Hello everybody, just joined the Atlas forum as well and would like to start with Sports Car Racing in South America (Brazil, Argentina, Mexiko, Venezuela etc) in the 1950ies. I have only sparse information on races, race dates, results and which races were held at all. There must have been a lot of these races places like Mendoza, Guadalajara (MEX), Rio, Buenos Aires (and here I refer to non-championship races, of course), Boavista, Salvador, Mar del Plata and the Raffaela 500 Miles. With great interest I read the threads on Chico Landi - he won the Salvador race in 1954 but thats all I know about this event.
Has anybody records or stories about these races?

Tony Kaye did a huge amount of work on this subject, but I haven't heard from Tony in quite awhile.

Bit confused here the heading says sports cars, but the places you mention are mainly known for F.Libre events.Only Buenos Aires + 1957 one off Venesuela, ever had FIA championship sportcar races.

THere were a lot of non-championship sports car races in South America. Tony Kaye's survey covered Formula Libre races. I would be delighted to help with a similar exercise on the sports cars races.

Stefan,

yes I know Martins results since a long time. But he too has very little on theses SPORTS CAR Races, some info he got from me.

Roger, yes we talk about sports car NON CHAMPIONSHIP racing in Latin America. There is no mentioning of them in e.g. "Autosport" from that period. Maybe Chico has something in here or knows about reliable sources?

Hi Udo!

Unfortunatly, I'm not an expert in this subject. In this link suggested by Stefan, you may find some sportscar races in South American in the 50's: the big part of them at the "Non-championship races", though the information given is minimal (but useful). Also check at the "World Sportscar Championship" the results from many of the "Buenos Aires 1000km". If you're interested, I bought a book called "Argentine Grand Prix 1953-1972" that has some reports from this races, and also from a few F1 and F-Libre races. You may find this book in internet bookshop (I bought mine at www.chaters.co.uk).

In Brazil, the only official sportscar race (at international level) that I know is the XIII Grande Prêmio Cidade do Rio de Janeiro, raced at the Gávea circuit at january 4th 1954. It was a confused race, with a rain downpour after one or two hours. Only seven drivers have finished it. Chico Landi was the favourite, but had a tyre blown at the second lap and lost about 10 minutes to change it. Made a good recovery but finished 3rd, behind italian Giulio Musitelli and the winner Baron Emmanuel de Graffenried. In a late interview, de Graffenried recalled that, at the award ceremony, he got a golden watch where it was written "To the winner Chico Landi". Those were the 50's!!!

Please find the results below:
1 Emmanuel de Graffenried (SUI) Maserati 4h14m21s7 76.275 km/h
2 Giulio Musitelli (I) Ferrari 4h22m37s8
3 Chico Landi (BR) Ferrari
4 Fernando Mascarenhas (P) Ferrari 250MM 0326
5 Annuar de Góes (BR) Ferrari
6 Jacques Herzet/John Claes (BEL) Ferrari 166MM 053

DNFs:
José Arroyo Nogueira Pinto (P) Ferrari 250MM 0330
José Maria Ibañez (AR) Ferrari
Euclides Brito (BR) Maserati
Henri Peignaux (F) Jaguar XK120C
Catarino Andreata (BR) Ferrari
Danilo Giappesoni (U) Ferrari
Godofredo Viana (BR) Ferrari
Pinheiro Pires (BR) Maserati
Arthur Troula (BR) Alfa Romeo
Ciro Cayres (BR) Allard
Vasco Sameiro (P) Ferrari

Autosport reported that Viana was seventh and that he drove an Allard. They also reported another race, also won by de Graffenried, at Sao Paulo a week later

Brazil seems to have switched its focus from open-wheelers to sportscars about the time of those 1953 races.
In Argentina, the Club de Automóviles Sport was founded in 1948, and ran a national sportscar championship for many years.
Championship winners were:
1949: René E Soulas (HRG and Cisitalia)
1950: Roberto Mieres (Alfa Romeo 8C-2300 and Bugatti 35B)
1951: Roberto Mieres (Jaguar XK120 and Alfa Romeo 8C-2300)
1952: Adolfo Schwelm Cruz (Alfa Romeo Monza)
1953: Roberto Bonomi (Ferrari 2.7)
1954: E D Saenz Valiente (Ferrari 4.5 and 5.0)
1955: E D Saenz Valiente (Ferrari 5.0)
1956: Carlos Najurieta (Ferrari 5.0)
1957: Luis Milán (Ferrari 5.0)
1958: no award
1959: Roberto Bonomi (Maserati 300S)
1960: Roberto Bonomi (Maserati 300S)
I'll try to find time over the next day or two to post some results (very incomplete)

