Dear TNF,

I am trying to identify an image I have which is simply listed as Balsa.
The image clearly is taken at the Lapize hillclimb and the car is a Maserati 4CL [s/n 1566]. The starting number looks to be 95. Question remains, when?

This Maserati was driven to a class victory by Jean Judet at Lapize in 1951 with starting number 72. L'Équipe lists Marcel Balsa as the winner of the 1500-2000cc Racing car class in his BMW in 1952.

This eliminates 1951 and 1952 as 'candidates'. I rather think the image might have been taken at the 1953 Lapize hillclimb. As per Pierre Abeillon's Talbot-Lago De Course it was held at the 8th of March.

Other than that, I have no further info on the 1953 event. Does anyone have an entry list, results or any other information regarding the 1953 event, which might help me with my image?

All help is greatly appreciated.

At Lapize I have Balsa with a "Deho Speciale" in 1951 and with his own BMW-powered "Balsa Speciale" in 1952 and 1953. In 1954 the car had a Ford Ardun engine (thanks to the connection to Arkus-Duntov via Alexander Orley probably). Always the same car with different engines I think. For 1955 it is mere "Balsa Speciale" only (without specification of an engine), but no connection to Maserati. It wouldn´t make sense to me anyway, as Balsa was a notorious special builder and obviously ran a team of cars for his clients, like Nersessian, Orley or Mougin for example.
