A very , very old design brought up to date

Amazing what modern materials and turbo's can do, the cam position sensor clamp on is quite neat

toyota land-cruiser The F series of engines were deliberately engineered to be similar to GMC L6 OHV 235 engines but improved upon its inspiration to suit the FJ’s needs.

a buddy had one set up for MUD as the everglades has a lot

he had the toy/chevy 6 motor with lots of hotrod parts made for chevys

suspect they are a prime customer for that type of motor

I did part of my hot rodding days pretty heavy into a 235 cubic inch Chev engine.  After a brief period in 1940 fFord 2 door sedan followed by a 1940 coupe both heavily breathed on in the HP stakes and even more heavily modified in the handling stakes I moved onto two Chevs sharing the same 235 that had been set up for full pressure oiling.

The first was a 1939 coupe set up with 3 carbs, a split header system, a head that was heavily mofified for chamber shape, porting and about 6 thou off the face.  That was then followed by multi cam shaft changes via Howard, Winfield and Isky grinds searching for the ultimate.  The apogee of that setup was when I took a season class championship at the Granatelli Brother's sponsored drag strip at Half Day Illinois.  I believe that was about the 3rd or 4th strip nationally and the first outside of California.

Not surprisingly I high speed crashed that car on the road home from Purdue University on holiday.  The engine was too good to leave behind so on recovering from injuries I went back to the junk yard that held the remains  and pulled engine/trans out.  I found a very nice 35 standard Chev coupe to accept the remains which became my daily driver until circa 1955.

In the Chev periods the father of my best friend living around the corner ended up owning a 1953 Blue Flame C1 Corvette, chassis number 6.  Incidentally, chassis 4 was also owned by another nearby neighbor about 4 blocks away.

We used to line the C1 up against my Chev with great regularity and up to about zero to about 80 MPH would pull away, 80 to 90 we would be even and at the top end he would pull away. Obviously I had a HP and gearing advantage and the C1 had a weight and frontal area and aero drag advantage,

About this time I realised that drag racing and road antics were limited only by volumes of money and I turned to sports cars via a 1948 MGTC which was eventually heavily modified and raced.

This was followed by a new Morgan Plus 4 which was raced with great success 45 times followed by a Porsche Speedster and thence to the prototype Lotus 1100 that Chapman had raced in the 1955 LeMans raced and extensively elsewhere in that year,

That launched a 40 year career in sucsesive sports and open wheel cars.

Hot rodding was never far out of the technical mind,

Regards

PS:  The 235 full pressure Chev started life from a 216 splash lube block. :stoned:

What about this modified for a Ford 300 in-line 6? Claimed 600+ hp.

While I believe the bolt pattern is the same the head is quite different on the Toymota than the Chev.

We has a 53 or 54 Chev  6 tonne tipper which had siezed up from a lack of oil. We found a passenger car 235 and installed that. But still splash and dip. And never run heavy oil in them as the damage is done before the oil gets warm enough.

The 252/292 Chevy six was quite a good engine and used so many small block parts.

We did fit the truck pan to it. Actually went quite well though even then, early 70s It was an archaic engine.

Boss?  Hacked up Cleveland heads. A  Boss 302 used closed chamber 4V heads. A lot of work for minimal gain. And would ever only be a drag engine. You would never keep coolant in it. 600+? I doubt it. Undoubtedly would make good power though.

A couple of farmers used these engines in SuperModifieds in the 70s, and probably made 300hp with a lot of torque. one with McGee injection. The only one ever made for a 300. 4" bore, 4" stroke so you did not rev them too hard. 12-1 with 327 Chev lumpy pistons, factory very long rods, stock crank. Regrind cam [no billets then and near certainly not now. The newer one of the 2 with a quick change was quite a quick car, great in heats but boiled in features. Rasping along at probably 5000 rpm. The then builder reckons the injection pump was not good enough,, a problem still 40 years later. A couple of other old cars out there with probably the same issue. Yet there is no shortage of old pumps from Sprintcar engines.

As for destroying V8s,, I have done that with a 202 Holden in Supermods for decades. Can beat all but the best V8s.  Though not 372  Lowbar Sprintcars from the early 80s. 250 hp V 650hp is too much handicap in a well driven car.
