11 of 22 races done. How would you rank the drivers this year after the first half of the season?

I haven't done a race by race rating so these may be inaccurate but my tiers would be:

Tier 1: Verstappen, Leclerc

Tier 1.5: Hamilton

Tier 2: Norris, Alonso, Russell

Tier 3: Perez, Vettel, Bottas

Tier 3.5: Sainz and Ocon I guess? ( Maybe Magnussen? )

Id definitely put Russell in same tier as Ham. Considering its new team for him, I thought he was superb up until now.

Alonso should be in that tier as well, he just had absolute shut luck.

Strange that you put Russell behind Hamilton even though Russell outscored Hamilton most of the year. And Perez is doing a truly stellar job this year in a second driver role, even won Monaco on merit. Norris very close to Max & Leclerc level imho, he just needs to become more constant but talent wise he is Tier 1 imho.

Stroll has been very underwhelming this year imho but we know they won't replace him (although they should).

Zhou did well this year (in particular his race pace is pretty good) but in all honesty: Pourchaire should get that seat. Zhou is a good driver but there are better ones, like Pourchaire, out there.

AlphaTauri drivers have been a bit underwhelming as well. Tsunoda constant up and down, Gasly not on the same level as the previous two seasons. And Ricciardo oh well his drop in form makes me sad.

Tier 12: Latifi.

1) Leclerc
2) Russell
3) Max
4) Hamilton

The others I won't list

Leclerc has been brilliant this year.
One bad race admittedly and a lot of crap strategy and poor reliability.
His overtaking has been best of the field.

I think Russell has had a great year so far as well. I'd suggest he has been up there with the best. He's had a much much harder car to drive than the front runners and much more prone to inconsistent handling but has done a great job. He's also been up against the best team mate my a fair distance compared to Max and leclerc.

Max has been great as well. Albeit he's lost out a few battles with Leclerc too easily and was outclassed by Perez in Monaco, fortunate to end up where he did.

Hamilton has had some bad moments with the poor handling Mercedes but has also looked more often than not faster than Russell. He just needs to get his consistency back up which hopefully he will with a more stable car.

1. Leclerc
2. Verstappen
3. Russell
4. Hamilton
5. Perez
6. Sainz
7. Norris
8. Ocon
9. Bottas
10. Alonso

Doing this list, it strikes me that what we're lacking this season is a really dazzling performance from someone outside the three top teams. I really wanted to put someone from further down the grid in the top six, but can't justify it this season at all. Norris and Ocon are closest, but....nope.

@ Messy: seems like a fair ranking but... where is Bottas? Surely he should be in the top 10. Also I wouldn't put Norris behind Sainz or Alonso behind Ocon. Alonso had a lot of bad luck this year. Vettel also had several nice drives. Sainz made a bit too many driver erros for me so I would put him lower. Albon for sure deserves to be in the top 10.

Yeah, as I said these are maybe inaccurate. And good point about Norris too. So maybe just move Hamiilton to tier 2?

Give Hamilton a car that allows him to win a race and he is still Tier 1 imho but, like Gerhard Berger said, 'when you are older you don't take the same amount of risks anymore if it's not for a win' (quote of Berger about Hamilton).

But Russell did outperform Hamilton for most of the year. But not in Silverstone where we saw that Hamilton can still do it.

Yes I did and noticed that Max would have out qualified Perez easily without the red flag, which was caused by Perez. I also saw a Perez that not had the pace but won because Monaco being Monaco and strategy.

I disagree that Russell out performed Hamilton most of the year, they are equal on Saturday's and Hamilton has had to many issues that wasn't his fault on Sunday's for it to be a fair comparison, looking at race pace Hamilton is the faster of the two despite the results. If we are working in tiers like OP, I'd put them both neck and neck at the moment.

As for the rest just like last year there are two drivers a million miles ahead of the rest, and its Verstappen and Leclerc

I updated it a minute or two later realising I'd not put Bottas in! Unfortunately at Albon's expense, but I agree he deserves to be in there. My main difficulty was where to rank Sainz and Hamilton - maybe I've erred on the high side for both of them.

Ofc this is a subjective list and it's subjective for everybody but imo Russell, Hamilton and Alonso should definitely be in the same tier.

