Max Verstappen appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau

Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau on Thursday.

He was presented with the award by Conny Helder, the Minister for Sports.

One day before the start of the first Dutch Grand Prix (weekend) ever to be driven by a Dutch World Champion, Max Verstappen recieved his Dutch knighthood by Sportsminister Conny Helder.

220901_mlzs_helder_en_max_verstappen.jpe

Now strictly spoken, Verstappen is not knighted. But rather handed the title Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau. This is a title which can be translated to an OBE title in Britain the MBE title that Lewis Hamilton recieved. The only difference being that there is no official title to this. So he wont be addressed as Sir or have an OBE like title behind his name.

Minister Helder told (Google translate copy paste session);
"There's a lot more to it than just talent to become champion. Many years of hard and long work, do not give up and continue. You are a great inspiration for many. And in the end, you are the first Dutchman to drive to the Formula 1 world title. What a fantastic achievement. You have also put the Netherlands on the map worldwide."

People around the world can not imagine how Verstappen has transformed the sporting landscape in the Netherlands in those years being in Formula One. From it being a niche sport, to being a sport that everyone has his or her opinion about. Even at kindergartens kids are walking around in Red Bull merchandise these days. Formula One was already big in, let say, Germany, Britain or Brazil. But due to Verstappen it has grown massively here as well. And it is safe to say that it is the number 2 sport over here, after Football. As proven by the packed orange crowds at virtually every Grand Prix. It is, defined by those standards, very much deserved that he was handed this honorary title.

Congratulations Max!

How nice! This can only be good for motorsport to see its best drivers receiving public honours.

Serious flower envy for that arrangement in the photo too.

Why do I feel that this thread will go wrong…

Well done Max.

Well, here goes... I think both the Dutch and those outside of the Netherlands overestimate how popular Max is with 'the Dutch population'. Yes, there are about 7 million people watching his exploits now, but it is underestimated how polarised the Netherlands have always been about sport in general and, I assume, about Max Verstappen as well. I think there are millions now over here who are grinding their teeth because of this special honour. Like when Max was announced Sportman of the Year in the Netherlands last year. There was quite some bitching and moaning about that. For example, De Volkskrant (my former and very woke employer), the most influential liberal/left newspaper of the Netherlands published a big article stating that Verstappen did not deserve that title

Basically, or perhaps rudely interpreted: the Netherlands is divided in half. The lower and middle-income don't read newspapers, rarely read books, prefer on-demand viewing with Netflix instead of watching tv and watch a lot of reality-programs and a lot of sport... the other half read newspapers, books, still watch 'live' television, especially those broadcasted by traditional Dutch broadcasting organisations, they watch the news and political talkshows, listen to podcasts and if they watch sports it are the 'accepted sports' like hockey, skating and women soccer (who deserve just as much money as the men, of course). People like that deem F1 below them. And Max...well...

Because of my former job and current job I meet a lot of the 'left leaning' kind of Dutch folk: writers, journalists, film-directors, or people working with the government and NGO's. If they discover I watch F1 they always ask, with a kind of smirk: 'So... you are a Max Verstappen-fan, then?' If you want the hear the intonation in your inner ear, the question has the tone of: 'So you admit watching porn, do you?' I kind of dreaded the first return of the Zandvoort GP, because if anything had gone seriously wrong (fights in the stands, traffic indigestions because of the GP, a necessary bailout from the government or something), the festive atmosphere around the Dutch GP could have flipped very quickly.

By the way: I think Max fully deserves his 'lintje'... I think his father deserves one also. I really admire how Jos (not my favourite person at all), has turned around his own, rather messy life by raising not only an excellent racing driver (to put it mildly) but also a very decent human being, IMHO. I've never met Max, but I've heard from quite a number of people who have worked with him on filming days and corporate events. Max is super with fans, very friendly and very direct and honest with journalists. His entourage, the people that hang around him, well, I could tell stories... but I am not going for really spoiling the mood.

Arise, Sir Max!

Volkskrant and NGO's by far don't count for half of the population. The Dutch public broadcaster almost denied F1's existence for about 3 decades untill they couldn't get around it anymore. It takes a lot more than half the nation to accomplish that.

