Similarly as last year: Practice (max 1 point), qualifying (max 3 points), race (max 6 points). Practice mainly done to knock off points if something notable happens which wasn't a case in Bahrain.

grades2201.png

For sprint race weekends I'm using 2 points for practice+qualifying, 2 points for sprint and 6 points for race.

I think Jolyon Palmer as Race Director would be an inspired choice.  Great graphic, as well!!

LEC - 10.0 : fast, clever, clean

SAI - 7.0 : just missing that last 2% of talent

HAM - 9 : nothing more he could do

RUS - 6: needs to pick up the pace fast, was nowhere near hamilton

MAG - 9.5 : amazing comeback, showed that pay drivers always cost more then they deliver

BOT - 6.5 : typical bottas race, fast but clumpsy

TSU - 7.0 : not bad, but too slow

ZHU - 7.5 : good for a first race, hope he finds real raw pace

VER - 9 : Max is never slow and always gives it his all

PER - 7.0 : qualy was not bad, needs a few more tenths in the race

RIC - 6.0 : gonna be a long season, i see no improvement compared to last year

MSC - 5.0 : still no glimpse of brilliance

STR - 4.0 : drives like a pay driver

ALO - 6.5 : a 6 but .5 extra because i like him

GAS - 7.5 : got everything out of the car

HUL - 8.0 : without trainig faster then stroll

NOR - 7.0 : he deserves a better car

LAT - 3.0 : slow

OCO - 6.5 : he doest have the gear but feel he is underperforming

ALB - 6.5 : was ok, faster the his teammate , which i expected

****:  explanation of high Zhou rating:

Zhou had no DRS in qualy and saw his best time deleted because of track limits: that time was just half a second of Botta's time but with no DRS! In the race his lap times were identical to Bottas, lost 7th place because his team pitted him at the same time as Bottas and he had to wait after Valtteri's car.

This was one of the most impressive debuts in years. Alfa Romeo messed up their strategy numerous times last year. They now did it again and this time it cost Zhou a 7th place, he was running right behind Bottas who finished  6th before his final stop.

Few people seem to have realised how strong Zhou's race was. I suggest that they have a look at the lap chart from the race and have a look at all lap times, they will be surprised.

*** On Alonso: his race pace was considerably slower as Ocon's pace hence the difference in their rating.

**  Hülkenberg still gets a 5 because he beat Stroll in qualy. His race was terrible though but in his defence: he hasn't been racing for a while.
* Mick needs to raise his game: he was a full second per lap slower as Magnussen and both Alfa Romeo's.

Very interesting analysis regarding Zhou. I thought he had a great race considering it was his debut, but i never looked into the above which makes it even more impressive if true..

Why such harsh score on Russell? He kept up with Lewis during the race quite well, given the skepticism on his race pace since the dawn of time. Sure, he had a poor qualifying, but he recovered from there.

That's exactly why. He qualified 1 second off Lewis, not exactly a small gap. Then he finished behind him and Lewis took a podium.

I much prefer these member ratings to those of the media. I wonder however, how anybody can make a fair assessment of a driver's performance if he is not the recipient of significant screen time. Furthermore is the driver of a top car scoring a podium really doing a better job, than someone who takes a Haas or Williams (last year) to 15th.

Better to share these before next race.

grades2202.png

No grade for Tsunoda who had qualifying and race destroyed due to circumstances beyond his control.

I know Schumacher didn't participate the race but based on the method I do these ratings 3/6 points for race is a fair one for a driver who doesn't do anything good or bad during it.

What did Verstappen do to deserve a 8 this weekend?

Beat his teammate, front row and swapping fastest laps with Leclerc before a DNF that was zero procent the drivers doing. I mean if he had the fastest car that would have been bad but normally a second place behind the fastest car in very capable hands is good.

Why punish a driver with a lower rating when he did extract everything his car was capable off and atleast took a shot to fight for for the win.

Gasly and Bottas also extracted everything from their cars in qualifying and the race but only got a 7. Max had no chance of winning the race today as he was always a few secends behind Leclerc. Max getting a 8 isn't the biggest problem of those ratings. Hamilton somehow got a higher rating than Russell...

Gasly and Bottas probably deserved a higher rating but I think their qualifying performance was lower than previous races so maybe they where not rewarded full points for that.

Lewis actually was the better driver of the 2, Russell did good but he was beaten in Qualifying and got a free pitstop as the only reason he was in front of Lewis. Giving Russell a higher rating would have been unfair to Lewis. That said luck should account for a bit and equal rating would have been fair as there was very little between them.

Interesting to see Hamilton ahead of Russell. Though I've not done ratings since like September last year because I've not had the time to analyze the races much. Think Hamilton should have gotten 5 at Imola though. Finished like 14th while Russell was 4th.

Also nice to see your ranking putting Alonso ahead of Ocon, though I would have given him 8 at Australia where he was very unlucky.

A shame you had to stop doing ratings, always thought they were high quality.

The scores you point out were ones that I remember struggling with. Surely I don't have to explain to you that it's not easy sometimes.

I can imagine an average of a couple people's ratings might be more accurate.

Well maybe I will return if I have time because I feel like I should have finished last year.

And yeah, I was probably nitpicking about those 2 scores.

Anyways, here are my ratings for British GP: ( struggled a lot with the drivers at back )

Sainz 7

Perez 7.5

Hamilton 9

Leclerc 8

Alonso 8

Norris 8

Verstappen 8.5

Schumacher 7.5

Vettel 7.5

Magnussen 7

Stroll 6

Latifi 7

Ricciardo 5 ( apparently had DRS issues, otherwise would have given him 4 )

Tsunoda 4

Ocon 6

Gasly 6

Bottas 6

Russell 5

Zhou 5

Albon 6

Trying to understand the rating.
Perez qualified 2 tenths behind Max, had a penalty for engine so starts 9th, drove most race with damage and was as fast as Max almost in the last stint - yet he gets a 6?
His fastest lap was 0.02 off Max

He lost out to Leclerc who started 4 spots behind him. Yes, Leclerc lucked into the SC stop, but still Perez was passed on track by him.

Perez was 9s behind at the last stop and 8.2 at the finish. You would ignore the 9s slower stop for Verstappen then.
