Could not find a 2020 thread to discuss the fortunes of Checo, Lance and the team, so I started one. Seemed appropriate since they are further up the grid, at least to start the new season,

So...
Maybe Perez' race setup focus is to blame for this 'shortcoming'?
The team already spoke with caution about their right out pace and questioned their raw speed in comparison with Ferrari and McLaren, but they clearly got more in their car than what Sergio could deliver yesterday. Hopefully their true pace is mostly delivered in races and can defend themselves on Saturdays, and we're in for two outstanding seasons.
Hopefully...

Disappointing day for the team. With what transpired today (misadventure to others), RP should have scored good points from Stroll, and a podium from Perez. The potential is there, and the next race is a week away.

If I were to guess the team felt they would have given up track position, they were running ahead of Mclaren if they had pitted they would assume they would end up behind them and Leclerc and having to fight their way passed. Instead all those three pitted and Racing Point was stuck trying to fend them off on old worn tyres.
I'm still puzzled by the decision. It's Austria, not Monaco or Barcelona. Track position isn't that clearly "king" in this place. IMHO it was a terrible decision. Leclerc, Norris and Sainz got completely free pit stops; penalty or not Checo was going to lose out to them with those worn mediums.

Everyone is leaving their doors open...
https://racer.com/20...s-with-renault/
"Another team Vettel was asked about is Racing Point, and while he was less committal about talks with the future Aston Martin team, he acknowledged that the team’s level of competitiveness this season has caught his eye.
“I think Racing Point left a very strong impression, and are certainly are in a good place for this year,” he noted. “I know some members of the team quite well from my past and for a long time. It’s obviously a good opportunity for them this year, to have a good car to fight with and try and improve from there.”"

RP paying the price today of not signing a strong qualifier for this season. With Lance's seat guaranteed, that isn't likely to change any time soon.

Does the team bet everything on the qualifying being on Sunday?
Perez was simply nowhere...

RP's performance today was a bit of a mystery. As I said in the Williams' (edit - actually it was the Renault) Team thread, so much was dependent on being on fresh wets, at exactly the right time. Stroll was 1 corner away from Q3, while Perez was nowhere today ... did they have different set-ups, knowing tomorrow would be dry? I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Racing Point are not used to being frontrunners. They are so used to being the team qualifying out of the top 10 with the alternate strategy, then using alternate pit stop from behind to leap frog. When the roles are reversed, they have no idea how to front run.

Both seats are guaranteed ... Perez has a multi-year contract and Stroll is signed for next year. Btw ... the 2 looked pretty good yesterday, so it may have something to do with set-up.

You knew coming into the season that this would be their achilles heel. Stroll is even infamous for it, e. g.

So it seems.
Or maybe they just thought they would copy the Merc's and everything would be ok!
.
Nah, I think it's again not used to being front runners. They'll learn from it.

What a race!
A patty for Lance that he couldn't make the move on Ricciardo earlier...
But I'm glad they do not settled for fifth and attacked that Red Bull.

Yes...
But I don't blame them either for betting all against the cancellation of the wet qualifying. It's been the norm that the FIA cancels everything if three drops of rain fall.
They need to pick up the pace of mind at the pitwall!

Perez had a great race. He made a mistake with Albon in the end that put a dent on his race, but before that...a lot of wow. Pace was great, tyre management was great, his move around the outside of Sainz was great

The learning curve is tough, they have to grow in all the other aspects that an increment in pace relate to...
They understand that and if there's a team capable of metamorphosize throughout the season is precisely Racing Point. In the past it was forced due to development and resources restrictions, and today it's because of dealing with racing situations that they didn't had the opportunity to be involved in regularly. I expect more strategy mistakes and racing mistakes, from drivers, mechanics and the pitwall, but hopefully the learning curve is fast and they can maximize the results the car is capable of.

This is spot on! Austria 1 was clearly a situation they haven't had to deal with it. It's relatively easy to roll the strategy dice when you're 13th on the grid, how do you play strategy when you're running at the front? It's a different game and they got caught out being too conservative. Pretty clear why a small team would do that...
They'll learn. I loved in the last race a couple of Perez' passes (on Norris and on Sainz), I loved the wheel to wheel moment with Stroll...clearly Perez made a mistake with Albon, Stroll with Ricci, but the performance was there for both drivers. I think in Sergio's hands they'll race Albon pretty often.

Yep, and Perez was near the absolute back of the grid in Race 2. People forget that in a sport that is labeled as difficult to pass, Perez drove his RP20 from P17 at the end the first lap, to what was effectively P4 if he stuck the move on Albon. When do you hear a "midfield" car doing something like that. An achievement like that is typically reserved for a "Top 3" team.
Safety car or not, to get around that many cars through strategy or on track overtakes, in a sport labeled difficult to pass, and on a weekend when they cranked up the downforce making it slower in a straight line is impressive.

safety car was on lap 1, and his start wasn't stellar. He hovered around 16-17th place with the Ferrari incident in T3.

bloody hell , Even better than I thought. And to hunt down Albon after using his tires against all those other cars. You know you've got a massive pace advantage when you are passing cars as if aero wash doesn't apply to you....
I suspect if Racing Point had qualified where they should have....Perez would have given Bottas trouble for staying out so long.

For a driver who's been in the midfield for that long, he's not too bad on his first few laps.

This could turn out to be a great project with Aston Martin entering F1, Daddy Stroll supplying the cash and having a driver like Vettel who is still hungry and determined to win after coming out of the toxic environment from Maranello! There's only one downside to all of this: keeping Stroll junior instead of Perez. Now I'm not a Perez fan, but he definetly deserves a seat as he became a really solid driver over the years, plus the money his sponsors pay (added to Stroll's). So it would be a win-win situation if their driver lineup would consist of Vettel & Perez, but it's highly unlikely that this would happen. Stroll is going nowhere next year and probably he will be in F1 until he gets bored or his daddy pulls out.

Not sure any of this is a done deal yet, but in any case it would be better if a decision was to be made later, rather than sooner. I don't share your disdain for Lance,. He has looked much better this year, and waiting to make a decision later in the year, would allow him time to make his case.

I'll bet 10$ that they changed a bit the setup to a wet race or mix condition - car was a bit less snappy then in FP3.
Amazing result, line 2 locked and let's hope the boys will have a great start tomorrow, one pink ahead of black in corner 2
RP getting to Q3 on medium tyres, well, now i can say that i've seen something new ... it says all you need to know about how good the car is.
