid' drivers might be a bit too niche for some, but for me there's often some interesting snippets revealed.

Although I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the Moffat RX7 story a couple of issues ago... WAY more than I enjoy the sound of rotaries...

AMC have lost the plot to a degree, ricers are not Muscle Cars. Interesting maybe but not Muscle.

They are struggling for interesting subjects. Skylines, Sierras may be fast but again not Muscle. Only got 4 cyl

XU1, Pacer, Charger were 6 cyl Muscle.

Chevron have a couple of "oneshot" publications planned for 2020 on the "Muscle Racers" as promoted in the latest edition.

A couple of corrections. 57 Graham Bailey was written by L West and 91 Bob Holden was actually written by yours truly. The James McCoy Lancaster credit was a production error. You can see that the "current" Bob Holden had my name credited as the photographer. The editor owed me a couple of beers after that gaff...

Also the next "cab off the rank" is Seldo. I spent a couple of enjoyable hours with David back in October. I just have to write it up over the Christmas break.

Paul, I wondered about the Bob Holden credit, given I was aware prior to publication you were interviewing him as part of the Cooper S issue. List now fixed.

The oneshot publication you refer 'AMC Muscle Racers Volume 1' came out in November. It has features on Colin Bond, Fred Gibson, Bob Morris, Peter Janson, Bob Skelton, Steve Masterton & Bill Brown.

I do hope someone with some investigative common sense does the Bill Brown story...

He will always be underrated if not.

I will have to hit up Editor Steve for a copy of “Volume 1” and get myself put back onto the AMC “Free List.” I had to buy my own copy of the magazine for the first time in over 8 years...

Bill Brown was done back in Issue 27. The focus of the profile will be alway touring car centric but does cover all aspects of a driver’s career.

Yeah, he was underrated in the tintops too...

What do people remember about Bill Brown? Crashes at Bathurst. Crashes which were not altogether his fault.

But do they remember that he set fastest laps there? That he was sent out in two other cars to get them further up the grid when their imported star drivers couldn't?

Of course not.

So my copy finally arrived in my letterbox yesterday, over a week after it hit the newsstands. Sure there were the Christmas holidays in between but the subscriber copies should arrive before the newsstands. Not good enough Australia Post...! :(

I find it strange that I can't seem to see Ian "Pete" Geoghegan's name on the list in post #8

He was FIVE times Australian Touring Car Champ and one of Australia's greatest ever drivers.

Must be a strange selection criteria that excludes him?

The Muscle Man feature has always, with one exception, been profiles on drivers who were alive at the time for interview. The first Muscle Man feature was published in 2005 whereas Geoghegan died in 2003.

Anyway, his past misdemeanours, would make it difficult for anyone to publish a profile on him in this increasingly PC world. So it is unlikely to happen. In any case a lot of his racing history has been covered via profiles on the famous muscle cars that he raced.

Were they really “misdemeanours”?

I understand Leo had similar issues to Ian yet Leo got an article based on his racing success only.

Why not the same for Ian?

Misdemeanors enough to put him in gaol...

Sure, he hit the bottle and so did Leo, but that was nothing to do with it.

The new issue of AMC (#114) came out in Aussie newsagents on Thursday. Bolwell enthusiasts (wirra) rejoice,  as there's a large feature on old and new Nagari. Wth both featuring on the prime cover spot.

TNF gets a mention in Paul Newby's column on how persistence secured an interview with recently departed, Horst Kwech and Paul also wrote this issue's Muscle Man feature on TNF member 'Seldo' aka David Seldon.

Plus plenty more to read and view, including a mainly pictorial piece on the 1974 Surfers Paradise Australian Touring Car Championship round with some great photos.

1974 Surfers?

1974 Surfers?

Wasn't that the thermostat race?

1975, it seems.

From here:

https://en.wikipedia...iki/Allan_Grice

"In 1975, Allan Grice put up his strongest challenge for the Australian Touring Car Championship. Grice would have won the championship had he not been disqualified from rounds five, seven and eight. In round five, at Surfers Paradise, Grice won the race but was disqualified following a protest lodged by Holden Dealer Team manager Harry Firth. Firth correctly contended that the thermostat from the Holden V8 engine in Grice's Craven Mild Torana L34 was in fact in the car's glovebox and not where it should have been. This led to speculation that Firth had managed to convince one of Grice's mechanics to put the item in the glovebox in a bid to sabotage his season[citation needed], which at that point saw Grice leading the points table. Firth's lead driver Colin Bond went on to win the 1975 ATCC. Grice continued the season after appealing the disqualification, but once the appeal was upheld he lost all points from the remaining rounds."

Thanks Stephen for the free promotion...

I also wrote the Whaddayaknow tailpiece but was uncredited. We even give a sneak peak of an upcoming feature to keep TerryS happy. :)

I have glimpsed through the latest edition with the tale of Seldo.

And the Bolwell.

