Oh jesus, like we need to listen to him say "Bonjourno Gerry". Or talk about the mighty M and M's.

If they use the qualifying results for their preview, then it makes more sense.
Like Damop, I'm not a big fan of Vic's ... Hopefully they'll let Donaldson do most of the talking!
Funny how on TSN I find the guy on site good and the guy in the studio anoying and on RDS I find the guys in the studio good and the guy on site anoying!
Can't wait for next Saturday night to hear Murray and Martin!

By the way ... somebody up there mentioned being delayed by curling last year. Could happen again. The Briar is on that night & it's in BC ... so a late start. Keep a close eye on the listings. I have not done the math yet ... but ... isn't Australia 16hrs ahead of EST ... and therefore ... shouldn't live qualifying be on at ???????? Wait. Sounds wrong. Let me check this. Get back to 'ya

Heh .. I like Vic too. But we're Canadian. Whining and complaining is right there next to hockey.

It's quite simple - they don't need someone to host in the studio - just get Donaldson on the line the whole time. I bet GD gets sick of Vicky cutting him off to blurt out that a Minardi has started its qualifying run.

Like someothers he could have came on did a half ass job and collected his pay check, but over the years he has very much improved his knowledge of the sport, and has made an effort to develope a passion for it.
I 100% agree with that. I guess we're spoiled because we get to listen to Martin Brundle for 1 3/4 hours every race day and we expect everybody to be at his level!

Given TSN's monoploy in Canada, quitting subscribing equates to not watching F1 any longer since Speedvision is blacked out. So obviously option 3 is not really an option.
Therefore, the only option is to complain. I think most F1 viewers in Canada would rather have M&M for the entire race weekend, rather than Vic and Gerry. TSN will not entertain this one second. Since TSN does not listen, this board becomes a natural alternative and forum for venting since many viewers share the same complaints.
There is nothing wrong with complaining about TSN and Vic - they deserve it.
P.S. The Brier is in Saskatchewan, not BC and qualifying is delayed one hour not three. Not that that makes it any better.

They should use more of ITV's features. I remember requesting the Murray Walker ride in the two seat McLaren. I thought it would have been a laugh to hear Murray screaming the entire time while Martin took him around Silverstone. Instead they showed some no-name taking another no-name for one lap. Plus it was voiced over by Rauter.
A few years ago, I worked with Rauter when he covered a horse race...He's TSN's everything man, and probably the only one willing to get up early to anchor the races. I fear that unless someone else comes along, we're stuck with him.

I can understand your logic, but I dont understand your complaints. What exactly is it that you hate about Vic? He doesn't make any mistakes with the names, he rarely makes dumb comments, so he sounds like a dushbag once and a while with comments like "why dont they bring that Mac in, and slap some wets on that puppy" LOL, personally I find it funny. Have you watced Brain Williams recently? And I restate, IT IS NOT Vics job to commentate on the race, he is there to anchor the show. And TSN I do not believe has the rights to ITV commentary during qualifying. So its Vic and Gerry, or nothing. Unless you want on of the sportsdesk dolts who make a snide comment about every sport that isn't played on ice.

Just becasue you like Vic doesn't mean I have to. I am entitled to my own opinions about him whether you agree with them or not. He grates on my nerves.
As far as TSN not having the rights to M&M, that is BS. TSN could easily acquire those rights if they wanted to. Money buys anything if you are willing to pay the price. I have no idea whether on a cost-benefit basis it is cheaper to buy the M&M qualifying show, or to produce your own show with Vic and Gerry. I doubt this is a factor for TSN - My guess is they believe their own F1 preview/qualifying production is:
1) As good or better than M&M
2) Will better attract Canadian advertisers
3) Will be better appreciated by Canadian viewers as it is a "home-grown" production.
In any case, I would prefer not to listen to Vic if I had a choice.

Please! I never said you couldn't have your own opinion, I just wanted to know what you didn't like about Vic. SImple as that. And if you want to know why TSN doesnt do qualifying with M&M, why don't you e-mail TSN and ask?

