2-Seater (and 3) F1 cars

Noticed today that Redbull are running a 2-seater around their track in Austria

Got me wondering…

First of all - who made that^? What is it? Guessing it’s not actually a modified f1 car, is it recently made or something they’ve had for a while?

I know certain tracks run these most years (Australia springs to mind)…. But back in the late 90’s and early 00’s they were the thing to have. McLaren had the first I’m sure…. And then other teams followed - Arrows even had the 3-seater… does anyone know what became of that?

Remember Minardi having a whole field of 2-seaters and racing them at donnington…. I’m sure it ended in Alonso and Mansell crashing on the final corner

How many teams have them these days? Do they make their own? Where did the minardis end up?

I think it is an old Tyrrel.

I think they're all based on the Tyrrell 026 from 1998. Tyrrell's assets (aside from the F1 entry) were sold to Paul Stoddart prior to his takeover of Minardi, who built a fleet of these cars. I believe he still owns them, so either he's sold one to Red Bull or is leasing it to them (rather than Red Bull acquiring it through their takeover of Minardi).

There's also the Arrows AX3 three seater, which looks to be based on the 1999 A20 chassis.

And the two-seater McLaren MP4/98T, which appears to be based on the 1997 MP4/12.

Interesting article here… Stoddart kept the cars apparently and bought a load of the Manor F1 team assets when they went bust.

Was running as the ‘unofficial 11th team’ at races a few years ago as an add-on for rich folk at the tracks.

Not sure if that’s still taking place? A Google search throws up a load of different cars all in differing liveries

Its very much not the same car. Different airbox shape, different front wing endplates, completely different rear wing, different bargeboards.

This certainly is derived from the already mentioned Tyrrell 026 as used in the 1998 season. You can see the similarities in the nose, side pods and engine cover.

For such an old (24 years and counting...) and unsuccessful car, it still looks relatively modern with the Red Bull livery.

The Stoddart two-seaters have already gone through previous bodywork revisions, so I think it's conceivable that Red Bull have updated theirs again to a more modern aesthetic.

That is the case indeed as it seems as the car has undergone serious modifications.

 

That being said, I get a ChampCar feel from the car by looking at its current state.

I feel a little warm and fuzzy that a 1998 Tyrrell still have some sort of relevancy in 2022, however tenuous it might be.

Yesterday, Mission Winnow held a promotional event with celebrities at Fiorano with the 3-seater Ferrari car. The car included an updated livery with green Mission Winnow logos. Carlos Sainz did not have any MW signage, only the participants. #F1 #essereFerrari
 
 
The 3-seater car is sponsored by Mission Winnow, like they sponsor and maintain the 2-seater bike Ducati uses in similar events in MotoGP. Mission Winnow is not on the official F1 livery.

I thought they quietly signed back on a few races back? There was consternation at the thought of that awful green being added to the livery

Technically.. they are a sponsor. But just for the 3 seater. And they are credited as partners in Ferrari's website.

Mission Winnow is a way of getting Marlboro logos onto F1 cars under the guise of something other than advertising ciggies

They're free to do anything with that showcar, yet the opt for the (to my memory)  ugliest nose a Ferrari had in recent history :D

Which, IIRC was one of the cars used for the "driving school"-style thing in the PC version of F1 2002.

Who knows how many hours of windtunnel time were spent optimizing the airflow for the passenger sidepods, and that nose is what they came up with! :p

This must be a much nicer experience then sitting right behind a driver blocking your view in the twoseater .
