US Barber series results?

Are any reasonably comprehensive Barber series race results - Barber-Saab, Barber-Dodge etc - posted in detail anywhere on the internet?

Rick Roso, formerly the PR guy at Lime Rock, was the PR guy for the Barber series for a long time. Perhaps he can help. I suspect that you can still get a line on him through Lime Rock.

That's a good shout actually. Ask him what happened to all the results and data internally once the Skip Barber Racing School changed hands(I think more than once over the past decade?). That archive must be...somewhere. 

I am sure there used to be fairly comprehensive results on the web, but there's still a fair amount of detail via WikiMili, WayBack Machine, etc.  Am I dreaming, but didn't the annual IMSA Review show Barber series results?

What are you looking for, Doug? I have reasonably complete results for most races 1986 to 2000. That is, some very detailed and complete, some less so, but overall it's close to 3,000 data base lines of what amounts to 180 races.

Now that I've sent Doug my file, maybe this is as good a place as any to try and improve on my data. I have the winners of all 180 races from 1986 to 2000, but ideally I'd want at least the top six finishers, along with the race distance and winner's time for every one of the 180. Phew, more than I thought! I have AUTOSPORT from 1995 onwards, and they had the top ten for most races, so I'm hoping someone whose collection goes a bit farther backwards can step in here!

Digging my teeth into it, I trimmed the list in my last post but I'm still missing many results - race distances and finishing times are not the priority at the moment, although it would be nice to have them, too. Anyway, as already stated, AUTOSPORT magazine often printed the top ten in the issues I have from 1995 onwards, so I'm hoping they did the same up to 1994 as well, and maybe it would be possible for a kind soul to dig them out and forward the info?

Great lead thank you.  I should confess that my minor personal problem is the need for contemporary race numbers to ID photography from these races.

What are you looking for, Doug? I have reasonably complete results for most races 1986 to 2000. That is, some very detailed and complete, some less so, but overall it's close to 3,000 data base lines of what amounts to 180 races.

 

Do that include results from the 1987 season, from which I have finally transcibed the results from the appropriate IMSA yearbook. If so I won't bother about posting them here (unless requested). But going through the results I have questions and remarks about the 1987 season - the second year of the series.

 

The races had 16 to 26 starters in each race among 72 drivers over the 12 race series - only four drivers started every race. For an entry level single seater series it seems ambitious to span just about every single corner of the USA with a one make car - but I believe that at the time you could aquire a Saab across the entire nation!

I have noticed a similar pattern of many drivers with limited race starts in SCCA Trans-Am sedan series in the early years, but at a time where cars were eligble in regional SCCA races.

 

Were the cars eligble in libra races?

Were the cars owned by Barber SAAB or independant entries?

I think for the entirety the cars were run by the series, it was a turn-key operation. There'd be a mechanic(s) and an engineer for a group of cars/drivers. I want to say 4-6? It was a pretty simple series, sort of like a finishing school or exam rather than a curriculum, if that makes sense?

 

Doug if you're particularly stuck, or have a low volume to ID, maybe photos would help as some of the helmet designs might jog some niche memories? Though you may have moved beyond that point by now...

It makes sence because other series post-period-present operate in the same way. That might also explains different entrant names for certain drivers during the season and even different starting numbers.

 

But do that also imply that the driver and or sponsor payed for an entry for each race?

On another note I notice that Italian Giuseppe Cipriani, noted as of New York, NY, in round one - later Venize, Italy - was a regular during the season. That same year he partnered Walter Voulaz in the FIA World Touring Car Championship in an Albatech Alfa Romeo 75 Turbo Evo. Actually the pairing ended up "winning" the opening round of the series at Monza!

By 1987 a race win was worth 6000 USD, 4000 to second, 3000 to third, then 1800 to fourth and from there degrading by a 100 dollars down to 14th ending on 700 USD. 15th through to 20th received 700 USD. Below that it was 600 USD.

In 1997? Probably, that was the last year of the tube-frame car. After that it was a carbon Reynard so may have cost a little more, but not dramatically. I think it was like a 125-150k a year series? Maybe even less? You couldn't spend extra on testing or anything.

I hope you don't mind me joining in on this discussion (albeit a little bit late), particularly as I'm a new member (first post).

 

While I don't have the results for each race from 1987 (although that may have been taken care of), I have constructed/collated a points table spreadsheet, if that helps in any shape or form for Michael. I did have the official press releases with their points table issued at the time, but without wishing to be swamped with paperwork, I didn't keep them   .

 

On this subject, I don't have any results/points table for the 1989 season (the only year, I appear to have no data), If someone can provide the appropriate data to construct a points table to complete my records, I would be really grateful.

1987 is the only year I have results like what I posted earlier, and I'm not shure if non-starters are missing from the 1987 IMSA book. The only other source I have are from Autosport.

 

Last night I discovered something that looked like it's possible to copy and paste a spread sheat to these pages, but never got around to trying it, but I'll have a look later today.

I have a very few non-starters in my records, and I believe there were generally none, unless someone wrecked in practice and was unable to afford the repairs. Remember, all the cars were prepared by SBRS, and it wouldn't have looked good if a driver missed a race because of mechanical problems. In fact, all but a very few race retirements were because of accidents - those cars were pretty simple and rugged, and unless you abused them they ran like clockwork. Also, there were apparently no minimum requirements to start a race, and even drivers who were several seconds off the pace were allowed to start - SBRS were happy to take the money, after all!

 

Thanks to all the posts in this thread, I have now been able to complete my initial task of finding the top six finishers for each race - Allen's scan of the On Track report from Lime Rock was the final clincher, which allowed me to reconstruct three other races from points standings... just! Thanks to all those who have posted, and I will come back with a couple of overall statistics. Now that my initial task is fulfilled, I have come so close to complete results for all races that I will not stop here, of course, so if anyone has something to add, feel free to post away....
