Might I commend to TNF this lovely video - Hugh Langrishe who was Ron Flockhart's sometime friend and business partner - recommended to me by present-day D-Type owner Clive Beecham and I think admirably well made...  Lovely gentleman too, now 96 years old - and ex-RN FAA quite apart from the Ecurie Ecosse connection.

I just watched this. What a charming gentleman. He is right of course, the "big six" does sound magnificent. Thanks for the tip Doug.

There is nothing quite so evocative as the sound of a D type Jaguar (and C type) at full tilt and how appropriate is the charming Hugh Langrishe, many thanks Doug.

What a beautifully made film, wonderful.  It is so important to perserve these recollections which otherwise would be lost. How thoughful of Clive Beecham to take the trouble to organise the visit to Hugh.

Thanks for sharing it.

Yes quite excellent and nostalgic for us older folk for whom motor racing in the 1950s was what taught us to be interested in the sport.

Sadly, I'm of a more recent vintage, so have no real connection to that area beyond fascination and respect.

Doug, what a magnificent document, I shed a tear...Thank you so much for sharing.

Mister Langrishe is a true gentleman, was he 96 at the time the film was shot in 2019 ? So he his probably born in 1923...If you see what I have in mind.

What a splendid nugget of a film, made me realise how spoiled I was taking four rolls of 36 exposures each to Le Mans for the first time in 1981.

As an aside, it must have been tremendous for Ivor Bueb to be able to celebrate a Le Mans win properly, after the 1955 event.

Yes, it was nice to see 'Ivor The Driver' being able to smile.

The way it used to be...

Hugh Beecham has just sent me this link, saying "I found this snippet that I hadn’t seen before, on Hugh Langrishe. It’s a ‘finished on the cutting floor’ part of ‘The Big Six‘ short film that Cave Bear did on Hugh which is also found on You Tube, so not seen before".

Thanks so much, Doug. That's put a smile on my face.

What a charming gentleman, and he's dead right about colour, sound and speed too

Paul

Today Hugh Langrishe is 100 years old. For those of you who haven’t seen the video in post #1 by Miura SV, just listen to Hugh’s wonderful ability to communicate on motor racing with that truly wonderful voice of his. This man, who served in the Fleet Air Arm (Royal Navy Airforce) during the war, tells the story of Le Mans 1957 and his Friendship of Ron Flockhart who won the 24 Hours 1956 and 1957. Hugh was the time keeper in 1957 and one gets a hugely interesting perspective of what racing was like tin those far off days. His natural humility and decency is perhaps the most wonderful thing to witness, alongside some great colour film of Jaguars, Ferraris and Maseratis. Happy Birthday Hugh..