Russell simply hasn't shown the consistent race pace to warrant these rankings, or to be listed in the same tier as Leclerc or Verstappen, who have shown great race pace much more consistently than Russell. The points difference between Russell and Hamilton can be put down to luck. I'd have both in the tier below the best (LEC, VER) as top racers alongside perhaps Norris and Alonso with Perez around about #7.

@ Paths: we don't know what the pace of Russel or Norris would be if they had a Ferrari or Red Bull. Russell had only 1 DNF so far this year and in all other races he finished either 3rd, 4th or 5th but never lower as 5th: that's pretty consistent to me. In fact he is the most consistent driver in the whole field imho.

One could make an argument to put Norris in Tier 1 considering the way he is trashing Ricciardo in what I believe is a very poor McLaren car. Lando is probably outracing that car.
Perez is clearly doing a much better job as Sainz: he came 5 times 2nd and won in Monaco.

Think I'd say Max has just shaded Charles, mainly because of the error Charles made at Imola, but they've both been fantastic.

Also Alonso is being seriously underrated in this thread. The guy is incredible, especially for a 40 year old.

It's all subjective. Imo Hamilton has the best race pace on the grid so Russell not being up there does not mean he has performed worse than Max or Leclerc who have weaker team mates to compare to. You might think differently but in no way is anyone "wrong".

Consistent results, with some decent luck thrown in. I'm talking pace, where we can use Hamilton as the comparison. I think they've been evenly matched in the season so far with Russell a slight qualifying edge and Hamilton a slight race pace edge. That speaks very well for Russell, because it's his first year in the team. He's doing everything to show that he can be a leader of a team so far. However, sometimes Hamilton has looked considerably faster in races, and though it's a tough comparison for both because they are of a very high standard, there have been enough instances of quite large deficits for me to not quite rank him (or Hamilton) this year alongside the metronomic superiority of pace both Leclerc and Verstappen have shown. Perez on several occasions has been competitive with Max but it seems the car development is now moving away from what he'd prefer and Max his getting his pointy front end. Leclerc has been super almost every weekend. I don't think we can say that for Hamilton and Russell, and that's to be expected because Russell is not settled into the team the way Max and Charles are theirs. Anyway, that's my view. Maybe Russell is on that level with Max and Charles but I need to see more, really.

I find all this "Russell's race pace has been nowhere near Lewis' but its been distorted by experimental setups and luck" narrative less convincing the longer we get into the season and the longer George is ahead in the table. Admittedly, Lewis has pulled himself back ahead in the last couple of races - but I think Russell absolutely deserves his due for matching Hamilton from the off.

Bottom half-

1. Verstappen.
Only real flaw he had was Spain. His final Q3 lap was interrupted 3 times now, which also made life harder in the race. Without the two similar car issues and AT, he would have been 2x2 and 1x1 more up the road and almost unobtainable by others. When not in trouble, he is on the podium, just like 2021.
2. Leclerc.
More costly mistake in Imola. Spun in Q3 Silverstone. A bit too lenient towards the team when they mess him up. Car is a rocket in every sense of the word. It burns like one too. 4 non-podium finishes hurt a lot and 3 victories down on Verstappen.
3. Hamilton.
Evergreen, a bit absent the first couple of races, but trying out stuff cost him dearly at the start. Seems to recover well without the car producing milkshakes.
4. Alonso
Bad luck but very feisty for his age. Love to see how he still keeps the juniors at bay
5. Russell.
Very consistent, but a bit bland.
6. Perez:
5 pts ahead of Verstappen earlier this season, but that is long gone now. Currently 57 points adrift.
7. Sainz:
No2 that thinks he is no1. I see some Toro Rosso vs Verstappen things shine through. A few unforced errors earlier and needed quite the luck to win his first ever race.
8. Norris
9. Bottas
10. Magnussen
11. Ocon
12. Zhou
13. Schumacher
14. Vettel
15. Gasly
16. Albon
17. Tsunoda
18. Ricciardo
19/20. Canada (pick your order)

1. Verstappen - Rarely makes a mistake and consistently delivers whatever the RB is capable of
2. Leclerc - Very unlucky to be so far behind in the championship
3. Russell - Delivered beyond expectations against a formidable team mate
4. Hamilton - Disappointing start by his own ridiculously high standards, but improving as the Mercedes improves
5. Norris - Comfortably and consistently beating his experienced team mate
6. Perez - Closer to Max on pure pace than any team mate since Ricciardo
7. Sainz - Rough start but since Monaco has finished in the top 2 when his car hasn’t let him down
8. Albon - A couple of stand out performances to get points in one of the slowest cars
9. Ocon - Edges out Alonso for me. Very consistent season so far.
10. Alonso - Shows he still has it on occasion but let down by a few unsavoury incidents

Most improved driver: Schumacher - This may be extreme recency bias but he seems to have come alive over the last few races and I’m excited to see if he can continue this.