It is a saying you recognize the Volkskrant readers by the acidic scorch marks on their doormats.

Apart from certain Dutch guys who don't like being Dutch and rather be British ****.. and don't like anything Dutch (including the Dutch GP with Dutch Fans!).. this award is just an acknowledgment for deeds done in business or sports, ignoring class/background.

The highest Order received by a Dutch sports person is Ireen Wüst, speed skater and openly bi-sexual.

https://en.wikipedia...wiki/Ireen_Wüst

It would take probably 5 WDC's (without cursing on the radio.. AND being nice to your rivals/enemies) to achieve this..

(Thanks for the edit)

Don't know what it is but seems a bit young to be getting something like this.
I don't really see his image as a role model either.

Did the likes of cruyff, van Basten, gullit get one of these?

Imho the Volkskrant treats F1 like they do every other popular sport, so I don't really recognize the posts above. I do agree Max has been a bit polarizing, but the same goes for almost everything else famous.

My in-laws are about as left and "woke" (hate that word) as they come, yet often ask me about F1, but maybe they're just nice people.

Anyway, good on Max, glad he showed up for this award  :p

Yes they did.

Being the best driver in the world and getting a World Champion in an individual big sport like F1 is not something a lot of people will achieve. What Max did was special for a big part of the country. The only reason why it could be considered 'early' is that his achievements could be pale in comparison to what he will achieve in the future.

De Volkskrant does indeed cover F1 and Max quite nicely, but that is because their specialist is a youngish guy (mid thirties, nearing forty, I estimate). I am willing to bet that a lot of the sporting staff of the Volkskrant (especially the older ones) grudgingly accept that they have to cover F1 so extensively. Case in point: their specialist is not a member of their staff, but a freelancer... but perhaps I will drop Lennart (the journalist in question) a mail to ask him how the boomers at the Volkskrant really perceive F1-racing and Max.

Johan Cruijff was appointed Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1974 (I knew that, but for the year I had to google it), and in 2002 promoted to Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau (which came up also). So he was 27 the first time (and more importantly, he did NOT win what he should have won, the world-cup, something with naked ladies in a swimming pool, don't get me started), back then. Ruud Gullit and Van Basten; I really don't know. EDIT: See the post above...

PS: Funny. This is what another old colleague of the VK wrote, now vice-chairman of the Dutch Sporting Press Association:

'When Zandvoort lost its Grand Prix in 1985, any reason to report extensively about the F1 was more and less gone. When Jos Verstappen emerged, my newspaper, De Volkskrant, actually wanted to ignore motorsport. My colleague Hans Van Wissen, our giant in Olympic reporting, threatened to quit his job when the editorial staff wanted to put Verstappen's third place on the front page of the sport-section. That was not done for De Volkskrant. It was a judgement from the seventies and eighties, some sports did not earn to be covered. Boxing was also shun from the pages.'

Question to the Dutchies here: was this recognition well received in the country? (fans, press, etc.) I always notice here in Germany people being very against awarding sportspeople, especially if they dont pay taxes (and in parts it seems to be similar in the UK), so it would be interesting to know how that differs elsewhere.

I think that at this moment most people who have doubts will keep their mouths shut. The Dutch are conformists to the extreme. Homo sapiens non urinat in ventum, is written on a marble pilar-row close to the Leidseplein in Amsterdam. But if, for example, it was found out that Max was cheating taxes, you would be surprised how many Max-criticasters there will be. Well, regarding that... in our country the legal ways to avoid paying taxes are so plentiful, only stupid people would transfer money to the Bahamas or the Isle of Man. And I wonder if Max does not live in Monaco... does he?

So it is well received... until 'we' decide, as a nation, it was not well received. Dutch people are also very good in reversing historical narratives. By the way: which award for which German star received criticism lately?

EDIT: Question for the Brits here: when Lewis received his MBE... how was that received the Land of Brexit, regarding his ethnicity and all?

Land of Brexit?  We were still a colony of the Evil Empire back in 2008 when Lewis got his MBE.

