Comments on comments...
•I'll dig out the info on the cancelled Rio and Interlagos races later
•If Landi/Lopes were disqualified from the 1957 Mil Milhas the question remains, were they in a Maserati?
•Zambello 1961 - my source is another Brazilian newspaper, or more likely a magazine (whose name is irretrievably buried in my files somewhere)
•1963 references came from an article on Carlos Pace, and may have suffered from someone's mistranslation into English. I take it the 'Carol (not Carlos)' reference is to Figuiredo?

•If Landi/Lopes were disqualified from the 1957 Mil Milhas the question remains, were they in a Maserati?
Very unlikely, because the rules at that time wouldn't allow a racing car at Mil Milhas. I've seen photos from Landi in a MN Maserati, but I guess (only guess) that he raced'em in the 500Km of 1957 and 58.

•Zambello 1961 - my source is another Brazilian newspaper, or more likely a magazine (whose name is irretrievably buried in my files somewhere)
I just found an old tape with a conversation I had with Zambello. Though he tells nothing about this specific race, he owned a workshop together with Ruggero Peruzzo where they prepared cars for racing themselves and even scored some wins (his quote). Which makes his participation in this car very plausible.

•1963 references came from an article on Carlos Pace, and may have suffered from someone's mistranslation into English. I take it the 'Carol (not Carlos)' reference is to Figuiredo?
Yes, "Carol" reference is to Figueiredo...

All I know about those December 1955 races is that they were cancelled. I don’t know if there was any on-track activity at Rio, but they certainly practised at Interlagos, where Chico Landi was fastest ahead of Godofredo Viana, Celso Lara Barberis, Alberto Rabay and Henrique Casini, cars unknown.

I have checked all Chico's results against mine and made some comments with only very few really new information:

25/1 – Salvador
1) Chico Landi (Ferrari 2.0)

I have Ferrari 250MM 0304. Was it really Ferrari 2.0?

??/?? (03/4?) – Rio de Janeiro - Maracanã
1) Arthur de Souza Costa (Ferrari)
2) Celso Lara Barberis (Ferrari?)
3) Ciro Cayres (Maserati)
(Abandonou: Alvaro Niemeyer – MG?)

??/?? (03/4?) – Rio de Janeiro - Maracanã
1) ???
2) McKay-Fraser (Ferrari 250MM)
(Abandonou: Alvaro Niemeyer – MG?)

I have first listed results associated with race in October so I guess 3/4 is correct for the other race. Is that OK, Chico, or could be more races there at Maracana that year?

20/2 – Rio de Janeiro
5) (Ciro?) Cayres (Allard-Cadillac) – 57 voltas

I had C. Caires so I believe Ciro is OK. But he is sometimes spelled as Caires and more often Cayren (even in this thread). Could the correct name be confirmed. I would vote for Cayres. In this race I had similary A. Caires (the only occurrence).

There was also race for under 1500cc sportscars:

Rio de Janiero Date: 20.2.1955

Circuit lenght: 1,85 km Race distance: 55,5 km Winner's average speed: 100,753 km/h

Fastest lap: A. Fourtenelle MG 1:3,5 104,76 km/h

Pos. No. Driver / Nationality Car Entrant Laps Time/retired Pos. Group Pos. Practice
1. - A. Fourtenelle MG 30 0:33:03,000
2. - D. A. Motta MG 30 0:33:10,000
3. - O. Fanucchi Porsche 30 0:32:22,000
4. - Polo MG
5. - R. Peruzzo Cisitalia 29

24/11 – II Mil Milhas Brasileiras – Interlagos
1) Aristides Bertuol/Orlando Menegas (Chevrolet-Carretera)

I have Ford Carretera.

4) Armando Zampiero/Godofredo Viana (Ferrari 3.0)
5) Corrado Manfredini/Severino Silva (Ferrari 2.0)

I had Armando Zampiero/Severino Silva and Corrado Manfredini/Godofredo Viana.

1959

07/9 – III 500 Km de Interlagos
1) Celso Lara Barberis (Maseratti 3000cc) - 154 voltas em 3h28min18s02 (142 km/h)
2) Nivola - 154 voltas em 3h28min35s04
3) Alberto Carraro - 154 voltas em 3h28min44s02
4) Antonio Mendes de Barros (Maserati 300S #3035) - 154 voltas em 3h29min35s03
5) Antonio Versa - 154 voltas em 3h29min09s02
6) Fernando Mafra Moreira - 154 voltas em 3h29min36s03

Fourth had worse time than 5th. That doesn't make sense if all had 154 laps. Also I guess that times should have format 3h2.min..s., not 3h2.min..s0. (where '.' represents one digit). Listed times are quite improbable.

26/11 – VI Mil Milhas Brasileiras – Interlagos
Waldemar Costa/Waldemar Costa Filho (Simca Chambord) – 185 voltas
12) Sérgio Peixoto de Castro/José Francisco Silva (Alfa Romeo JK) – 181 voltas

In other races Waldemir Costa, so I guess it is correct for Costa but not sue about Costa Filho.

Is it the same José Francisco as in 1960 race?

