Success at South Yorks
Sprint Championship
THE largest collection of
racing and historic racing
cars ever seen in South York-
shire were gathered at Sand-
toft Circuit on Sunday Septem-
ber 19th for the South York-
shire Car Enthusiasts’ Sprint
championships run under the
RAC full restricted permit.
The snarl of exhausts the
squeal of protesting tyres and
the smell of Methanol fuel
drifted across the circuit to
the 8000 spectators as the 92
competitors fought it out on the
twisting 0.7 mile track. This
beautiful day provided ideal
conditions and no less than 20
new class records were estab-
lished.
Bruce Hodgson in a Ford
Cortina G.T., specially pre-
pared for this event by Messrs.
E. Hodgson and Son, of Ret-
ford took his class award with
a convincing display of high
speed driving, particularly at
the bends, which had many
people biting their nails with
excitement.
The outright fastest lap was
held by four different drivers
at various times throughout the
day, and the new record even-
tually went to D. Harrison,
from Ilkley, who averaged 67
m.p.h. on this tortuous track in
his immensely powerful 3524
c.c. Cooper Buick. He was
awarded the A.G.I.P. Trophy
and £50.
At the end of the meeting a
special event was held between
the various class winners to
see which of them could make
the greatest percentage im-
provement on his previous best
lap time and collect the Snipe
Trophy and £50, kindly pre-
sented by Mr Arthur Snipe.
This award was won by J.R.
Walton, of Sheffield, who im-
proved by 2.4 seconds in his
Walton-Bristol. The award
for the fastest Historic Racing
Car went to J. R. Brown, of
Burnley who drove a 1,971 c.c.
Cooper Bristol.
Mr. Philip Barker of White-
houses, Retford, driving a Rail-
on car, owned at one time by
Mr. R. Strike a former Editor
of the “Retford Times”, came
third in the vintage car class.
