Vettel did an internship at an organic farm during lockdown

"Since I had more time than I had actually planned, I thought about what I could do and what interested me," Aston Martin driver Vettel explained, revealing that he moved to learn more practical farming skills.

"That's what interests me. At some point you realise that not every vegetable is the same, not every apple has the same nutrients, and then you ask why.
"Then you realise very quickly where the apple comes from and how it is grown - and that's how the doors opened for me.
"The theory interests me and I read about it a lot. But to learn more from the practical side and talk to the people who deal with it on a day-to-day basis, that was very interesting."

He is an interesting guy. I think this is great, although presumably as it's an organic farm, he wouldn't have been using any F1 seeds which seems a miss on behalf of fate. Feel free to use this thread to talk about Vettel's lockdown experience and other drivers' side projects.

Perhaps they could team up in some way! Jody Scheckter products still seem to be doing well, I used to buy them from an online supermarket for ages before I realised who was behind Laverstoke Park. They do a good Mozzerella.

I'm glad to see drivers feel able to have a life outside F1. In a world which increasingly views sacrifice not only as a virtue, but a necessity to succeed in life, it is heartening to see those who have achieved success acknowledge that there is more to life than work.

If you listen to the Beyond the grid podcast featuring Vettel, he was very impressed with Jody. I got the impression that he views him as a kind of mentor in the farming industry.

Well, good for him I suppose, but I can't help but be reminded of those "Pointless Press Release(s) of the Week" on Midweek Motorsport...    

Vettel comes across as one of those drivers who has healthy interests outside of F1...and who will probably be able to settle into retirement from F1 without feeling the need for a comeback or to race touring cars in his 50s. He's a known fan of Monty Python and of The Beatles, and now he's learned about organic farming. There are a number of interesting facets to Seb. Maybe in the distant future when Seb does retire from active duty, he'll consider joining Jody who will likely be ready to retire from the farming business himself.

I don't think it's pointless. It's good to know that these guys aren't all racing, sports nutrition and training. Lewis has his activism and music. Seb can now add farming and gardening to his interests. Some of the drivers come across as more one-dimensional. Seb, whatever his troubles on the track, isn't one dimensional. One of the guys on the grid I'd like a pint with.

SV used to come across as obsessed with F1 - he studied the history, he knew all the trivia...

Fans: Yay! the WDC is one of us.... He truly loves F1 with all his heart!

SV now seems to have fallen out of love with F1 and expresses a desire to move on to a productive and happy life after he hangs up his racing gloves.

Same Fans: Yay!  He truly loves F1, but not with all his heart.... What a mature and well balance chap.

I think whatever SV says or does, the vast majority of us will approve of it - as he seems a genuine and very nice guy ... when he is not driving.

I think that is where he'll be heading after retiring from F1. I will refrain from jokes indicating that he has already started to adjust his speed to that of farming vehicles.

Interestingly, Jody Scheckter actually made most of his money as a manufacturer of security products I believe, before the organic farming bit.

He does a really nice Salice Salentino in the £5-10 price bracket.

Good on him. Vettel seems to be really likeable outside the track. On track while he was an amazing driver he tended to get in to controversial situations.

He could have invested the time in spatial awareness training.

Never really liked Seb in his youth - Red Bull - Index finger etc BUT I have grown to like him very much over the past few years.  He is a very intelligent man, very private. Apart from Organic farming (good for him) he likes Monty Python and the history of our sport so that makes him OK in my book

By the way Riccardo Patrese was, and presumably still is, passionate about Model Railways

I think Jody Sheckter had a firearms training company in the USA, and made more money than he ever made racing. He deliberately wanted to move to an area where he wasn't going to be recognised and into a sphere where people weren't going to know who he was. Years later when he came back to the UK he did attend a couple of classic F1 events, even sat in the 1977 Wolf and said he could feel the burning desire to race coming back...so he stepped away again. Strong man. 

I guess Paolo Barilla ended up running the family Pasta empire but it wasn't necessarily his big interest.

Slim Borgudd is an interesting fellow. He was mostly a jazz drummer and at some point did some work with Bjorn of ABBA in a folk group. Bjorn later hired him to do session work for some ABBA tracks. Slim has stated that the drum parts he played were all so similar and basic that he has no idea if he played on any ABBA hits or not. I don't think he turned to racing until he was well into his late twenties and established as a drummer. He was a pretty handy racing driver too, scored a point in his brief F1 career (on very unfancied Avon tyres if memory serves) and was still racing touring cars into his 50s. Really he had two careers, it's difficult to see either one as a hobby.

Love reading about stuff like this, and think F1 could do more to show the human side of the drivers. The FIS does this really well ... I particularly enjoyed finding out that the current women's slalom champ plays the harp, and a former women's downhill Olympic gold medalist is a fighter pilot in the Swiss air force. Btw, Farmer Seb has a nice ring to it.

This and the fact he loves old school British comedy are why I will always like Vettel - irrespective of F1.

I remember him saying he was into organic farming in the Beyond the Grid podcast, don't quite remember when was his appearance but it might've been already before the pandemic.

Sebastian Vettel was in attendance at the #BioBienenApfel​ event on 7th April 2021 as an ambassador to help stabalize the bee population and increase it naturally. This clip is just a small section of the live stream where Seb shows us how a bee pollinates a flower(?).
