Kimi Raikkonen: Migration of fans

The end of Kimi Raikkonen's long career means one of F1 biggest and more experienced fan base is  going to be "orphan". So for you all Kimi fellow fans who is going to be your number one driver from now on? It's Verstappen for me (although I enjoy Vettel, Gio and even get a weak spot for Bottas, Norris, Ricciardo). 

One thing is sure: I will never ever suffer for any other driver as I did with Kimi. He's always going to be another level. These two last GP's showed me that.

Mazepin.

Charles Leclerc. He's the most similar to Kimi in a way that he is sensible and he's owning to his mistakes more often then not. Speed wise, I'm still not quite sure he is there.

@ trust: Leclerc is the fastest over one lap aside Max and Lewis. He's a brilliant racing driver. I just happen not to like his passive agressive personality.

Good for you.  'Fan' is short for 'fanatic'.  'Enthusiast' sounds much more sensible.

I don’t really support a particular driver anymore. When I was a bit younger, I’d support Fisichella (and generally drivers who weren’t at the front) as it made it even sweeter when they did get success. When Fisi left Australia in 05 as championship leader it felt like a dream. Same when he got the Ferrari drive. To me, that was far more rewarding than seeing a driver rack up the wins. As a Brit, I was always gunning for Lewis, but then when he moved to Merc and started winning everything it put me off.

I don’t know how many people are the same, but I just follow the sport now. I want F1 to be exciting, whoever wins. I want personalities in F1, so I do like drivers such as Ricciardo, but I wouldn’t say I ‘support’ them.

Yeah me too. From now on i'll just be an enthusiast. I prefer Max for pure performance reasons. He's the best. His personality is normal, not that interesting. Giovinazzi and Norris are more fun and great guys so I like them. Gio is out so Lando takes the spot for innocent good bloke with talent. Overall i think I'll aprecciate them all except Alonso, Leclerc, Stroll.

In his first pause I was lucky to have MSC there. He and Kimi are my two all time favourites in f1.

Now I will continue more as a fan of the sport and Ferrari than before.

From drivers I like Bottas, Sainz and Mick.

I always find it interesting how quickly some fans migrate after their favourite driver retires. I didn't support anyone for 2 years after Button retired. I enjoyed the sport without supporting anyone, but I did continue following McLaren. I started to support McLaren in 2019 because they became a likeable team, had likeable drivers and were the last team of Button. I can imagine supporting Alfa Romeo would be tough

I am the same with you. I loved Trulli when I started F1, then Fisi, Montoya etc. When Alonso started dominating I rooted Hamilton to win. When Hamilton started dominating, I loved drivers like Kimi and Ricciardo.

Now Kimi is leaving I would migrate to Alonso

No one. It will be nice not to worry about how he'll mess up his races/qualy again. So in a way it'll be more enjoyable.

Max reminds me a little bit of young McLaren Kimi (although the former could use some of the latter's coolness in some situations). So maybe Max but in general just enjoying the races again after 20 years of anxiousness, enough already, first grey hair is visible!!

This is basicaly it. Not worry anymore is the best thing of Kimi rettiring. Just watch the race with normal heart rate is great (had a good taste of it the last two races). Sure i prefer Max to Hamiton or Leclerc but even if they win no calms. My compromise towards Max is way lower. 

Valtteri for patriotic reasons. Alonso for nostalgic reasons.

Wish there were more teams. That would mean more new drivers each year, and maybe new favorites.

Lando is the man, and Lewis of course, both mans are of McLaren family   

Right so the OPS take on Raikkonen fans is roughly in line with this...

Vettel is my 2nd favourite driver and then Alonso but I doubt either of them will ever compete at the front again. 

I think Leclerc will be the guy to beat in the future if he becomes less mistake prone so I reckon I will support him in the future when he's in a title battle. I doubt I'll ever support a driver like I did with Kimi though!

At this point I'm supporting half of the grid anyway.

I didn't like anyone enough to support in 11/12, and still don't know who I'll support from now on. I like Max's driving, but not so much some of his attitudes. I also like Gasly and how I feel he's flying under the radar. And of course, I always supported Ferrari. In 6 months I may answer this more clearly.

I voted for Ricci, but is quite difficult to say.

Other thing are the best drivers in cold analysis: Max, Lewis, Nando, George, maybe Charles...

And another different thing, the drivers that you support because a complicated mix of sympathy (Ricci) feelings (Lando, Charles) cultural o geographical proximity (Carlos, Nando, Sergio) or pure undecipherable charisma (Kimi by miles)

And for some strange reason the case of Kimi is for study. In terms of charisma among the fans, Kimi would had made run for their money Michael, Ayrton or Gilles.

Nannini -> Hakkinen -> Raikkonen -> ?

I've been rooting for Nannini these past seasons, but I don't think he'll make it. Also Pourchaire, and he will make it.

Oh, and Colton Herta, for some strange reason I've convinced myself that he is the real deal.

Stroll, because he's not on the list.

I have found myself turning towards the Indycar drivers as well. The Merc dominance made me almost stop watching F1, not because of HAM, simply because it was so predictable and for years it was only max 3 drivers in the game. In Indycar, the drivers matter much more.

Maybe Kimi follow Grosjean and they become team mates again?

Put me in the camp that's not a fan of any driver or team. (I was a driver fan once, but that was before it was time to start shaving). 

This is one of the the most complex, well resourced and competitive sports in the world. In its technology, strategies and driver strengths and weaknesses. There's the fascination for me. 

And to round it all off, there's the wonderful, rich history.

As Ernest Hemingway put it: “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.”

All 20 of them, plus another hundred or so who are either scrabbling to get in or scrabbling around having been edged out.

I never liked Raikkonen, nor his persona, nor the sycophantic nature of his fans. One of the most over-rated drivers ever to grace the F1 grid, and won't be missed from my perspective when he departs. Raikkonen was a shadow of his average self when he joined Ferrari for the 2nd time, thrashed by an average Vettel and a complete waste of time in the Alfa. Raikkonen's decline was depressingly visible, and obvious, where Alonso, and Hamilton have maintained their speed. Raikkonen lost his much vaunted speed at least 5 years ago, and that's being kind.

As a fairly neutral fan regarding Kimi, my "other" vote is to see what everyone else is voting. Just for the record.