I've done this from the top of my head.

1. Max Verstappen (driving at top level, barely any mistakes, calmer than last year)
2. Charles Leclerc (best in qualifying, limited by car reliability, but I'll still put a smidgen behind Max)
3. George Russell (mostly impressive in a new team and in the spotlight, looks like he belongs at the front)
4. Lando Norris (maximising opportunities in a car that's not as good as last year)
5. Lewis Hamilton (some impressive moments, next to some more anonymous times, but in a difficult car)
6. Valtteri Bottas (a man reborn in the Alfa; has impressed despite terrible relaibility)
7. Esteban Ocon (has been quietly impressive all year)
8. Fernando Alonso (lots of terrible luck, but there's life in the old dog yet and generally still impressive)
9. Sergio Perez (much closer to Max this year, seems to be a better all-round driver, has made mistakes still though)
10. Carlos Sainz (some horrible mistakes, but also a lot of bad luck)
11. Alex Albon (dragging that Williams into places it shouldn't be at times)
12. Guanyou Zhou (a tad anonymous at first, but quietly getting into his stride in F1 and having a solid rookie year)
13. Sebastian Vettel (some starring days in a dog of a car, but also some less stellar days too)
14. Kevin Magnussen (great comeback speed, but still a bit of clumsiness in racecraft)
15. Pierre Gasly (what's happened to him? Had a couple of moments, but a lot more anonymous)
16. Daniel Ricciardo (recent upturn doesn't detract that he looks lost for much of the year)
17. Yuki Tsunoda (Ironed out a lot of his erraticism from 2021; closer to Gasly, still not 'the real deal' though).
18. Mick Schumacher (should be higher soon, but I can't forget his terrible first third of the year)
19. Lance Stroll (completely anonymous this year)
20. Nicholas Latifi (trundling round waiting for it all to be over)

1 Verstappen/Leclerc.
I must say its difficult to filter out the influence of the car. Imo the Ferrari is the quicker car but Red Bull has the better pitt wall. Then again, Max had more bad luck with the car. Charles his misstake in Italy robbes him from a spot above Max. Maybe even Max has done slightly better this year.
2 Russel. Sharp in qualifying and more agressive than Lewis. (still in front of Lewis including a DNF)
3 Hamilton. Slightly better in races compared to George but most of the time he starts a few places back and can't make up ground. Lewis his overtaking is a bit meeeh.
4. Norris.
5. The rest.

LOL at pretty much everybody putting Hamilton below, if not far below Russell.

Lewis had a crappy start to the season, but I'm not sure we've been watching the same two recent races where Hamilton was closer to his 7 WDC form than lower ranked than a fast, but still unproved driver.

"You're only as good as your last race", I guess.

I would put Hamilton, Verstappen and Leclerc on tier 1.

Russell, Norris, Sainz, Perez on tier 2. Maybe Alonso.

Not bothered about doing the rest.

10. Magnussen

I put Leclerc ahead of Max because overall they appear similar, but seems to have his team mate more under control. Norris is maybe overrated in my ranking with how hard Ricciardo has become to judge, but I cant see any justification to put him behind the Merc duo. I put Hamilton ahead of Russell because the H2H would be entirely flipped without his misfortune in Oz, Miami & Spain despite whatever they tried out and the consistency argument isnt flying anymore after the last two races (besides LH's highs are much higher). I struggle to place Alonso, somewhere between 4th and 6th in any case. He had so much terrible luck but also some strange stunts, but his pace is crazy. Perez is a rock solid #2 but I feel the trend is going against him. Ocon is a safe pair of hands but really lacks Alonso's spark most of the time. After this I struggle tbh, I picked Bottas and Kmag for the rest of the top 10 but Vettel, Albon and Sainz could have been too. then follows the AT duo, then Zhou, Ricciardo, Mick, Stroll and then Latifi

We're judging the previous eleven races, not the previous two. If we're hyst selecting a couple of random races, why not Jeddah and Imoa? I appreciate that Goerge has had a bit of luck but given that it's  6-5 to George in quali and 7-4 on race day it's perfectly legit to place Russell higher. Especially given that he's new to the team and Lewis has been there for a decade.

