Interesting paintwork on the Mike WIld Rotax. I seem to remember Vaughan Coburn ran something similar in the 80s and wasn't Andy Preining sponsored by OKM an Austrian "adult" magazine.

I paint work I always liked best was the EMC 7 Up livery, dunno why because it was basically white with a big 7 Up logo. I seem to remember Donny McLeod also running in Pepsi colours too. Does anyone know if that was part of the same sponsorship deal?

I think Dr Joe Ehrlich never really gets the credit for his contribution to supporting British GP racing. I think he was active from the 50s right through until at least the late 80s and most of the riders he supported were Brits or Irish.

7up is a Pepsi brand. OKM (actually, ÖKM = Österreischiches Kontakt-Magazin) also sponsored Klaffenböck, iirc. I also remember Dolly Buster   :stoned:

Anyway .. back to 2 strokes of a mechanical kind!!!

I think Joe Ehrlich developed an EMC split cylinder 2-stroke in the 1950s, which I understand worked a little like a supercharger. I have also heard of stepped 2-strokes and in the early 1980s my Australian uncle used to talk about the Sarich 2 stroke which was developed in WA and I think was an orbital motor. I don't know what any of these are, I am not a mechanic or engineer, but does anyone know why they didn't get developed for racing or if they were outlawed why? Did anyone try fuel injecting a 2-stroke and if it worked would this have made them environmentally more acceptable?

Joe was innovative, but this idea was old. Puch and DKW (amongst others) had built them prewar already.

The Sarich was by most definitions supercharged hence not eligible to race under current regs. The aim of the project as i understand it was a clean 2 stroke. They did it, but there seems no market for it.

There is a lot going on with injected 2 strokes. KTM were first to market with a viable one - i don't count the Bimota V-Due as viable. KTM tried to patent their layout - but failed as they'd copied it from a Kiwi, Neil Hintz. He's put a few vidos up on line but happily discusses what he's doing on Kiwibiker Forum. The ESE Engineering thread in the Bucket racing section on there has turned into one of the great source and discussion threads on 2 stroke tuning with a number of top name tuners posting. If you're interested in tuning them, you could spend many profitable hours reading on there.

Scratching my head a bit to remember completely but in about 1993 or thereabouts Ford were developing a 3 cylinder 2 stroke car engine. I was involved with the ignition hardware - ign coils and spark plugs.  By 1994 it was really flying and putting out approx 90 bhp, and with little weight the Fiesta responded very well. But it would not complete a 600 hour Durability Cycle so never got into production. I think it was issues with the rolling element large end bearings. The Orbital part concerned the Fuel Injection system which had some sort of air entrainment technology. Very clever.  All this is IIRC btw.