- P. Romero Filho Allard 6
Other starters:
- Giulio Musitelli (I) Ferrari
- Pérignaux Jaguar C-type
- José A. Nogueira Pinto (P) Ferrari
- Vasco Sameiro (P) Ferrari

Thanks Chico for results of GP Rio de Janiero. I suggest that car
6 Jacques Herzet/John Claes (BEL) Ferrari 166MM 053
should be listed as Ferrari 166MM/53 chassis 0300M

Both Vianas drove one Ferrari at Sao Paolo, so I suggest that that was the car that G. Viana drove at Rio de Janiero and Allard is quite possibly as their second car. However I don't have any other results of Vianas because of lack of results from these race. I hope David and others may add some more results. I think Formula Libre events with sportscars and all kin of national races is also OK to include within this thread topic.

Udo, it takes time to prepare data for posting, which is why I have not yet posted results from Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico etc. Be patient!
In the meantime, those late-1953 Brazilian races won by de Graffenried are teh same ones already posted for early 1954. The races were postponed, but some sources never got around to changing the dates.

did not realize the date change of the Brazil races. Thanks for the info. I know it takes time. No problem. I am very happy with the
proceedings already.

Yeah good question Stefan. Same thing for the Marques. I know the Fittipaldi bros' father used to race. I would bet my nuts that the Wilson above is a relative.

Yes, the Wilson Fittipaldi above is the father of Wilson Jr and Emerson (and Christian's grandfather). The Fuze Fittipaldi in the same race was Wilson's wife.
I don't know about any Ribeiro family connections though - apart from the fact that Darly was Mrs João.

Nice info, David!!!

I must say that Wilson IS the father from Emerson and Wilson Jr. The other Fittipaldi driver is her mother, but her correct name is Juze, NOT Fuze...

Vitesse, thanks for the info on the car!

A further note about the 300S: it appears this might be an early car, possibly even the prototype, as it has a trident badge clearly visible on the grille. Later cars had no badge.

One of my sources has the 1957 1000-mile-winning Bertuel/Menegas car listed as a TC Ford, the other as a Ferrari. I omitted later editions of this race as I believe they were limited to touring (including TC) cars, and did not admit sportscars. But I might be wrong.

Here's a small description of the first editions of the "Brazilian 1000 Mile Race" in the book "A História do Automobilismo Brasileiro":

"Various factors boosted up the importance of the 1000 Mile race. This required 201 laps around the old Interlagos circuit, with a lenght of close on eight kilometers. A real mechanical marathon, this event lasted an average of sixteen hours, with some 15.000 liters of gasoline and 450 tires consumed by the 44 competing pairs. This race was supported by the auto-spares industry, as well as lubrificant manufacturers and a few companies with no direct link to motorsports.
The regulations fired up the competitive nature of this event. There was no point in importing a recent Ferrari or Mercedes model and driving onto the track. Parts of the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes and electrical equipment had to be completely brazilian. The cars were real hybrid masterpieces. The bodywork were similar to the sedans of the late 1930s, with a few aerodynamic improvements, resulting in somewhat clumsy designs. The engines were imported, but were fitted with local parts and were extremely powerful."

And here's the list of winners according to the official website of the event (www.milmilhasbrasileiras.com.br):

Event Date Winners Car Place
1ª 24/ 11 /1956 Catarino Andreatta / Breno Fornari Ford-Carretera SP

29ª 28/ 01 /2001 André Lara Resende / Régis Schuch / Max Wilson / Flávio Trindade Porsche GT3 SP

SP=Interlagos

Just a curiosity: the winners of the 1970 event, Abílio and Alcides Diniz, were the father and the uncle of the ex-F1 driver Pedro Diniz. And the winners of the 1994 event, Christian and Wilson Jr. Fittipaldi, were father and son (as you all probably know).

I'm not really sure about the 500 km races, David. The information I have is minimal, but it seems that formula cars and sportscars were mixed. For sure, there were a DKW running at the 2nd edition of the "500 km of Interlagos".

