Also, does it still sting if it gets in people’s eyes? It’s fun to me as a keen armchair guesser of driver psychology to see who sprays it directly to the eyes of their rivals under the guise of jollity.

So will the "Champaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagne" that is shouted after the presentations now be "Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarkling wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine"?

I love the bollocks they make Domenicali say as to why F1 picked the new champagne, when the actual answer is of course “they offered the highest to give us free booze!”

It's not like it hasn't happened before - they used Chandon sparkling wine a few years back before the Carbon champagne deal

There is zero reason for FIA to be involved in the spraying of wine, lemonade or Champagne. It lost it's luster the second it became regulated, and was already then over rated and over used.

All are sparkling wines though, as I said. Champagne is just a french version of the kind.
Same for Cava from Catalonia, Asti and Prosecco for Italy, Espumante from Portugal, and so on

Champagne and Cava are purely made through 'méthode champenoise', this is, the second fermentation takes place inside the bottles, whereas that's compulsory in the case of Asti or Prosecco: it can be refermented in external tanks of stainless steel. IDK the case of the Portuguese Espumante. The quality and delicacy is not as good in a massive stainless steel tank as it is inside every single bottle.

Not to speak about the surgical level of care applied to the vineyards of the Champagne area, for which the vignerons obtain extraordinarily high prices from the 'Maisons de Champagne'. Legend makes it that any Champagne winegrower worth his salt takes his grapes to the winery in a Ferrari or a Maserati (although I'm not sure that's 100% real, Ferraris or Maseratis don't make great delivery vans).

Certain geographical indications such as champagne have monopoly rights on the use of the name where the products quality or reputation is due to its geography.

Asking to choose between sparkling wine and champagne is essentially the same as asking whether you would like to have "a car" or "a car engineered in Germany".

Nope, it's not the same. A car can be equally well engineered in Germany or anywhere else, even if Germany is a country of great engineering tradition. But you can train engineers (or take them from Germany, if you like), or build auxiliary companies and put them at work where ever you want. However, a wine is the produce of a soil and a climate ('terroir') which only exist in one place. It can be similar in other places, but never the same.

I went to the Chandon winery in Australia for a day out - if I recall correctly are the same company, just the Moet & Chandon brand is the one based in the champagne region in france. 

If you see a bottle of Chandon (without the Moet), its not champagne.

Sure, I know there are differences in production, quality and so on... but still, its all fundamentally sparkling wine.

And I agree that french champagne is overpriced, if you meant that.

We could call champagne "high quality sparkling wine" and not just "sparlking wine" if that makes them happy...

Any French member will be about ready to show you to Mme Guillotine. Having sampled American "champagne" on a few occasions I cannot say I blame them.

Back when the Spanish Grand Prix was held at Jerez it was sponsored by Tio Pepe sherry and they got bottles of sherry on the podium instead of champagne. Of course in recent years we've had rose water in Muslim countries.

Not really a topic that really interests me too much. Bigger things to worry about current f1 than whatever they spray champagne or sparkling wine on the podium. For majority of recent years I have already turned the broadcast off before podium anyways.

This makes the schooey a bit more disgusting (no alcohol to kill things)
