I have read in the past that these did end up being used in NASCAR's answer to the Trans-Am the Grand American Series as did the Tunnel Port Ford heads.

Pontiac fell into the same trap with as Ford with its tunnel-port engines (302 and 427 CID). The port volumes were far too large, resulting in the classic light-switch engine. Poor mixture distribution and throttle response, poor torque curve.