I think you'll find that the 1993/5 and 1997 co-winners were Franz Konrad and Steve Soper, respectively. Also, Zeca Giaffone is the father of Affonso, Felipe and Zeca Jr. Could that Luiz Pereira (1988) be Luiz Pereira Bueno?

Udo, thanks for your letter. I have not been able to write anything in the Forum lately because I am very busy, moving my office, sold my home and a lot of personal stuff that takes a lot of time. First let me make a few precissions. If you are interested in South American Sports Car Races, then Mexico doesn't qualify. Mexico is in North America. However if you change the subject to Latin American Sports car races then we fit. It is not an easy distinction, specially in Europe where America means USA, and here
America is the continent from Alaska to Patagonia. I know because a lot of people in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, England think we are South americans, Actually, Madrid is closer to us than Sao Paulo, so let's not perpetuate stereotypes. Now, second. What do you mean by Sportscar races? We had the Carrera Panamericana, which was the ultimate, and it was part of the World hampionship. But other racves I could hardly call them Sports cars, they
were basically Touring races. It0s like saying the DTM is Sports Car when it is clearly not. However, in Mexico we had a funny idea which was to include an "Open category" in all races, so if anyone brought a Ferrari Testa Rossa, he could still compete although not in the touring classes, which was a bit unfair. Sometimes we had a few Sports cars, sometimes we had 1 or 2, but these weren't Sportscars races as the ones in Sebring, Nassau, or elsewhere
would be considered. In South America, I know there were some Sports Car races but again, the format was fairly similar to Mexico. The exceptions were the Buenos Aires 1000K and the Venezuelan GP which settled the world Sportscar championship in 1957, and for that one the Rodríguez brothers were denied an entry, by the way.
I have lots of stuff on races in Mexico but right now I am doing Rodríguez bio mostly since I don't have a lot of time, and I have piles and piles of papers with results but Sports car races I only can think of the Avándaro GP which was run rather continuously from 1953-60 and had a Sports car category some years. I read someone talks about the León race where Pedro came in second, and I have two results for that one, but in one Pedro beats Ricardo
who didn't finish, and in the other Ricardo beats Pedro in a Porsche
against the TR250 (a very tight track), so it might have been that they even had two races not one, but I can´t confirm that yet since I am not in that period of their lives (I don't do it chronologically from beginning to end, rather I start in the end and work back). Apart form them, there was only one other car which could be considered Sport, the rest were stuff like Opels, Renaults, Chevys, so I wouldn't consider it a proper Sports car race. Now, may I ask what is this for ? Are you writing a book or something? Or is it just for a site? What's the urgency (so I can prioritize stuff)? Where's Buch? My friends were in Darmstadt (so I had them take me to Bernd's Rosemeyer's monument) and Kessel mostly , but I also went to Frankfurt and Hamburg and Berlin (the old divided) one, and we never got to Nuremberg (I wanted to see where Pedro died) and the Nurburgring since it wasn't in their
plans. Well. let me know exactly what your plans are and then I can see what we can chip in.

Chico,
thanks very much for the winners list of the 1000 miles.
Does anyone know who that Klaus H. from 1992 is? And Marc?? (Surer???)

I did not know about the three 500 KMs of 1957-59 as well. Thanks for the results. In 57 Godofredo Viana was third. I have three Vianas in my records: Godofredo, Jair de Melo Viana and Juan-Manuel Viana, who, I belive is Argentinian. Can you confirm that?

Udo and everyone,

Three months late, but here we go.

1) The 1992 Mil Milhas Brasileiras' winners are Claus Henkotter, Jurgen Weiss (Weiß) and Marc Gindorf.
2) Godofredo and Jair Melo Viana are brazilians. Never heard of Juan-Manuel Viana, which makes me believe he is not brazilian (most likely from Argentina or Uruguay).
3) David is right: the "500 Km de Interlagos" were not sportscar races (but maybe one or two sportscars could hava taken part of it).
4) Fines and Stefan: Luiz Pereira has no relation with LP Bueno, as Francisco Marques is no relative from Tarso Marques (but Tarso's father, Paulo de Tarso, raced in Brazil Touring Car scene in the 70's and 80's) and Joao Ribeiro is no relative from Alex Ribeiro (Alex was the first driver in his family).
5) David, regarding the 1957 results: I have a copy from the "O Estado de S. Paulo" from 1st of december 1957, which introduces the Sao Paulo GP. However I haven't the 2nd of december edition, so no results or race report. There are a few changes and additions from what you've posted:

1957

1/12 Sao Paulo GP, Interlagos
1 J M Fangio (Maserati 300S)
2 Henrique Casini (Ferrari)
3 Chico Landi (Ferrari) - according to the newspaper, Landi drove a Maserati #82, possibly the one of the picture I've posted above.

