F1 should never return to Zandvoort, this is just as bad as what we went through in Saudi earlier this year. This is a very serious post.
Edit: sorry that it wasn't clear enough, this post is a joke.

They are already banned. Ban just isn’t being enforced rigorously enough.
I don't believe it is at every track. This weekend it was (by my knowledge) announced for the first time that there would be a zero tolerance policy in place.

I'm sticking up for the demonised and marginalised flare. Great for the sporting atmosphere. I've been to different sporting events where they were utilised and so far it seems it's only a big problem for people sitting comfortably at home. Just don't throw them on a live race track, probably.
I'm also not one to immediately consider censorship or prohibition as some kind of immediate crutch or fix-all method for anything. And the more prominent proponents of such an attitude I consider in a dim light, frankly.

Better ban Silverstone. Having two track i vasions by people in 20 years is unacceptable.
Serious post as well.

As I said in the other thread, should you also include Silverstone given 2 track invasions mid race during the last 20 years. Those 2 invasions along with the Mercedes worker getting on the track in Hockenheim are by far the worst security and safety failures I can think of in modern times.F1 should never return to Zandvoort, this is just as bad as what we went through in Saudi earlier this year. This is a very serious post.
EDIT: The incident in Germany went so far as being one of the main reasons for the Hockenheim redevelopment it was viewed that seriously.

Air horns used to ubiquitous at F1 events. They were banned and have disappeared. They same will happen with flares.
It will come to a point that the few that set them off are totally outnumbered by those that dislike them and will let their displeasure be known.
I imagine the people that threw flares onto the track today were met with a lot of angry people around them and wont be doing it again.

why does everything need a separate topic around here?
anyway:
[Erik van Haren on Twitter] The person who threw the flare on the track has been arrested by police.

Yeah, we should be careful what we wish for. Fans might resort to bringing vuvuzelas.

The fans are close to the track here. Flares caused a red flag in Q2 and a yellow flag at the start of the final runs in Q3. Not a non-issue for the sporting event, nor do they add anything to the atmosphere.

I would have agreed with you before quali. I like them at football matches as well. Difference is there is no serious harm when somebody throws a flare on the pitch. Apparently, we have to consider the possibility of people throwing those things on the track from now on...

To be fair, I'm in full support of letting surrounding fans deal with such issues by whichever means they deem suitable but in civil society I also acknowledge that it can't always be the case.

Maybe quote some people calling for track bans, then neither yourself nor the one you responded to would be clogging the topic with shite?

Disgraceful post, by that logic you can cancel a few races.

At least something that would make noise. The engines won't do it, then the vuvuzelas might.

It's an honest opinion. That's what a thread is about, isn't it?

Flares and large amounts of smoke is probably not a good idea when in close proximity to 20 extremely fast racing cars where visibility is key. That's all I'll say before I offend anyone.
#25
Posted 03 September 2022 - 14:43
Generally I dont see the problem in having them, but rather in throwing them on track
However in combination with alcohol I dont see this mixing well either well. Also visibility is a valid concern in this sport.
and it's not like people flag this up only because it's Max fans, it's stuff that is banned in football (here at least) and teams of fans doing this are under threat to lose the game in court if they dont behave.

They ban them, then show lots of TV pictures of fans waving them in the air. Mixed messages?

In Belgium they were barely checking bags. I could have brought in almost anything. Hopefully in the future they'll start doing more thorough checks but at the same time, getting 300k people in takes A LOT of time. People need to learn to stop bringing flares.

Its not even just Max fans in F1... Ferrari fans have been using them at Monza for years... red smoke used to drift across the track before the second chicane. I think the only reason we haven't seen merc fans with them is they don't come in silver or teal, and no one thought to use purple or yellow for Hamilton hahaGenerally I dont see the problem in having them, but rather in throwing them on track

indeed
- a flare will be thrown
- a pigeon will pick it up and drops it under the wheels of a car
- car goes off on the banked last corner
- car goes through the catch fencing
- car flies into the sea
- car leaks oil and other fluids into the sea
- a natural disaster will be declared
- F1 will be held responsible
- F1 is outlawed and this forum goes silent

While I agree that flares have no place on a race track, there is this clip from Kimi. Apparently he knew what he was doing...

Verstappen:
Holding flares may be tolerable, as long as it's not too many flares. But to throw a flare on the track is just stupid. I've been told the person that has been throwing has been removed from the track. Just don't do this, this isn't good for anybody. The person throwing will be banned and cannot resume watching the GP, and for the drivers it's dangerous.

Ban them and search spectators at the entrance, take them away if any brings one. If someone still smuggled one in and use one banned the idiot. Very simple.
Easier said than done. With the number of fans trying to enter the circuit it's very difficult to search every single bag thoroughly. If they did then the delays to entry would cause riot.

Spa only sent an email a week before the race saying they were banning them.

It's a matter of logistics, and 100,000 fans are very manageable.

Throwing flares on track is a legit issue because someone might use it to affect the competitive order of a qualifying session or race...
It might be an unlikely occurence but if watching F1 over the years has thaught me anything is that, the weirdest edge case **** can and will happen.
