Goodwood Revival 2021

No F1? Don’t worry about it, we’re about to go to Goodwood for the revival 2021.

The weather looks set fair for the weekend so there should be some cracking racing on Saturday and Sunday.  Most of Friday is taken up with practice for the various categories with the first race, the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy due off at 18:20 featuring the Brundles in an E type. What a field that promises to be!

Such an amazing event, really hope I can visit it next year! There's just so much emotion in how these classics drive.

At the risk of being slaughtered, I have to say that I'm not a great fan of the Goodwood Revival format.

Come on, it's fake racing. Ok, maybe one driver or two may provide some kind of action, but most of it is uninteresting. Also the difference of performance among cars and drivers in the same race can be outlandish. I remember some cars being lapped every three laps.

There are, certainly, some nice cars, but a prefer a show like the Festival of Speed. Also, the pastiche 1960s style annoys me.

It is a recreation of racing in the 'good old days', so slow cars being lapped frequently is entriely accurate.

As for 'fake racing', I am a bit stunned.  Goodwood probably sees more driver on or slightly over the limit than most race meetings.  Stand at Madgwick and watch car after car drifting through the corner and lurching into oversteer over the mid-corner bump.  Why?  Because they are pushing hard.  No tyre management involved, just pedal to the metal, like the Good Lord* intended.

Not so at the Revival - I went there four times for all three days each time.  Some drivers were slow, but there were some fantastic drives.

Was it 2002 when the Freddie March Memorial Trophy ran through to dusk as a 9 Hours tribute?  I recall Desire Wilson doing fantastic things with a C-type.

We are going on Sunday in period dress which Mrs Tennis is very excited about. My dad is working there too, plus we all have paddock passes thanks to a friend, so I'm very, very much looking forward to seeing all the cars up close.

I suspect that may have been Freddie March's (now the Duke of course) master stroke, giving the ladies an excuse to dress up.  So now they WANT to go instead of being dragged along less than willingly.  And hence the explosion of support for a historic race meeting, compared to the paucity of crowds at other such events.  Also Goodwood is a wonderful venue and all the sideshows make for very full experience.

Just don't go onto the Nostalgia Forum and mention period dress.  There are many there who get very negative about it.  Which is odd, given that it is a Nostalgia Forum...

Aside from the posts here already. But Goodwood tends to be all out racing.

Also, Monaco Historic had some great ones this year.

The Owlet is back! I love that thing. Patrick Blakeney-Edwards drives it with such verve that initially it doesn't look real.

You gave up too quick Rod, they gave time back. Thoroughly enjoyed that despite the prolonged safety car. A couple of the E's particularly the Stanley/Cottingham car handled like modern GT's.

First race tomorrow 9.45

Those track marshalls need sending to F1 to show them how to do it.

Brundle's 'engine failure' looked more like a blown oil-pipe to me: he was still pushing the car for some distance after the oil smoke appeared, so presumably the engine was still running well at that point...