I've gathered lots of papers with info over sportscar races in Brazil in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Unfortunately, I have no time in the next days to type them in a computer. Hope to bring them to you as soon as possible.

Chico, maybe you can help me with a question I have for a long time already: Most records list the "Pereira" in Luis Pereira Bueno as a second christian name, i.e. Luis-Pereira Bueno, whereas I always believed this to be his first family name as in Luis Pereira-Bueno! What's right here?

Fines,
Pereira is for sure a family name in portuguese-speaking countries. I never heard of "Luis Pereira" as a composed name. But we have lots of "Luis Something" (my name is Luis Fernando, for example, and there's Luis Alberto, Luis Antonio and so on and so on...).

However, I've got the old man phone number and I'm about to call him to get some info for a work I'm into, and maybe I can get his 100% correct answer. Also, I have no idea if his "Luis" is with S or Z, so nothing better than to ask the man himself...

U mean like Spaniard : LUIS PEREZ-SALA, who drove 2 years for Minardi (and whom I consider as a very underrated driver).

Michael, not the right place to do this but it sort of clicked that you were the one asking about Rebaque's March, the smiling face sort of said so in my mind.
About Pereira, I am sure it is a family name, nobody has that one a a first or second name in latin american countries. Actually it is a family name also in spanish and it can be written also as Pereyra in some places.
About Rebaque's march 82C used to win at Elkhart Lake in 1982. The first 6 were delivered in time for the first race of the season, and for the second race there were 2 new cars, 82C/7 and 82C/8. They went to Danny Sullivan and Héctor Rebaque, so the car has to be one of those two. A recollection from the Rebaque people says that they were told it was the last of the first batch (the factory made about 8 more later in the year) so it should be the 82C/8 and as that I am showing it in my records.
Sorry to intrude in this thread. I can now say I threw a thread :drunk:

Finally I'm done with compiling the results for sports and touringcars races in Brazil in the 50's and the 60's. The main sources are newspaper articles, some books (mainly a José Carlos Pace book, but also an Alex Ribeiro's one) and some Internet websites (as usual, a very unreliable source - brings more confusion than help).

I know that the work is far from ready and possibly there are some races there are not for sports or touringcars (I suspect the very first of the list is not), so any help here is more than welcome. Regarding the 500 Km of Interlagos, it appears that it mixed formula with sports and touringcars in the 50's, but from the 60's on there were no more formula cars.

The list is very big and, though it may bring no interest to many of the F1 lovers we have here, it's very useful to see the early career of names like Emerson Fittipaldi, José Carlos Pace and Wilson Fittipaldi Jr.

And if someone is interested to dig deeper into this subject, I suggest some websites (almost all of them in portuguese, better have a webtranslator).

http://www.formulane...tunel/index.cfm (VERY GOOD ONE!!! It's the memories of an ex-driver)
http://www.angelfire...lysbr/menu.html (about Willys Overland do Brasil)
http://www.pumacars.com (In English - about the Puma sports cars)
http://www.dkw.com.br (about the DKW-Vemag cars)

Fantastic stuff, Chico
You can't guess how hard I've tried to get some of those results
I'll have a closer look tomorrow and maybe find something to add

I’ve now checked your data against mine, but can’t actually add much. I can confirm that a lot of the races on your list were, as you suspected, ‘open’ events, including Mecánica Nacional single-seaters, and we differ on a few dates.

01/10/50 – Corrida Interestadual – Interlagos - is this the ame as the Interlagos race I have listed (without results) as the Circuito Entre Estados?

18/8/51 – 24 Horas – Interlagos - I have the date as 18-19/8 (which makes sense!)

