And does anyone still remember the URL? I remember posting there in 1998 and am  a bit curious if it is possible to find on the wayback machine.

It never did cease to exist. It just got renamed.

The takeover by Autosport happened at the start of 2005 - here’s the relevant thread announcing the details:

https://forums.autos...matlas-f1-deal/

As Gareth says, the only effect this had on the forums was the change of name. You’re obviously using a different username from the one you used back in 1998, but if you can remember it you should be able to find all your old posts from that period.

I’d still use the AtlasF1 theme if there was a mobile version of it by the way.

It's funny that some still call it Atlas today, given it had that name for 7 years and has been Autosport's forum for 17 years.

Shows how loyal some of the posters on here are to the forum, despite the deterioration in the level of discussion that has unfortunately become apparent over that time.

I've heard a rumour of another Atlas bulletin board before the 1998 one that was shut down and possibly bombed from space.

I still call Mercedes BAR, despite it has been named Tyrrell longer.

I am pretty sure that there was a change of the forum software in the late nineties and the oldest archives thread is from late 1999. The stuff before that is what I am interested in mostly. Actually I can not remember what my username before 2008 was so I would like to find out along the way. I definitely have posted in a couple of Hakkinen vs. Schumacher threads.

Strange to read this after all these years, doesn't feel like 17.5 years . When bira told me the deal was probably going to happen I was totally shocked, certainly didn't expect it.

Funny story is that when the deal was official all the writers had to sign to transfer the IP from Atlas to Haymarket and back then it wasn't digital so I had to print a piece of paper and mail it to the UK. My letter hadn't arrived after 4 weeks so people started to get a bit nervous. I then had to Fedex a single A4 for about 90 euro's to the UK, probably the most expensive piece of paper I'll ever snail mail  The original letter arrived a couple of days later (ofcourse  :stoned:

You have a choice to use the Atlas header, so as far as I am concerned it is, and always has been the Atlas forum.  :stoned:

I had a feeling that Atlas was around in the 80s, I think it was my first taste of the www.

A disgusting thread about a great driver.

Thankfully, 22 years on such a thing would not be allowed on this forum.

Dude. Really?
Have a humour bypass did you ?

Anyhow….
Back in mid 1997 I was a member of Autosport on AOL which had a chat function that many of their F1 journalists would participate in.

I can’t remember which one, maybe Nigel Roebuck or Gordon Kirby, mentioned ATLAS F1 when speaking about a ‘BBS’ that prompted me to join in.

Now look at us..

God - looking through those old topics it hits me how differently people chatted in 2000! You'd never get away with some of that these days!

I think I used to use ten-tenths, rather than Atlas in the early 00s.

Loads of Schumi fans venting their spleen that’s all.
Not all that different from today as far as the passion and tribalism.
There are just more constraints on us now.
Like the use of …how many do you have now? 30 or so moderators ?. Back then it was bira slapping your wrist or sending you a missive that would make you feel about 3 inches tall.

Forums were the twitch/discord of their day. Sadly now in decline.

ITV-F1 board was great for a time

These 20 years on Atlas BB has taught me a lot about self-control, patience and to not engage with everyone.

And the debate wasn’t much better back then. It was more divided with few neutral voices.

The other day some poster called me a boomer for saying BB…. (I’m not a boomer btw, not even close) :D

I think it was around 1995, when I was working on my PhD at Kansas.  At that time I read/posted to rec.autos.sport.f1 and AOL (KenChung and Dmitry came from AOL), and then I came across this great F1 site, AtlasF1.  It became my habit to come into the lab in the morning and read AtlasF1 before starting my day.  IIRC, AtlasF1 was started by two professors down in Texas, which is why I wince when people call this a British web site, because to me, its still this web site that looks out over the pond at races occurring in the rest of the world, without any nationalistic baggage.

Wow, that's something I didn't hear being mentioned for years: Usenet. It probably is still around, although today it is perfectly succeeded by reddit. Come to think of it Usenet and Reddit are essentially the same thing.

And people say the level of discussion has deteriorated.

Remember 2 MH fans asking me why I supported MSC.

They were quite nice, despite all the tension.

Another time however some other MH fan got pretty mad at me, when after a race where MSC won I counted wrong and stated that MSC had taken the lead in the championship. I just apologized to that guy, before the mods jumped in. In any case, the service improved. Until last year, no more "server too busy" messages for years. More moderators and clarification regarding house rules means this place has improved for me, until THAT race last year.

So far I have no one on the ignore list and tru;y truly hope that it will never be necessary.

A big thank you to the admins and mods of this place.

What a time machine internet is. Some of those old threads are fascinating. Especially the one about a young unkown named Jenson Button setting a blistering pace in pre-season testing in 2000. I reckon that kid has some real potential.

Wonder how we'll look back at what we say now in 20 years. Half the stuff I splurge out seems outdated within a week.
