I have mixed feelings: I attend Goodwood in-person and whilst 'OK' with TV coverage, it doesn't fill the need, other than to remind me of the good times I've experienced first-hand. I miss the smell, sound and sense of 'being there'.
Speedweek somehow feels like a bunch of lucky souls rubbing my nose in it.

Just watched the Goodwood Trophy Race Pre-War cars. Wonderful to see real racing cars in action again.

Well, the SF Edge race provided the best racing I've seen this year! Splendid duel!
Posted 16 October 2020 - 16:00
I watched the SF Edge and Goodwood Trophy races. Both great and the live feed is much appreciated.

Max out the volume on your TV and put some motor oil in a pot and gently simmer, then breath deep and enjoy the show ;-)

I watched the SF Edge and my concerns melted away. I do really miss it though!

I've been watching it today here in Victoria, BC, Canada...though it's mostly done by the time I get up. I'm glad they show replays afterwards.

Watched the ITV4 2 hour programme yesterday evening (recorded it live). Less than 40 minutes racing was the usual coverage but the dross that made up the rest of the coverage was banal tp say the least.

I think we need to cut them a bit of slack there, Stephen. It's the need for a wider audience and the promotional potential for sponsors and advertisers that's paying for it, not us the viewers.
There was some entertaining stuff from Goodwood live online yesterday; it's not the Revival, but it's not pretending to be - it's something different and aimed at that wider audience. The bits that might interest us less are for going to make a cup of tea and for toilet breaks!
Thank you, Goodwood, for giving it ago in tricky times. The amount of planning needed for this is impressive (for example, the rallying parts, whilst very restricted in nature are imaginative given the constraints they're under - although the stages in the dark didn't work).
The Edwardians were amazing - looking forward to more of the same tomorrow.

I think they are doing a great job. The Edwardian race was the closest race I've seen all year. Makes the F1 lot look rather sad. The drone shots are fantastic. it's funny to see the lack of "theatre" though and to see the modern rescue units etc. Shows how clever they are at hiding them at other times.
I wonder if they picked a number of drivers with several cars to create a smaller bubble of drivers? Some of the guys are having a busy time jumping from one car to another.

Take a look on the Youtube stream: it's actually very good. Today has the promise of a new lap record.
But how I wish they'd let the sprint and hill climb cars have a go! No excuses this time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted 17 October 2020 - 09:44
Very confused.
Just started to watch the F.1 cars and they are interrupted by some strange feature about Goodwood stuff, but without sound. Sound eventually came back but where are my racing cars?
Turns out the uninterrupted track stream is only on the Goodwood website. You will need to sign up for a free account, which will give immediate access. But, annoyingly, it's through Brightcove Player, so can't be easily cast to a TV unless you have the latest version of Chromecast and can negotiate installing their extension!

Barry - watching online yesterday there was two streams: one more generalist with the background stuff, promotional things and suchlike and one which was essentially the racing with a few breaks. I think you have to "sign in" to that one - but unless you are buying something from them or some other activity and just watching (and are concerned about such things) don't think they will know any more about you than any other website one might frequent (and the terms about data use are spelt in more detail than on many a site).
I found a few mildly annoying glitches in it yesterday, but it ain't bad for free...

I discovered that too, so resorted to Youtube. ITV4 will no doubt do its best but will need their coverage to be aimed less at enthusiasts.

A friend told me yesterday that they'd streamed it to their ('smart'?) tv via an Amazon Firestick.
I was watching it via a desktop computer, primarily because I have a monitor that is bigger (and better quality) than my tv...

I've just been watching the TT Celebration practice. Quite a nice mixture of cars Jaguar E, Cobra, TVR, Sunbeam Tiger, Porsche, Lister Jag, Iso Grifo , Corvette .. but hang on, did I miss something, or was there not a single Ferrari in the entry for a race celebrating an event that was won by Ferrari in all the GT years of the TT at Goodwood?
Posted 17 October 2020 - 11:01
Perhaps the owners did not want to play or the cars/drivers are not in the UK?
I am always puzzled as to why the Lister Jag GT is allowed in.

Could be, although they usually manage to get a couple of SWB 250GTs if not GTOs. Yes, I am not sure why the Lister GT gets in but it has since the instigation of the event - I suppose you could argue that the 1964 TT did admit prototypes and sports racers, but you don't see any other such cars in the event.