1) He is TSN's jack of all trades, covering mainly obscure and non-mainstream (by Canadian standards) events.
2) He has a pretentious air about him that irks me.
3) Often I find him smug in his comments and very patronizing to his viewers.
4) He often talks from a position of ignorance and should learn to keep his mouth shut in those situtations.
5) He is very unemotional, much like Mika H. and very much unlike Murray Walker.
About the only thing I will give him credit for is his commentary is mostly unbiased. I don't often hear him favoring one particular driver over another, nor criticizing one more than the other.
PS Perhaps you should try e-mailing them and see if you get a response from them.

About #1, I don't see what the problem is there. TSN assigns him to these things.
I agree with #4, sometimes he doesn't shutup.

2) Will better attract Canadian advertisers
3) Will be better appreciated by Canadian viewers as it is a "home-grown" production.
Especially 3). I'm the first to admit I don't know anything about the TV business, but I'd be willing to bet that the people who make the decisions about how to do the qualifying show don't realize that Murray and Martin are so popular, and that most Canadians would rather hear an experienced British announcer duo. Much like when the World Cup came to the U.S. Many of the networks that I watched games on had an American as the play-by-play guy (calling it like an NFL game!) and then a European as the colour man. When in reality most of us would have much preffered to just have the broadcasts that were being beamed by satellite to Europe here in N.A. so we could watch those.
So I'd think it's not that they can't afford M&M for the qualifying show, it's the other way around - they can't afford to do their own broadcasts for the races, otherwise they would.

"And there's where Jacques Villeneuve SMACKED the wall.... and if you missed it earlier, there is where Villeneuve smacked the wall... THAT's the spot where Jacques Villeneuve, son of the late Gilles Villeneuve, Smacked the wall... as he comes by the spot where, earlier in the race Jacques Villeneuve SMACKED the wall..." SHUT UP ALREADY BRIAN and go back to covering figure skating, it's more your speed!!
I, for one, was SO thankful when TSN took over the Canadian rights to the Canadian GP last year. And they did an EXCELLENT job with LIVE COVERAGE THURSDAY PRACTICE, FRIDAY PRACTICE, SATURDAY PRACTICE & QUALIFYING AND SUNDAY'S RACE!!! Who else gets coverage like that???!

And, excellent point regarding CBC, Brian Williams made you want to hunt the guy down and...
#31
Posted 04 March 2000 - 00:12
BTW, I don't think there was a Thursday practice at any GP since the first Australian GP at Melbourne in 96 ... and every year at Monaco, of course.
And I agree with you guys, they surely didn't name the Williams team after Brian! Off topic: what a duo CBC has come up with for the broadcast of their two CART races: Brian "the son of a great racing name" Williams and Bobby "where the heck am I" Unser!

As for Vic, I've ripped his flesh off in an adjacent thread, so I won't repeat myself.
I think that the "count your lucky stars" logic expressed in some posts above is ludicrous. No amount of air freshener will change the fact that **** stinks, and the mindset that we should smile because there's nothing else is the reason why we have guys like Mike Harris running Ontario.

Free practice is not real, its a myth made up by ancient race fans to fill the time before Saturday qualifying. Ok, there has been evidence of free practices usch as text records of classifications, but no one has ever seen these so called practices! And I only believe in what I see!

Having spent several years in Europe watching F1 coverage I have to say I prefer the M&M intro show as well as seeing free practice which does get covered over there. During free practice the coverage usually included a lot of the rumours that were floating around the pitlane as well as Martin's features about how to drive a racecar. Martin Brundle is respected among the paddock and often walked the grid and talked candidly to the drivers and team principals. I would love to have seen Martin drive Murray around in the 2 seater MacLaren. I remember several years ago one of the teams ( I think it was Tyrell ) gave Murray the chance to drive a GP car " in anger " as Murray would put it. They prepped him in the pits and strapped him in the car only for Murray to stall it in the pitlane. It was priceless and I'm sure it elevated Murray's respect for the drivers from that day forward.
Europe also have Sky sports which have John Watson doing very educated coverage.
One positive thing I can say about TSN is that I appreciated the way they covered the CDN GP last year with the race running in the corner of the screen during commercials. This is similar to the way they covered the World Cup. I would love it if they could make this the norm. I also think this is a better advertising tactic as people are seeing your brand while watching something they enjoy instead of viewing your product with disdain for preventing them from seeing all the action.

