I received an invitation to take part in a fan survey by F1 specifically regarding the Saudi race and my thoughts/feelings toward it.

Did anyone else take part? And do you think it would change the intent to go there?

Also bolted on was some questions on night races... do you think they add to F1 and are any more exciting? They are lit up so brightly that i don’t think it makes a difference!

No, but I'd be curious to know what the questions were, if you don't mind?

No need to share your responses, of course.

the results will be spinned to death to somehow justify that the fans arent strongly opposed the race. We all know how this works.

Correct, which is unfortunate as this is arguably the worst possible country F1 have ever decided to host a race in.

I haven't received that survey yet, but since I completed the one about the 2021 calendar I suspect I might be on their list.

I made a few comments about Saudi Arabia being the race I was "least looking forward to"...indeed stated I will not be watching it on any platform.

Let me guess, are these the possible multiple choice answers?

  • Yes, I'm excited for the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix
  • Yes, I'm looking forward to the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix
  • Yes, I can't wait for the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix
  • No, but I like to be positively surprised.

Remember to enter the prize draw for a chance to win an indefinite stay at the Riyadh Ritz-Carlton.

Instead of being sarcastic and negative, we could also applaud that F1 is organizing a Fan survey for this.

But of course the initial reaction is cynicism :).

They asked if you knew there was a race in Saudi Arabia, how excited were you, would you go and a text box for other comments. There was also a question about how psyched or other wise you are about it being a night race.

So yeah, you absolutely could say yes, I know there’s going to be a race, no I am not at all excited, hell no am I going and I don’t give a rats ass about the night element to it all, for example.

Were FOM concerned about potential fan reaction they would have commissioned the survey prior to adding the race.

So, after adding the race it then suddenly is better not to ask the fans their view?

Not when we all know they will completely ignore any feedback that doesn't fit the 'Wow. a race in Saudi Arabia!  I can't wait!' scenario. Or do you fondly imagine that a negative response will lead to the race being cancelled?

I have received an invite to the survey and hopefully made my reaction clear.

I suspect a majority of respondents will be somewhat positive about night races in general and that F1 will use this to justify the race.  But at least they've reached out to get an idea of how many existing fans are feeling about this race. I don't expect it to be cancelled, but do expect them to realise they need to do some work on justifying it.

Lmao. Another crappy "Money GP"

I thought the fossil fuel era was coming to an end?

Stop selling out to the pedrodollars FFS. Keep the races where the fans are.

We've got already Bahrain and Abu Dhabi there, thats already too much IMO... and now a 3rd one?

What usually happens with these sort of things is that they will pick out any positives and if there are none, then they will just quietly file the results away in the dumpster around the back.

For certain criteria and within a reasonable level of confidence, yes. When it happens and I am wrong about this, you can remind eveyone.

I will not make myself better than I am, if the WDC is tight and Saudi Arabia could swing it I will most likely watch, of does not mean anything I will pass - All that will really do is make me a hypocrite, and Liberty not the least concerned.

You should ask Liberty for a job, being able to save them from wasting their money on surveys would be a good interview pitch.

Although it would/will help to know what they actually ask as part of the survey...

Unless otherwise written in ( ) after a question, they are multi-choice questions.

  • Did you know about it before today?
  • What are your initial feelings towards the introduction of a race in Saudi Arabia?
  • How excited are you for the race in Saudi Arabia?
  • Provided its safe to attend races in 2021, how likely would you be to attend the Saudi Arabian GP in 2021?
  • How likely will you be to attend a Saudi Arabian race at any point in the future?
  • You said you were unlikely to ever attend a race in Saudi Arabia, what are the main reasons you would be unlikely to attend? (Textbox answer, question based on what you have answered previously)

That's half the survey. Then there is "Thoughts about night races in general"

  • Do you think that the decision to run the Saudi Arabian GP at night will make the race more exciting?
  • Overall, do you think that night races are better/worse than F1 races run in the day?
  • Do you think that Formula 1 should look to have more/less night races on the calendar?
  • If you have any more comments on night races or the Saudi Arabian GP, please feel free to put them here. (Textbox answer)

Whoa, I want one of those too in my inbox.

Would love to highlight how completely hyped I am for this new race in a high-tech modern venue in such a forward thinking exotic place - home of ARAMCO.

Also would love to add on it that I am also hyped for Rio replacing boring Interlagos and a redundant suburban forest, how proud I am of what a great job Masi is doing, how amazing the DRS looks under the lights, the phenomenal services offered by the official app F1TV, how much I miss the mascot, what can I do to make sure they add more HUGE VIRTUAL FAN SCREENS during a race and to let them know that so many of my friends would tune into the races if they were reverse grid.

