This is another of those "I should know this," things, but I don't. More annoyingly, I can't seem to find the answer in any of the obvious places, and it should be easy.

I have seen a video clip of a helmetless Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell ascending the Goodwood hill in the 1975 Le Mans-winning Mirage GR8, with an accompanying interview with Lord March describing the efforts he'd made to attract Ickx to the event. He says this was Jacky's first appearance at the Festival.

I have shots of Ickx at Goodwood in 1999 in a Ferrari 512M, so if Lord March's comments are correct, this film predates that appearance. Please can anyone confirm what year the filmed Mirage demonstration took place, and - better still - does anyone have a decent photograph they could be willing to licence for the upcoming book?

Thanks again in anticipation of your help.

Thanks for this - most helpful. Now to establish whether Jacky did actually demonstrate the Ferrari 512M in 1999 as well as 2000, as one source suggests!

And the plea for a decent shot of the GR8 ascent in 1999 remains if anyone can help.

Our Ed McDonough may be able to help with that Jon. He wrote about the Gulf-Mirage for Veloce.

The book Goodwood Festival of Speed says that at the 1999 FoS, Jacky Ickx drove Ferrari 512M and 312PB and a Porsche 936/77.  It only lists Derek Bell as driver of the GR8; there is a photograph of him, helmeted, in the car. The caption says that the drivers, Ickx, Bell, Jaussaud and Schuppan were reunited with the car.

The 1999 FoS programme has a 2 page Ickx feature by DC Nye.

It opens with "Right from our first Festival of Speed in 1993, six-times Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx has been on our 'wants' list of great drivers."

In the entry lists section confirms what Roger states above. It has the Mirage Ford GR8 as car 211 and listed as a demo with Derek Bell.

Jacky is listed with car 154 Ferrari 512M ch 1034 and 156 Ferrari 312PB ch 0892, both shared with Uwe Meissner as demos. Then the car 4 Porsche 936/77 demo.

I take it the Ickx book will also cover the 1977 Bathurst 1000 visit where Jacky was famously part of the Moffat Ford 1-2 that year. The way it was played out at the time it was huge publicity and remains so in telecasts as recent as last weekend's Bathurst when hightlights packages get a run.

Hi Stephen

That's great clarification, thank you. The photos I have for the Ferrari 512M / 312PB that are badged up as 1999 square up with your comments, as Ickx is wearing his familiar "Modena Motorsport" overalls (in 2000 he's in white). I know he was billed to drive the Porsche 936/77 in 1999 but the DCN article is the first time I have seen it confirmed he actually did, as I have never found a photo of him in the Porsche from that year (he's driven it at Goodwood on several subsequent occasions). So if anyone has a shot that proves it I would love to see it!

Thanks for the suggestions from other TNFers as to who might have a clean shot of Ickx and Bell in the GR8 (the contemporary video footage is quite fuzzy!) - fingers crossed one of these comes through.

And yes, there is a full report of Bathurst in the new book (1977 and 1978) with suitable accompanying photos  :) . The 1977 James Hardie 1000 was an important race in a highly eclectic career.

Kind regards.

Jon