The TSN idea for showing the race during commercials is a great idea. It kept me from surfing to other channels like Headline Sports during commericals - it kept me from missing the commercials, which otherwise would have certainly happened.

Obviously I believe you have completely missed the point, so let me reiterate - TSN DOES NOT LIVE UP TO CERTAIN EXPECTATIONS OF CERTAIN VIEWERS, THEREFORE THEY ARE EXERCISING THEIR RIGHT TO COMPLAIN IN THE BEST AVAILABLE FORMAT; THE COMPLAINERS, RIGHTFULLY, ARE BASING THEIR COMPLAINT ON THE PRODUCT THEY ARE RECEIVING, NOT ON THE PRODUCT RECEIVED (OR NOT RECEIVED) BY VIEWERS IN OTHER COUNTRIES!

Now I see why you are so snobbish in your standards, you have nothing to compare it to, or you jsut refuse to compare it to other coverage. Your complaints just arn't strong. You only have to hear Vic from a half hour before the race, and even during that time TSN has provided us with one of the most knowledgable F1 journalists/autohors around in Gerry Donaldson. It's Gerry's job to talk F1, not VIcs, Vics is to anchor the show. Without Vic Gerry wouldn't know what to do on air. And if your TSN, who else do you put on? TSN IS NOT Speedvision, they don't have a roster packed full of F1 experts. Id say they surpassed what the norm would be by providing us with Donaldson. Vic is the best they have, and the fact is theres no major problem with him. When VIc starts mispronouncing driver names, and showing sickining bias, then you can start complaining.

Damop had a good point, actually, they don't even need GD, they can just use the British coverage all weekend.
But your points...
1) He is TSN's jack of all trades, covering mainly obscure and non-mainstream (by Canadian standards) events.
So what ? That's why they brought Gerald Donaldson in. Besides, if you think F1, which is a very minor sport in Canada, is going to get a specialty team for it's coverage, you are living in lala land. Your point is not a specific nor constructive complaint about the F1 coverage, it is just a statement of your low opinion of Vic Rauter.
2) He has a pretentious air about him that irks me.
3) Often I find him smug in his comments and very patronizing to his viewers.
Yet more unconstructive opinion.
4) He often talks from a position of ignorance and should learn to keep his mouth shut in those situtations.
Let's hear an example. Oh, and let's hear about how perfect Murray is, while you are at it
5) He is very unemotional, much like Mika H. and very much unlike Murray Walker.
He presents information that is put together by the time and effort of many employees of TSN, which I for one am quite happy and interested in seeing, and you are complaining that the one guy presenting it does not yell and scream enough. Sheesh.
About the only thing I will give him credit for is his commentary is mostly unbiased. I don't often hear him favoring one particular driver over another, nor criticizing one more than the other.
so there you go, Vic Rauter is not the devil incarnent
If this is the sort of garbage you have been emailing TSN about, no wonder you are not getting any response. I hope you are at least not using the "M" word in your correspondences with them.

I would guess that most people on this board would jump at the chance of providing commentary to TSN in Vic's place. It would be a nice part time job. TSN should employ on contract a journalist that can compliment Donaldson's knowledge, not interupt him with nonsense. Video feed on location of the GP would be nice too. What about interviews with the drivers? Donaldson talks to them, but we only hear anecdotes.
TSN does need to improve the coverage, or subcontract it to people who are more capable of delivering an appropriate production.

Look, the bottom line is I don't like TSN's coverage. I don't care whether or not you agree with my reasons - that's how I feel.
The last time I checked, free speech was still cherished in this country, particularly by consumers.
I don't like the monopoly TSN has and I don't like the coverage they produce. As a consumer, I've sent them inquiries to which they have not responded thus adding more to my frustration and dismay.
Now would I rather they not broadcast F1? Of course not! I can tolerate Vic only for the sport.

Its so true! Seems like every broadcast starts with
"Well Vic I talked with Jacques earlier today.."

And I apologize for speaking rather harshly in my original post. I guess I am just so grateful to have any F1 coverage at all that I wometimes worry about the plug getting pulled altogether. Sure TSN coverage needs improvements and yes they are an arrogant monopoly, but it's the only game in town.
