Fordingbridge Hillclimb - May 1946

As a part of some research which I am carrying out into a particular car’s history, I am looking for information relating to the hillclimb held on 12th May 1946 at Cockley Hill, Fordingbridge, which was organised by Southampton Motor Club.

 

There is quite a comprehensive report in June 1946 Motor Sport.

However I am looking for additional sources/reports, or even a programme with entry list.

In answer to the OP - I found Southampton Central Library's Local Studies librarians to be very helpful when I emailed them with a specific query. Chances are this event would have been covered in the Southampton Evening Echo.

Julian Hunt in Motorsport Explorer gives these directions:

East from Fordingbridge, the B3078 runs toward Cadnam up on to the open land of Godshill Ridge. About a mile (1.6km) east of Godshill, there is an unmade road on the right winding up on Cockley Hill that was used for these events. [OS grid square] SU 1915

The hill was 590yd (539m) of winding loose-covered gravel set among trees, the route over the Downs to an RAF site, which at the time contained quantities of unused, unexploded bombs.

He notes that there were two events there, the first being in May 1946 as mentioned above. The second was in May 1947, when Leslie Allard set BTD in the special sports Allard (HLF 601) with 28.6 sec.

Note also that the dirt track leads off Roger Penny Way, not far from the Fighting Cocks pub in Godshill. Fnar.