Hamilton has looked quicker when both are running under the same circumstances (especially in race trim), but he has been inconsistent and overall not at the level that we are used to.

Credit to Russell who has had a really solid start in a new team (and difficult car), but if Mercedes holds their current form I'd expect Hamilton to be ahead come the end of the season.

Hamilton was unlucky with Magnussen in Spain and George was lucky with SCs in Melbourne and Miami when he was doing worse than Hamilton. I would say Hamilton should be leading 7-4 in h2h races.

I will only focus on 2 hottest topics/rivalries.

1. From my totaly subjective point of view: Leclerc is faster over one lap, but Max is more complete driver. I know this catchphrase is Alonso vs Lewis kind of stuff from 10 years ago, but this is exactly how I see it.

2. Russell is not the next goat. He is a great driver, probably 3rd best from the new era after Max and Charles. He did outstanding job to keep Lewis honest and so far beat him fair and square more frequently than Bottas, Rosberg or Button did. But I got a feeling Lewis got him covered and despite being down on points he is in no way unsettled by this fact. So, despite rating Russell very highly and being super impressed, yet I dont see that extra spark of genius that you see with Max or Lewis.

I like that a couple of people are putting Magnussen in their top tens, even if I didn’t. I think he’s very close. Has looked a lot stronger than I expected pre-season, him and Albon have both done very well and I’m counting on one of them to carry the ‘underdog star performer’ baton through the second half of the year.

I've not realised that Hamilton had significant advantage in race pace and usually the one between him and Russell who is ahead after T1, finishes the race ahead. People mention all the races where Russell benefitted from things like SC but I, for example, think, that Russell had Hamilton covered in Canada if not for that overoptimistic slicks attempt in Q3. He's the one ahead in points despite having the only DNF of the season within the team and neither of his races were as poor as Hamilton's in Imola. I think they've been very close on performance this season, would be around tied on points if accounted for luck/misfortune.

Leclerc, Verstappen - Top two are way clear. Very difficult to split them. Charles has been great in qualifying whereas Max is getting to that point in races when I'm now extremely shocked if he doesn't win.

Hamilton, Russell, Norris, Alonso - All four have shown glimpses. Nando has been extremely unlucky, Lando is dominating Riccairdo again. Russell has settled quickly and is doing everything he should be doing but when he needs that extra tenth in the race, I still think Lewis has him covered.

Ocon, Bottas, Sainz, Perez - All unspectacular but doing a decent job.

Magnussen, Zhou, Vettel, Schumacher, Albon - Have shown occassional glimpses but still plenty of off-sessions and mistakes from all.

Stroll, Tsunoda, Gasly, Ricciardo - Big fat meh. Gasly is the real disappointment here while Ricciardo seems to have checked out.

Latifi - Silverstone qualifying aside, I really don't understand how he's still on the grid.

Top - Verstappen and Leclerc too easy

Perez, Russell, Bottas, Norris, Hamilton, Ocon all doing well.

Alonso, Magnussen, Albon, Sainz mostly well but can sometimes go a bit awry.

Schumacher, Vettel, Gasly, Zhou, Tsunoda - stand out moments but need consistency from themselves or the car... or just seem annoyed like Gasly and Vettel.

Oh no its the rest who are at the point of bye bye - Ricciardo, Stroll, Latifi. Goodness me. Goodness me.

Correlation between having the best car and highest rating is s little too high for me to be taking this kind of vote very seriously…. 🙂

Its always been a common side effect of rating threads that a driver placing a front running car roughly were it is expected to be will often get a 8 or 9, while a driver doing the same in a midfield car will get a 6 or 7.

I tried to take the car factor out of account, but it is very difficult to do so, as most coverage is skewed towards the top teams, thus you tend to only see the lower midfield and runners when something goes wrong. We didn't see too much of Ocon in Austria, yet he was probably in the top 3 drivers in that race.

But also, the top drivers are generally in the top teams.
