Sorry for the delay! The 2021 Silly Season Trophy ended more than a month ago, when the lights went out at the Bahrain Grand Prix. We can congratulate M2000-5 for his first victory in this game!

2003: Brian O Flaherty
2004: Flying Panda
2005: lukywill, Viceroy, Makarias
2017: ANF
2018: Marklar
2019: TurnOffTheLights
2020: rodlamas
2021: M2000-5

M2000-5 was the last one to submit a prediction, but it didn't mean he benefited from a shocking last-minute announcement. Some of his choices included picking an unknown driver (i.e., Tsunoda) at AlphaTauri (one of four players to do so), predicting Schumacher's move to F1 (as did eight other players), and Räikkönen staying at Alfa Romeo (together with five other players).

With 12 exact picks out of 20, Grayson was the marksman of this competition. Last year, two players had 14 exact picks, so this season was a bit less predictable. Last year, the players scored between 78 and 97 points, and that also decreased to 70–89. The difference between the best and worst players seems to stay roughly the same throughout the years.

Here are the full results:

Place Name Points Exact Subm
  1 M2000-5 89.07 11 15
  2 Grayson 88.07 12 11
  3 DutchQuicksilver 85.57 11 10
      AVERAGE PICK 85.36 11
  4 f1paul 85.36 10 3
  5 Marklar 84.07 10 4
  6 GTA 83.00 11 6
  7 Starchild 82.93 11 9
  8 noikeee 76.64 9 14
  9 Brawn BGP 001 76.29 9 5
 10 Makarias 75.57 9 12
 11 KWSN - DSM 74.00 8 13
 12 rodlamas 73.21 9 2
 13 SpaceHorseParty 72.71 9 1
 14 scheivlak 72.36 8 7
 15 Costaz 70.79 8 8

As is typical, the average pick does quite well. This time, it's just behind the podium, beating 12 out of 15 players. It scores just as many points as f1paul, though it has one more exact pick. f1paul picked Räikkönen for Alfa Romeo and an unknown driver (Mazepin) for Haas. The average pick has Bottas at Mercedes, Russell at Williams, and Norris at McLaren.

Some statistics on the 2021 drivers:

Name Team Total	In team	Most popular team
Fernando Alonso Alpine 1 0	McLaren (1)
Valtteri Bottas Mercedes	13	10	Mercedes (10)
Pierre Gasly AlphaTauri	12 7	AlphaTauri (7)
Antonio Giovinazzi	Alfa Romeo	12 9	Alfa Romeo (9)
Lewis Hamilton Mercedes	15	14	Mercedes (14)
Nicholas Latifi Williams	14	14	Williams (14)
Charles Leclerc Ferrari 15	15	Ferrari (15)
Nikita Mazepin Haas 0 0	n/a
Lando Norris McLaren 14	13	McLaren (13)
Esteban Ocon Alpine 15	14	Alpine (14)
Sergio Pérez Red Bull	15 0	Aston Martin (15)
Kimi Räikkönen Alfa Romeo 6 6	Alfa Romeo (6)
Daniel Ricciardo	McLaren 15 0	Alpine (9)

Yuki Tsunoda AlphaTauri 0 0	n/a
Max Verstappen Red Bull	15	14	Red Bull (14)
Sebastian Vettel	Aston Martin	10 0	Ferrari (5)

The most popular driver not on the 2021 grid is Kevin Magnussen, who was picked by every single player. Everyone expected him to stay at Haas. Albon was picked by 14 out of 15 players, and KWSN - DSM was the only one who predicted his misfortune. Unsurprisingly, everyone else placed him at Red Bull (11 players) or AlphaTauri (3 players). The third most popular driver not on the grid is Jüri Vips, who 9 players expected would join AlphaTauri.

So, congratulations to M2000-5! I will soon start publishing the interim results of the 2022 Silly Season Trophy – will he be the first player to defend his title?