I was unaware they made a Camry powered model 10 years ago. Last

Though had been aware that a V8 one was coming then available.A pretty car, the article also heavily featured the Nagaris of the 70s.

Now even I know it was only the early ones that used a 302W, most were Clevo powered, generally 302s. Ford deleted the 302W in 71 with XY.

It is a nice looking car but I suspect expensive. Small volume is actively discouraged these days by Govts. Yet the Brabhams made here were touted by the SA Govt. Though I dont think that they are available for the road, at least here in Oz? Would be a far more practical car than most exotics and the engine does have ADR certification via Holden.

K&A made at least one road going  VesKANDA and that was certified with the then top of the line Holden V8. And many things like swedged brake hoses etc. I dont thing it has ever hit the road which is a pity.

I have just received issue #114 of AMC in the mail today (Monday).

The benefits of being a subscriber......

I have to question the choice of this month's Muscle Man. The guy has NEVER won a major race nor championship.

How is he selected ahead of a guy that is five times Australian Touring Car champion and one of Australia's greatest ever drivers.

A strange selection criteria.

I think its best to completely skip the Muscle Man section of each issue.

I believe David Seldon did win several races and one championship...

Whether or not they were 'major' would depend on your point of view, I guess. Didn't he say he got fastest Falcon lap at Bathurst once?

The guy has NEVER won a major race nor championship. How is he selected ahead of a guy that is five times Australian Touring Car champion and one of Australia's greatest ever drivers.A strange selection criteria.I think its best to completely skip the Muscle Man section of each issue.

Yes, Australia Post really sucks.

I explained why Big Pete can never be profiled in a previous post. You won’t find the answer on Google but if you want to PM me I will tell you. I’m sure Ray Bell would do likewise.

As for featuring David Seldon, well we’ve profiled almost 100 drivers over the last 15 years. There aren’t a lot of drivers left to cover! One of the tenets for these features is that it has to be an entertaining yarn and ‘Seldo’ can certainly tell a story. Plus he had a long 20 year career primarily because he was a good steerer and always in demand. His story deserves to be told and you won’t read it anywhere else nor see the accompanying photos some of which have never been published before.

Geez David,a bit harsh,he's just expressing an opinion.

I've heard far worst criticism of Drivers, and people, over the years and i've been on the Internet starting with the message Boards of the 1990's.

I gather you've never been on the receiving end of Terry's criticism?

David's post's been deleted, but I thought it explained his position well...

"well we’ve profiled almost 100 drivers over the last 15 years. There aren’t a lot of drivers left to cover!"

Thinking about this and quickly came up with the following list of 40 potential candidates for consideration as Muscle Man. Some are very well known names.

Terry, I don't think all of them fit within the ambit of the magazine's direction...

And some, of course, are no longer with us.

The editorial team are actually getting concerned about how narrow the magazine's range is, even though they've expanded it over the years.

Ray for interest it would be greatly appreciated if you could advise those on my list in post 36 who 'are no longer with us" as I like to keep up to date.

The only doubtful one I had was Bill Warner.

I doubt even Ray would be able to "advise those who 'are no longer with us'".   ;)

You're right, dead right...

I'm sure that Bob Beasley died quite young, but he wouldn't be the only one. And I believe a few of the others are well into dementia too.

Funny - I don't see the legendary TerryS there....

Must only steer a key-board...

I was very pleased to read your profile in AMC Seldo - very well deserved. I thought your Clubman exploits might have warranted a bit more coverage - you must have scored a bucket load of wins/podiums from hard fought races.....

I've weakened my 4 year magazine hiatus and bought a copy of the latest issue just to read the exploits of Seldo.
A story that deserved to be told.

Have they done Bruce Stewart yet?

Using a scale of fame, experience in different classes, brands of car, driving skill,

importance to the sport, length of career etc etc, I would put David Seldon right in the middle of that list.

There are several drivers on that list who are as obscure to me as David Seldon is to the person who compiled it.

Bruce Stewart was covered in the group profile of the Festival of Motorsport driver trainers back in AMC 69 and a separate profile in AMC 101 where I interviewed Bruce in company with his son Darren at the 2017 MCM. A lovely humble guy who was incredibly modest about his racing achievements.

He hasn't changed over all those years, then?

I wouldn't have expected it.

Thanks Lindsay. Yes, we had a fun very successful time in clubmans with several lap records , many wins and places, a championship and a runner-up, but AMC's audience is touring cars, so that's understandable.

A lovely bloke. I first met Bruce as a 17yo at Catalina when I pointed-out to him on the dummy-grid that one of his rear tyres was down to the canvas, and he just laughed it off with a humorous throw-away comment ...

That race he put it on its lid when the tyre failed...

I read Seldo's tribute on the magazine when it came out (power of internet...), veering on the cult of personality  :)  with full page photo of the bearded young man, but I understand Allan Moffat wasn't exactly a fan... LOL
