Sky says Alonso has been summoned to the stewards for weaving. It looked bad on the skypad

Stuff like this is leaving a sour note in what has otherwise been a rather enjoyable comeback for Fernando.

It’s like Gordon Shedden in the BTCC, applying old race control standards while everyone else has moved on.

Did not enjoy that replay at all. Hope he gets penalized, I’m afraid (sorry).

Yeah, didn't look that great.

Did they say on the radio during the race he had a straightline issue?  Maybe they meant he couldn't drive in a straightline.  :D

Anyway, oddest thing about Alonso's race was the strategy.  Worrying about Hamilton early on, yet I'm not sure how his strategy was meant to assist in that battle (which was a non-event).

Blatant weaving from Fernando. Clear penalty incoming.

Apparently he had an engine issue since lap 20 which cost him a self-claimed 1 sec per lap.

No, I hate weaving like that so although I really like Fernando, I hope they take action to discourage it.

Had he been warned before? Might not be as slam dunk a penalty if it was his only infringement and if he argues there was a car's width on the left.

Will probably get it anyway to seal a disappointing Sunday. I think he has outs, though.

That’s quite bad. Maybe he was having Super Aguri flashbacks from 2007?

The move across that caused Bottas to lift... he had no right to be making that one, so if he does get penalised I'm not sure there can be too many arguments.

I like Alonso and I like Alonso being a little bit cheeky, but this was much more than a little bit and therefore surely a penalty.

Is it worse than other weaving incidents we’ve seen? Don’t quite see the fuss tbh. If you can drive off the circuit and force another driver off without a penalty then I don’t see this as too bad.

Yeah he'll be a very lucky boy to get away with that.

Which naturally means he won't of course.  :cat:

Or:

- That should have been a penalty and has absolutely nothing to do with a discussion on weaving...?

Yes, it's worse. We have seen some weaving of drivers breaking the tow, which imo is a bit of a grey zone. This was weaving forcing another driving to lift.

You don’t see the difference between two drivers claiming the same piece of tarmac at the exit of a corner and weaving on a straight at 300+ km/h?

It's not just weaving to break a distant slipstream but he was pretty much started overtaking and had to lift to avoid contact .

That’s a big if.

Given that generally you can’t drive of the circuit and force another driver off without penalty, I’d say that’s a massive if.

He's talking about Brasil last year. I think the board was pretty much in agreement (apart from a few die-hards) that it should have been a penalty.

And also the rules on leaving room has been changed also this year and it seems to work quite well too... At least I dont remember any obvious cases so far this year.

I don’t see Alonso’s weaving as worse than intentionally driving off the circuit no. I don’t particularly like either, but I find the outrage in the thread a bit over the top. Previous examples of weaving on the straight have been a black and white flag, I don’t see why this one is different.

Weaving like Alonso did here can lead to some hideous accidents. It's right that it is treated seriously.

That wasn't really weaving as he stayed on one side of the track for a couple seconds, then moved, then stayed a couple more seconds and moved again... its like he was making multiple defensive moves when you are only allowed to do one... don't see the break the tow defence working for this one

Well for one, weaving on a straight with car within DRS is far more dangerous. Apples and oranges.

He doesn't seem very happy in F1, doing lots of bitter things lately.

It's really the only get out tbh (If it's usually a warning rather than 1 and done but I can't recall any examples from this year off the top of my head).

I think he might get away with it because the track naturally curves there and the racing line naturally goes from inside to outside, and also Bottas lifted a bit earlier than he absolutely had to - you could argue that Alonso didn't force him to lift.

However, if he gets a penalty I will have no complaints - it will be a win for fair racing (and I say that as an Alonso fan).

Indeed, they are apples and oranges.

When did someone last get punished for weaving on the straight? I only remember black and white flags in recent times.

This is how I see it. I won't argue against the penalty but I don't think it's as slam dunk as it might seem.

Bad comparison. Alonso does it because he had enough...I mean he even admitted to it on numerous occassions after complaining about driving standards (rightly so) for years....he is doing it on purpose because you are the idiot if you are not doing it while everyone else gets away with it.

He absolutely knew what he was doing against Bottas.

Only see it for the first time now: that's pretty bad weaving and should be penalised. Did they actually penalise him?
He still gets my driver of the weekend vote for his qualy performance mainly though.

No and never. But I do hope that with Alonso's antics (also in Baku) some rules get changed. I'm not Dr. Phil, but I think Fernando's mindset is a "if you can't beat them, join them". Not sporting, but I like to think he's fed up when it's been used against him.

No he will get a penalty and while he can't complain about it, I'm pretty sure he will once again think that penalties are handed out with more ease if you are not driving a topcar.

I don't like him driving like that, but I understand why he is fed up with all the bullshit. Everything we saw from Verstappen and the young drivers the last few years and Ham vs. Verstappen last year.....I'm fed up, too. But well, it happens when fans only care about driving standards when their favorite driver is not the culprit.

Said he lost 8 tenths per lap in pen interview. Didn't seem accurate to me, when he was losing his temper on radio he was all over ocons gearbox.
Said he was 100 times better than ocon all weekend.

I think the team said to hold station and had Ocon give Alonso DRS to defend from Bottas. Ocon almost drove away after SC ended but slowed to help Fernando.

edit: and there it is

Finally his antics are noticed. For such a seasoned racing driver he quite often retorts to silliness.