??/1/54 – VII Grande Prêmio Cidade de São Paulo – Interlagos - 11/1? (I have it as “the following weekend” from Gávea)

1955 - additional dates 4/12 Rio and 11/12 Interlagos - both cancelled

24/11/56 – I Mil Milhas Brasileiras – Interlagos
I have a note that Landi (Maserati) was disqualified from 1st place (seems a strange entry for this race)

23/11/58 – III Mil Milhas Brasileiras – Interlagos - I have it as 19/11

07/9/59 – III 500 Km de Interlagos - definitely includes MN cars

22/11/59 – IV Mil Milhas Brasileiras – Interlagos - I have it as 21/11

??/11/60 – GP do Rio de Janeiro – Guanabara - I have as --/10
Retirements:
Luciano della Porta (Ferrari 250TR)
David Piper (Lotus)
The other Lotus driver (who was in an Elite) was always known as Francis Francis

27/11/60 – V Mil Milhas Brasileiras – Interlagos - I have ir as 23/11

07/9/61 – IV 500 Km de Interlagos
The first and third placed cars were also driven by Emilio Zambello

26/11/61 – VI Mil Milhas Brasileiras – Interlagos - I have as 25/11

07/9/62 – V 500 Km de Interlagos – Interlagos - I have as 8/9 - definitely included MN cars

30/6/63 – IV Aniversário do Automóvel Clube Paulista (Estreantes) – Interlagos
My information on this race is that Alfas finished 1st and 2nd with a Simca 3rd, then Carlo Figuiredo (Renault), Angelo Pace (DKW) and Carlos Pace (Renault), but that post-race disqualifications gave Figuiredo and J C Pace 1st and 2nd places

07/9/63 – VI 500 Km de Interlagos - definitely incuded MN cars
7) Marcelo Audrá (Maserati-Lancia)
8) José Santos Silva Jr (Maserati Ardun Corvette)
9) Mario Marsiglia (Maserati-Corvette)

??/??/63 – I 1.600 Km de Interlagos
1) Simca
2) Simca
3) Simca
4) Fittipaldi/Bueno (Renault)

Thank you David, Udo and Martin. I'm really glad to help you and also the work you have done before have prooved VERY very useful for my researches too.

David, some comments about your data:

01/10/50 – Corrida Interestadual – Interlagos - is this the ame as the Interlagos race I have listed (without results) as the Circuito Entre Estados?

"Entre Estados" and "Interestadual" have the same meaning (two ways of saying the same thing), but I can't tell you if your or mine version was the one officially used.

1955 - additional dates 4/12 Rio and 11/12 Interlagos - both cancelled

Funny. Do you know what kind of race they were (was it with international entry)?

24/11/56 – I Mil Milhas Brasileiras – Interlagos
I have a note that Landi (Maserati) was disqualified from 1st place (seems a strange entry for this race)

I have a xerox copy from a picture of this race, and Landi's car is definitely a Carreteira one (probably a 30's Ford chassis). I found out that the Mil Milhas he won and was later disqualified was the 2nd edition in 1957 (100% sure - source "O Estado de S. Paulo, 1/12/1957). His partner was also José Gimenez Lopes. In first edition he was definitely DNF.

07/9/61 – IV 500 Km de Interlagos
The first and third placed cars were also driven by Emilio Zambello

I have the newspaper of this race (O Estado de S.Paulo 8/9/1961) and Zambello's name is not even mentioned. But I recall seeing his name amongst the winners and 3rd place somewhere else. Sadly I can't find where right now...

07/9/62 – V 500 Km de Interlagos – Interlagos - I have as 8/9 - definitely included MN cars

I believe the race was indeed at 07/9, as usual, because it's a national holiday (Independence day). But I can't confirm if in 62, the race was one day postponed because of some reason

This race mixed "estreantes" (rookies) with experienced drivers. The two Alfa Romeo JKs (driven by Victor Simonsen and Antonio Bixilia) were not in the rookie class. The Simca-Gordini, driven by Joao Batista Bravo Caldeira was among the rookies and he was disqualified. Angelo Pace was not rookie. Therefore, Carol (NOT Carlo) and JC Pace were 1st and 2nd among the rookies, but I believe (not 100% sure) they haven't finished like this overall.

??/??/63 – I 1.600 Km de Interlagos
1) Simca
2) Simca
3) Simca
4) Fittipaldi/Bueno (Renault)
5) Chico Lameirao/J C Pace (Renault)
or have I got the wrong race?

About this results, I find it strange to see Lameirao already racing in 1963. I always believed his first outings were about 1966-67. But it's possible that you're right.

Also, about all the Mil Milhas dates confusion: my main source was the event main website (www.milmilhasbrasileiras.com.br) and mine dates are also the same as published in brazil's "Racing" magazine (Jan. 2000). But it can be that this magazine also used the website as a source so, who knows...

To finish, thank you so much for your input, David!
