I lust after the four-wheel hub dyno.

Dynapac here in NZ do a range of very good hub dynos. Pretty sure they'll sell you a 4WD setup. Last time I saw their prices they were pretty good by world standards.

This one was from Australia and the company seems to be very well regarded.

One interesting thing for me was the lack of drama. If you have been around many 1000+ hp dyno tests you know they are liable to fill up the shop with noise, smoke, and stink. This was just whirrrrr. Like testing a vacuum cleaner.

No water leaks, no oil leaks, no shouting at one another. The only one to get excited was the computer trace.  Definitely not normal. Not sure i like it.

" Like testing a vacuum cleaner"

That's the problem with EVs , they do their job, but very boring.

I have tried to watch formula E & electric rallycross on TV , but switched channels in less than 5 minutes.

Yep, racing is coming to a crossroads. The future of the automobile is EV, but that leaves motor racing without a future, or at least a future uncoupled from road vehicles. There is no mass audience for EV racing that I can detect.

Hub drive dyno tests are a lot more like an engine dyno test than a roller type dyno, which invariably caused entertainment when we first started turbocharging FWDs. The most common message from the control room was "Leave the steering wheel alone". Easier said than done.

Watching the heavily edited MotoGP pap we get here in NZ, it doesn't appear there's much of an audience for the E bike racing either. It's consistently producing very close racing - and doing quite respectable lap times too - but it's just not grabbing anyone's attention. I'm on record as saying that if I have to run an E bike to go racing I would. Racing is racing....

But I'm starting to wonder if the game is worth it.

Having sampled fire - breathing machinery making loud and exciting noises - can you go happily to racing vacuum cleaners ?

Some long while ago now Adrian Reynard came to give a racing talk and turned up in his new Tesla Model S. He raved about it and said EV's were the future. Somebody said so the  end of racing.

His reply was , I thought, a good one " nobody uses sail for commercial marine transport but the sailboat industry and  recreational sailing is huge and growing so racing will probably stick with IC as its a leisure business at the end of the  day."

Likewise, few people use equine transport these days but the gee-gees are seemingly more popular than ever.

Mainline has a nice party trick... it can connect to the engine ecu and automatically map the ignition curve for the best tq at any rpm... It locks the engine speed and then just does a timing sweep to get the lowest timing for max tq at that rpm.. I presume it is not unique in the dyno world, but I saw it first on a mainline..

I was surprised that they did not hold it at WOT for any length of time , say at least 5 seconds.  Would the power creep up as things warm up, or fall off?

(I am used to diesel engines where you maintain rated power for hours on end).

That is certainly my hope but things will change for sure, for example the piles of cash from the mfg'ers will be headed elsewhere.

That is certainly nice for the romance of the sport but it does put a lot of our friends out of work.

Hell, it's not like anyone signs up for the pension plan. Racing is perpetually unstable. That's just part of it.

This is the real schism.

If you want big dollar flashy manufacturer-blessed racing you need to play to their tune. If you want to go back to V10s(why?) and biofuels, you'd better get used to engine tuners and surviving mostly on prize/tv money with a budget cap to match.

Sportscar racing will have some difficult decisions to make.

If the manufacturer money goes, perhaps the sport needs to look for more involvement from non manufacturer companies -

Red Bull for example have put a lot into Motorsport.

I have seen all kinds of sponsor names on NASCAR race cars

Is it only tobacco companies that are barred ?
Or is alcohol sponsorship also barred ?

That still leaves many businesses that could get involved that are not - manufacturer/tobacco/alcohol

Tobacco and energy drinks have similar business models and marketing budgets. A major part of the product cost is in advertising and promotion.

In CART/Champ Car, the tobbaco companies were willing to spend several times what a normal company would on team sponsorships. In part this was because tobacco was so limited in where it could advertise legally, but also due to their huge ad budgets.

Ferrai's biggest sponsor is PMI.
McLaren's biggest sponsor is BAT.

The PMI deal is unknown at this point and the BAT deal is probably equal to Shell and smaller than Petronas, Red Bull, the Crypto brands, Oracle, etc.

Crypto/Blockchain-whatever as an industry are on far more cars. Though these days I'd probably take my chances with tobacco sponsorship than crypto....

No lawmaker isn't going to ban use of sails, same is not guaranteed of combustion engines. Lets hope that carbon neutral fuels will be plenty and enough.

Sportscar racing will have some difficult decisions to make.

Why?

Because, ultimately, racing is entertainment. We aren't curing cancer or saving the bloody planet; we're putting on a show. The more senses stimulated the better. Make the car a spectacle to watch with flashy cars, drivers and scantily clad non-binary multinational-conglomerate marketing representatives which the casual racing fan can understand. Burn something with a splash of methanol in it, so it stings your nose and eyes just a little. Make the engines screaming, snarling monsters that not only offend the ears, but pound into your chest. Extra points if you can win with a V12. If the cars can hit you with some mud or blow sand/grit at you every once in a while, I'm always a fan of that as well.

It's a spectacle. Make it one. If you want hybrid systems, then do it in the spirit of the old LMP1, as a system to make the car faster. No doubt, Hypercars would be faster if they were IC only. There is just too much of a weight penalty. What we have right now feels a bit contrived.

Love watching Mate Rimac getting nervous. You made the car Mate and the driver is an F1 WDC.

(Sure I would be nervous but I wouldn't be asking Nico to slow down.)

Even more interesting than this, perhaps, Porsche has sold more than 80,000 Taycans so far, including 40,000+ in the last 12 months.

Couldn't take my eyes off the Brake and Throttle dials. Some interesting observations:

 - Significant periods at high speed with zero throttle and zero brake - speed dropping moderately quickly. Did they need "lift and coast" to top up the battery? Laptime would be even better if this was eliminated.

 - A couple of instances of left foot braking (eg 3:15)

 - Lots of brake modulation.

 - Infrequent throttle modulation. Throttle indicator seems to show only 5 or 6 discrete levels.

Just guessing:

- probably trying to keep battery/motors/controller(s) cooled. Lots of power consumed at high speed for very little time gain.

- ya

- Some guys are like that more than others. Also, it could be line pressure (as opposed to master pressure), which is controlled by the ABS.

- Proper drivers don't use much partial throttle (especially when using a traction control system which is crazy good) and that is definitely a proper driver.

What's the off-throttle slow down rate in a car like that? Maybe he can lift where he'd need to brake in an ICE car?

Yep. As I was just saying yesterday in another context (NASCAR). . .. Auto racing is a glamorous sport that a) celebrates life on the edge and b) requires truckloads of money. It’s only natural that the race biz would attract more than its share of crooked operators.

This particular balls-up has the potential to be fairly far reaching. Fritz is a hell of a good guy in racing circles and he supports several Dutch drivers, including Rinus VeeKay. He also has connections with Max V. Guido Van Der Garde has been the Jumbo LMP2 fair-haired child driving next to Fritz for a long time. It will be interesting to see how far the shrapnel scatters.
