Almost time for the cars to hit the test track, and more than ever there might be scope for special liveries to dazzle and hide the intricacies of the new 2022 cars.

What are the best testing only (or never raced) F1 liveries?

I liked this BAR effort… and the BMW Williams test livery

Redbull have done a few of the ‘distraction’ style liveries based on warship paint jobs?

I like the cases where a last minute sponsorship change or forces a livery change.

I liked Williams' intended Rokit livery for 2020 before Rokit didn't pay up and they parted ways.

I also liked the Jordan 196, pre Benson & Hedges.

Here's one that caught my eye a while ago. Williams FW11 at Rio testing in 1986, with a white nose, giving the car a very different look before they changed it to the more familar livery.

When Redbull first bought Jaguar, I remember thinking it was a total slam-dunk that all their F1 cars would have this livery…

Hardly the best, but I always found this Renault test livery of 2002 strikingly similar to the ill-faited Dome effort only 6 years earlier.

Good find.

Not a strictly livery-related question, but I remember an old Williams documentary, where there was video footage of Nelson Piquet driving the 1985 Williams during the 85/86 winter. Does anyone have a picture of that? I can't recall ever seeing one.

I kinda hope Ferrari will show up during winter testing with a livery like this again and pleasantly surprise us by revealing their true colors during the first race weekend. True colors being proper red and not Marlboro red. Which was exactly the reason why this livery was introduced in 1997 in the first place, to lead the transition from the proper red, last used in 1996, to the Marlboro red that would be used from 1997 onwards.

Dog of a car?   a car that fought for P3, got 3 podiums, was 3rd/4th fastest car in several tacks (with a two years old chassis and engine)?

That's Super Aguri test livery.

Super Aguri did use the A23 as the basis of their first car, but that’s definitely Frentzen testing for Arrows in 2002.

He was part of the Bridgestone test programme. The Ligier and the Arrows were the cars obtained for that purpose.

I’m sure Damon enjoyed the irony of getting to drive Michael’s championship winning Benetton, which is what the JS41 effectively was.

Funnily enough, Schumacher drove the previous-model Ligier JS39B a couple of years earlier in order to sample the Renault engine that Benetton had obtained for the 1995 season.

Now that is stretching it a bit far, isn't it? A striking resemblance, yes. But the way you try to sell it, is just a tad too much. No one will deny the fact that Briatore haggled the Renault engines in the Benetton instead of them being in the back of the Ligier. This in exchange for free Mugens for Ligier and a shared knowledge on chassis design with Benetton for 1995.
But it was by far a proper copy of the Benetton B195. Even further than the Racing Pont RP20 was compared to the Mercedes W10.

It's eternally a shame that this livery never made it on the racing cars. The actual livery is iconic. But this one was better imo.

I remember the original test Force India livery well - I think the ITV F1 guide for the 2008 season had a photograph of it on the team page. I was a bit disappointed when they revealed the final livery, as I think this colour scheme with the darker shade of red was a lot more striking than the livery they actually used.