When I first heard about this closed event it sounded a bit meh but I actually love watching it. Great that they did it and I really hope to be there again next year.
I wonder whether they will / are allowed to unleash the F1 cars without a pace car, at least those driven by pros.
Posted 17 October 2020 - 12:56
Does anyone know what the red and white can-am-ish car in the Whitsun Trophy was?
EDIT: Mike Thornton's McKee-Chevrolet.

Following on from my own observations above ... there are 2 or 3 250GTs in the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy event for GT cars.

They let Nick Padmore go for a standing start lap time in an Arrows-Ford A6 in some sort of shoot -out competition. He did a 1m 9 sec which is QUICK. That as 1983 car, so what a 2020 F1 car could do ...obviously sub 1 minute.
Posted 17 October 2020 - 18:25
Oh, easily… way back when, didn’t Jonathan Palmer do a 1m 6 something in the Ralt RH6? And I think I read that Denny Hulme went under 62sec with a Can Am McLaren in the early 70s. Flying laps in testing, obviously, but all a long time ago.
In the late 80s, when the Onyx team turned up at our Club trackday asking if they could do a quick shakedown of a totally untried car before heading off to a flyaway race, Stefan Johansson (I think it was) went under 63sec after just one out lap. Then one cooling down lap and they packed up and left. From memory those three laps paid for the whole day...

Those would have been flying lap times though - today's was from a standing start. That must add 10 secs or so?
On another point, I do enjoy it when racing commentators start talking about rallying when they clearly know very little about it. Today's man on the mic (was it David Addison?) said that Stig Blomqvist loved RWD cars far more than FWD. Evidently he didn't remember that Stig rallied FWD SAABs for a decade or more winning a hatful of top rallies and then went to 4WD Audis to win the WRC. His only serious RWD outings were in the works 2WD Sapphire Cosworth IIRC.
Anyway, the Original Stig is equally at home whichever wheels he is spinning. Good to see the old boy (well, he is older than me!) still showing the youngsters the way home.

And the more recent TV 'Stig' was racing too - Phil Keen.

And imagine what a hill climber or sprint car would do? It's a shame they couldn't have invited Scott Moran or Wallace Menzies. Previous reservations on hill climbers at FoS wouldn't stand. And I think Graeme Wight, Jr is still 3rd or 4th fastest up the hill.

Other RWD drives not to forget is among others his 4th. place in Sweden in '78 in a works entered Stratos.

He also had works outings for the works Talbot team in '81/'82 and secured the WC for makes with his performance in Finland and on the RAC.
Toivonen suffered mechanical failures on both those events and Des O'Dell was eternally grateful to Stig after that.
To my knowledge all Stig's outings in works Sierra Cosworths were in the original 3-door. "whale tail" version. The rest in the V6 XR 4x4 version during '87/'88.
I haven't seen the footage but apparently he won the first St Mary's Trophy race today in the Ford Galaxy.

Galaxie. A Ford Galaxy is a very different animal.
He had an entertaining race-long battle with Sam Tordoff in another Galaxie, but I had the impression Sam always had a bit in hand. Or at least, he did until the penultimate lap, when his car decided it didn't like its oil very much, started smoking at Lavant and then deposited most of the contents of its sump on the start/finish straight! So Stig won easily in the end.

Except at Brooklands. Official lap records there were set on solo timed runs outside competition. That of course dates back to when Lindsay Lloyd of the BARC first wrote the regulations for speed records in 1910 and initially applied only to the Outer Circuit, but was carried forward to the Mountain and Campbell Circuits too. Raymond Mays set the perpetual Campbell Circuit lap record two days after the final meeting in August 1939.

Posted 18 October 2020 - 18:02
Good effort by Mr Goodwood, but some disappointment. Qualifying and race positions on the screen made no mention of start number or type of car, so that made it difficult to follow what was going on. And the interviews sometimes gave the name of the interviewee, sometimes not. With face masks in place, it was difficult to find out who was talking. Anyway, carrying out an interview while racing cars are revving in the background is not a great idea, especially for those of us whose hearing is not longer what it once was.
Yes, i did enjoy it, but I feel that some minor changes could have made it much better. Looking forward to travel restrictions being lifted in 2021...hopefully!
