Odd to revisit the blue flags after Monaco in the light of Latifi being given a penalty point for ignoring blue flags yesterday in Baku. Also odd, his explanation:

The blue flag [penalty], I understood I took longer than maybe in terms of the marshalling sectors to let him by,” Latifi said. “But I spoke to Pierre after, telling him what I wanted to do and he agreed with what I did.

“I just basically wanted to give him the DRS, because if I let him by a few corners before then he was going to have no DRS and he was going to get penalised from Hamilton catching him through that dirty air up before.

“So I said ‘okay let me at least give him the DRS and try and negate whatever I held him up and he agreed. He said ‘yeah you did the right thing’.”

Obviously not his choice to make under the current regs, and the current regs were introduced to stop drivers deliberately favouring one (parent) team when being lapped.

I think the Williams team needs some kind of competition related sanction now.

Two races in a row that at least one driver has ignored blue flags that cost the following driver enough time to lose a position.

No idea what that would be though, how do you deter the slowest team with any kind sanction that would potentially make their following race any worse?

Latifi kind of saying the quiet part loud about wanting to aid one driver from a different team in his battle with another driver. I think it would have been reasonable to ask him a follow up question here, like ‘why were you trying to help Gasly stay ahead of Hamilton?’

I think Latifi was saying he wanted to compensate Gasly losing time due to being in his dirty air too long (and hence Hamilton closing in) with giving him DRS.

I think better all round to just move out of the way at the first opportunity.

Or, and I know this may sound crazy, he could have just obeyed the blue flags so Gasly didn’t lose time behind him.

Yeah agreed, just trying to understand what Latifi was thinking and I don't think it has anything to do with trying to keep a driver from a certain team ahead of a driver from another team.

This is analagous to Albon's Monaco in one sense. Tail end driver "uses his initiative" because he thinks it will reduce the delay to the overtaking driver. In the course of doing that, he breaks the rules. Doh.

DRS (or whatever else - unless a safety issue) shouldn't be a factor - get out of the way within the mandated amount of blue flags.

I guess Gasly was being held up from T8 and all the way to T20?

Edit: "Car 6 was shown the blue flag on multiple occasions and the blue lights were displayed for 12 panels, between turns 7 and the finish line, prior to car 10 being able to pass."

That's just poor. Perhaps the gap was still big at T7, but Latifi could have got out of the way after T12.

Maybe Latifi needs to concentrate more on his own race rather than thinking about helping others out...he might not be as woefully off the pace then.

Nevertheless, that it is what he said he was looking to achieve. I presume the unsaid bit is, as you said, that he felt unable to get out of the way safely in the allotted time but how plausible is that? This is not a rhetorical question, I’m wondering if the blue flags kicked in at a point where that would make sense.

(I can see we are in agreement that this is not a sensible solution in general.)

He was concentrating on examining Baku Fortress for information for his forthcoming book, "The Walls of F1."

Thanks, ANF  - that’s really illuminating.

The other odd thing about this one is I would think Williams would have reminded the drivers about blue flags after the Albon incident with Leclerc in Monaco.

I'm getting the impression the Williams drivers are seeing blue flags and thinking they are being waved in support of the team and it's blue livery.

If Latifi was merely wanting to compensate Gasly for not letting him by sooner, then I'm not sure giving the double tow to Lewis on the straight was the best idea!  Fortunately, maybe, the Merc was a bit slow in a straightline.  The clear solution is to obey the blue flags and get out of the way.

When Nick Heidfeld got penalty for ignoring blue flags in Barcelona 2003, I remember one guy joking that he confused marshals' blue flags with Asturias flags which were being waved by Alonso's supporters.

Williams gave the victory on a silver plate to Red Bull in Monaco. They weren't punished for stealing Leclerc's win

Baffling. This is not a Racer's mentality.

Imagine the chaos of Latifi being a WEC/IMSA GT driver...

You would think, but they were a bit casual on the grid at the start resulting in a penalty. Maybe they just don't care.

Well being last in the constructor standings and the driver is last in driver standings makes them think what could the Authority do? Can't take the points away from the driver as he does not have any and if they take away the points from the team well they will still be last. :rotfl:

But seriously this situation really warrants FIA's attention because they are getting involve in too many incidents in last few races and pitwall is acting like they are clueless to avoid it.

It's disturbing that LAT says his reason is to help GAS vs HAM.  How can the FIA not look at this and sanction LAT and Williams?

I didn't see this mentioned but the Williams dude looked at his watch (twice, IIRC) prior to touching the car on the grid to push it back a bit.  I think he thought it was still within the window.

Exactly.  I don't think the accusations of Latifi trying show favor to Gasly over Hamilton are correct, but he was wildly overthinking things in his role as the driver being lapped.  He was aware that, given the gaps behind and the current corner when Gasly reached him, he couldn't let both drivers through at once and he felt bad about how the differences in slipstream and DRS would affect their battle and potentially help Hamilton.  So he interjected with his attempt to keep it "fair" by holding both up until they reached a spot more appropriate to his judgement.  Just get out of the way!

Drivers getting shown blue flags should not be thinking about anything other than going out of the way.   Drivers getting DRS or not is the luck of the draw and will balance out over the season. It's not for Latifi to decide...what even

Points deduction, less prize money.

To expand on this, I actually think frontrunner's shouldn't be able to get DRS while lapping other cars.  The blue flags should suffice and heavy penalties should be leveled against offenders.