But we are quite socially enlightened these days and women and non-white people getting honours is broadly seen as OK even by the Daily Mail.  Not in the case of Lewis of course who can do no right for certain people.

The Conservative party may elect a non-white male to be the Prime Minister, I think society at large is much, much more colorblind than the discussion points of media and politicians make them.

(No Dhilon, Max is not 'of Orange' now, because that would mean he has become a member of the Royal Family. He has become 'a member' of the Orange honorary 'band', or something like that.

Jos will likely have to wait a long time for a `lintje` if he is ever eligible for one.

When you have whatever kind of conviction you automatically loose the right on a `lintje`. Depening on the severity of the conviction and the crime you `earned` it with, you can be excused after a certain period of time after the conviction.

For the dutchies, Rock&Roll & music hero Peter Koelewijn ( the Dutch artist who was the  Dutch equivalent of Elvis P) missed out on a `lintje` because of that for a very long time but 20 years after the incident (for which he did ackowledge that he had been guilty of that crime, that it had been a crime indeed and that the distinction was rightfully withed from him ) he got a pardon and was honoured after all.

I don't know is such a period of time is valid for which crimes. I also know about a case of a Paralympic Champion who normally should have received a `lintje` as is standard for Olympic Champions but due to a criminal offence in the past could not be honored.

I count on several `Jos haters` over here to be able to fill us in with the exact criminal record of Jos and his convictions. Personally I don't know that listing so I can not figure out if he would ever be eligible again after all for whatever reasons. Nor do I care to do so thus posting such a record of Jos won't get you an answer form me on that question.

Cool beans I guess? The whole honors system doesn't sit well for me, but for all the Dutch sports stars I can think of, I think Max has earned his status as one of the greatest .

However.... Seems they give these honors out for a laugh. I'm surprised that they've given the same award to Nazis, but not Michael Masi. What does that say about Masi?

Max Verstappen is generally very well received, so I doubt there are many complaints about such a recognition.

That said, I also dont think it's that big of a deal. It's a nice recognition, but it is nowhere near the significance that a knighthood has in the UK (or at least, how I perceive it as a foreigner).

Grammatically it is also possible to drive ‘op’ a gracht in The Netherlands, because Amsterdam and other city’s have a lot of former canals that are now streets but still called ‘gracht’.

What is the link between Michael Masi and a Nazi ????

Grammatically it is also possible to drive ‘op’ a gracht in The Netherlands, because Amsterdam and other city’s have a lot of former canals that are now streets but still called ‘gracht’.

But is it still a "gracht" then?  :p

Well I guess the Dutch had to give him something after Lewis received an MBE way back when and recently received his knighthood for contributions to sport. Or in the plagiarised words of Winston Churchill, 'Max - never has one done so little to receive so much from so few'

Yeah the Dutch really care which knighthoods Lewis received.

I’ve got news for you: Not everything is about Lewis.

Reminds me how he sued the Hamilton watch brand, founded in 1892, for using his name.

Likewise, not everything  is about Max, and the Brits didn't even know the Dutch had an honours system - oh wait! they don't.

This topic is about Max though. It says so quite clearly in the title.

it is funny how, when someone - like it might be Hamilton- gets a gong or something in the UK, there is mass outrage that (a) Britain is perpetuating its colonial, imperialist history, (b) it is perpetuating an outdated and oppressive monarchical system, © no other country operates such an awful and divisive anachronism.  Then others weigh in about Lewis being a tax-evader and various other excuses for disliking him for being a bit different.

Then the Dutch award a similar, royally-bestowed post-colonial honour on Verstappen (which he deserves by the way, as their first ever F1 WDC) and nobody gets het-up at all.

Yeah, sort of... just with cobblestones instead of water! Hard on your kidneys on a sport-bike, I can tell you. That is why real Dutch ladies (and many a Dutch boy) prefer these bikes with these really plush saddles. If you are ever in Holland, rent one of these instead of the dreaded E-bikes. It rides fantastically, very regal.

I assume you mean nobody on this forum?
Because many Dutch people complain about him receiving a ribbon while born in Belgium and living in Monaco.

People just love to complain about high trees.

Havent heard those whispers in my surroundings, to be honest.