Not a waste of money, though, as I pointed out in my other post. There's a difference between knowing something as fact and having hard evidence to back it up (any lawyer will tell you that). But here, it's pretty simple. The suggestion is that people might not watch the F1 race on TV because they are opposed to the regime in the country hosting it. Well I say:

1. Not many will even know about it

2. Even fewer will care about it

3. Of those that know any care, they will be forced to choose between two things they care about F1 and the regime in the country

I would say it's a pretty tall order to think that there will be more than a small small percentage of the F1 audience left once you whittle it down like that. But, even then, it can be whittled down further because, amongst that small group will be some that realise that their actions will amount to nothing and will then not bother.

I've not seen the survey, but surveys have been my job for most of my career. Are you sure your not confusing the term "multiple choice". A multiple choice question is a question where several choices are presented and more than one can be selected. On the other hand, if a list of choices are presented (that's known as a closed-ended question) but only one of the choices can be selected, then that's a single choice question.

So a question like "Did you know about that before today?" is almost certainly going to be single choice. I would expect the list of choices to be "Yes" and "No" with the possibility of "Not sure" too. But only one choice is valid (you can't answer both "Yes" and "No"). Whereas a question like "Which of these races did you attend?" would probably be multiple choice, because it would have a list of races and the respondent may well have attended more than one.

To complete the lesson, here's the basic types of question:

- Single choice (where a list of choices are presented and the respondent can select, at most, one)

- Multiple choice (where a list of choices are presented and the respondent can select more than one)

- Open-ended (where the respondent is asked a question that they can answer in their own words)

- Quantity (where the respondent is asked to provide a value - a number or a date, for example - the range of which may be limited or not)

Sure! I mean, English isn't my first language, and when you can choose between answers, it's called "multiple-choice" in my native language. As "single-choice" is no choice, it's just... single (again, in my native language). So, I'm sure you're right with regards to how it actually is in English ;)

Common usage in English is "multiple choice". I'm not going to question pdac's specialist knowledge, but there's a difference between specialist knowledge and common usage.

For an example from my specialisation (which is a bit more relevant to here) it's a bit like people who say "spolier" when they mean "wing".

It’s a moot point.  The race has been added. FOM ins’t going to yank the contract based on the results of the survey.  The House of Saud is in the middle of a “rebranding” so to speak.  They’re opening up for tourism like the Emirates have and need to polish their image to do so.

My problem, not yours. I wasn't sure whether it was originally just confusion. But it's my problem that I'm disturbed by other meanings being attached to terms that I understand to mean something specific - which is absolutely illustrated by the "spoiler"/"wing" example.

Maybe a thread like this can lead media (looking at you Autosport) raise the critical questions of going there.

The first obstacle in overcoming that would be for the current Autosport staff to discover they have a forum.

Well I for one will not be purchasing any F1 "tat" (hats, shirts, coats etc) anymore as well as not buying the next F1 game etc.  I also expect them to spin this so hard in whatever positive direction they can find that the earth will go into reverse.

I feel like a lot of this opposition would appear a lot stronger if there hadn't already been a rather successful Saudi ePrix just last year. F1 isn't leading the way here.

The survey appeared for me on F1 Fan Voice. I let them know my feelings about adding a Saudi race (and similar sentiments concerning one or two others as well).

I'm a believer in sport as a way to open dialogue on contentious issues but I haven't seen any evidence of this having worked with Saudi Arabia as of yet. Others have gone there, and I even supported some of those decisions initially, but my mind has changed. I need to see real action, not words and money thrown at attracting international events for pr purposes.

FE is a ripple across a lake compared to F1's stormy North Atlantic media and Joe Public knowledge wise.

The thought has struck me that apologists for the F1 race may well be missing the fact that they think everything is fine because "a rather successful Saudi ePrix" has already taken place, and not appreciate that they have been well and truly had. Sportswashing in full effect my friend.

Ever heard of the phrase "buttered up"?

I just think a lot of this opposition is too late to stop the Grand Prix happening. If nobody cared enough for FE, then why should F1 be any different?

I hear what you're saying and appreciate that of course.

But a group like Amnesty International, while it does have a massive budget, they still have to use that budget wisely and I dare say they'd simply have been wasting money and staff resources if they'd gone in full force over the FE race - just on the basis that hardly anyone watches FE, and beyond the specialist motorsport press it gets zero coverage in the media unless a cool-looking crash has happened. So, as with all things publicity, they've gone for the event that gets the most attention.

Did Amnesty know in advance that there'd be an F1 race announced though? Maybe taking a reactive stance was the only one available to them.
