Since the images have all disappeared from the previous thread I thought I would start again.  This thread is dedicated to Mal Simpson, Australian race mechanic who spannered for David McKay in Australia before heading to the UK and working for the Lotus F1 team in 1959-61 and then Rob Walker from 1961-63, as well as being Stirling Moss's mechanic for the 1962 Tasman series.  I am privileged to be custodian of his personal collection of photos, memorabilia, posters and books.

Goodness me, what a generous thing to do. Many thanks. I am sure it will expose Mal's various endeavours at the heart of the sport to another wide audience.

Very nice indeed...

But could you please do it with the 'Hotlink for forums' instead of thumbnails?

Wonderful images, many thanks for going to the trouble of re-posting them. Are there any details on the back of the photos or captions in an album, that you could add, please? I can make a stab at one or two (post #9 looks like a happy team after Stirling's 1961 German GP victory, for example) but if the ID/location info already exists, it would save a lot of digging! I'm particularly interested in dating the second image posted, of the Lotus 18. Again, really appreciate your posting of them!

Sorry Michael, only a few have post it notes on them with some information.  At the moment I only the digital copies with me in lock down.  I will add what I can later but most will have to be worked out, which should keep us all busy :)

Without the photos it's a bit of a challenge to work everything out, and I do wish I'd recorded more info from the original thread. But answers for many of the photos reposted here, can be found on the old thread. https://forums.autos...tus-time-sheet/

Post 13's photo in this thread is all mentioned by Tim Murray and myself in post 61 & 62 in the original thread.

Being the 1960 Argentine GP grid and detailed as...

46 Alberto Larreta Lotus 16

6 Carlos Menditeguy Cooper Maserati

16 Bruce McLaren Cooper- Climax - eventual winner

38 Maurice Trintignant / Stirling Moss Cooper Climax

34 (in front of 6) Harry Schell Cooper Climax

18 Jack Brabham Cooper Climax

(red nose just visible over McLaren) 32 Jose Froilan Gonzalez Ferrari

30 Taffy von Trips Ferrari

26 Phil Hill Ferrari

24 Cliff Allison Ferrari

Then front row (right to left) 36 Stirling Moss Cooper Climax - pole, 20 Innes Ireland Lotus, 42 Graham Hill BRM (hidden) & 40 Jo Bonnier BRM

The Anderson/ Pitt D Type, subject of a recent book. Haven't worked out exactly where, Lowood perhaps? But the car often ran as car #1 at Lowood. If Mal took the photo then David McKay must have been running an Aston. I think the NCN 040 numberplate was visible there during 1957/58 events.

Worth noting here is that I've recently found 2 Lotus 18 photos in John Tipler's 'Lotus Racing Cars - Club Racers to World Champions 1948 - 1968' book.

Page 78 has Jim Clark talking to Mal at Spa and page 81 Mal is on the grid behind Innes' car at Reims.

Derek Jolly Decca Climax November or December 1956 Albert Park (consecutive weekend meetings). Heading down Aughtie Drive in the original anti-clockwise direction.

My guess re Jaguar D-Type pic: Bathurst October 1956. Perhaps those sheds are up the slope behind Hilton Rayner's house?

Post #45...1962 Oulton Park Gold Cup...Ian Walker Lotus 23s for Bruce Johnstone and Paul Hawkins.  Looks like John Pledger leaning over the one on the right.

Taking John's lead, the programme for the Sunday, 30 September 1956 Bathurst meeting does indeed have the Anderson/Pitt D Type as car 9.

This meeting may also help place Stan Coffey's Ferrari Monza (shown in post 20), as it was car 92 at that same meeting.

I'll also take a guess that posts 19 & 22 show the Dr Boorman C Type from either Easter Mon, 11 April 1955 or 1 October 1955 Bathurst where it carried (and is hidden) car 6 at both meetings. The small rectangle visible behind the rear wheel arch might be the hair splitting clue to which one.