1958

07/9 – II 500 Km de Interlagos
2) Camilo Christófaro - 152 voltas em 3h33min55s07

In later races called Camillo Christófaro. What's better?

07/9 – V 500 Km de Interlagos – Interlagos
1) Roberto Galucci (Maserati-Corvette) - 154 voltas em 3h20min35s3 (147 km/h)
2) Camillo Christófaro - 150 voltas em 3h19min40s02
3) Antonio Carlos Aguiar - 150 voltas em 3h20min50s03
4) Justino de Maio - 149 voltas em 3h20min19s02
5) Christian Heins - 141 voltas em 3h20min18s03
6) Arlindo Aguiar - 140 voltas em 3h20min17s02

Strange that winner crossed the line nearly last of listed cars. Also I guess format 3h..min..s. is better than 3h..min..s0. for these results.

1965
07/9 – VIII 500 Km de Interlagos
1) Jaime Silva (Simca-Abarth) - 154 voltas em 3h28min05s (144,173 km/h)
2) Wilson Fittipaldi Jr. (Monoposto Willys) - 149 voltas
3) Ciro Cayres (Protótipo Simca) - 148 voltas
4) Eduardo Celidônio (Ferrari-Corvette) - 148 voltas
5) Antonio Carlos Aguiar (Chevrolet-Corvette) - 148 voltas

My results (and date) are completely different:

500 km Interlagos Date: 31.10.1965
Started: 16
Pos. No. Driver / Nationality Car Entrant Laps Time/retired Pos. Group Pos. Practice
1. - Jaime Silva (BR) Abarth-Simca 2000 154
2. - Wilson Fittipaldi (BR) Willys Gavea 154
3. - Luis Pereira Bueno (BR) Alpine A108 149
4. - Emerson Fittipaldi (BR) Willys Interlagos 140
5. - Waldemit Costa Willys Interlagos 133
Did not finish:
- Roberto Galucci Maserati - Chevrolet Corvette
- Ciro Caires Simca

I don't know how to explain that.

??/?? – III 12 Horas de Interlagos
1) Jaime Silva/José Fernando Martins/Ciro Cayres (Simca Abarth) – (98 km/h)
Abandonaram:
Wilson Fittipaldi Jr., Luiz Pereira Bueno, Bird Clemente, José Carlos Pace, Marivaldo Fernandes, Emerson Fittipaldi (todos com Alpine Willys)

Chico, can you, please, last sentence translate to English?

1966
27/11 – VIII Mil Milhas Brasileiras – Interlagos
6) Jaime Silva/Toco Martins (Simca)

I wonder if Toco Martins is the same person as José Fernando 'Toco' Martins and José Fernando Lopes Martins that are listed in other races.

07/9 – X 500 Km de Interlagos
1) Antonio Carlos "Totó" Porto/Buby Loureiro (Aranae - Fórmula V) - 154 voltas em 3h52min07 (128,900 km/h)

I would say this was formula car, not sports but I mention this line because I think Buby Loureiro here and Ruby Loureiro in 1962 are very likely the same person. Could it be confirmed?

Chico, please, can you write it in English?

1968
??/?? – 12 Horas de Porto Alegre
Catarino Andreatta/Vittorio Andreatta (Bino Corcel 1.440cc)
Jaime Silva/Hugo Galina (Alfa Romeo JK)

Previously called Vitorio Andreatta. What's better?
Hugo Galina - is he the same man as Ugo Galina in 1962. Both drove Alfa Romeos JK.

1969
??/?? – 1000 Km de Brasília
3) Ricardo Achcar/Aguinaldo de Góes (BMW)

I think the same as Aguinaldo de Góis in 1962 and 1963.

1963
??/?? – 1000 Km de Brasília
Terminaram a prova:
Luiz Pereira Bueno/Francisco Lameirão/Christian Heins (Gordini 40)
*****************************************************************
??/??/63 – I 1.600 Km de Interlagos
1) Simca
2) Simca
3) Simca
4) Fittipaldi/Bueno (Renault)
5) Chico Lameirao/J C Pace (Renault)
or have I got the wrong race?

About this results, I find it strange to see Lameirao already racing in 1963. I always believed his first outings were about 1966-67. But it's possible that you're right.

I think these results maybe correct as Lameirao can be found racing in 1963.

Further query: Maracana? I'm not sure if this would have been a different track to that normally called Guanabara. Both are on the edge of Guanabara bay. Can someone confirm whether these are one and the same, or different tracks (and if they are different, can someone explain the details of both)?

I have to say that from my own researches in Brazilian publications it seems no-one cared very much about spelling people's names. Hence
Ciro/Cyro Caires/Cayres
not to mention
Camilo/Camillo Cristofaro/Cristófaro/Christofaro/Christófaro
I have seen pictures of the last man's car with Camillo Christófaro painted on, which might be a clue, and I'm fairly sure that the other guy is Ciro Cayres. Or is it Cyro Caires? Or...?

Martin, thanks for you feedback.

As David wrote, brazilian press and also Internet sources usually didn't care much about spelling the correct names. I also believe that the official race lists would have the same kind of trouble, though I have never seen them to check this out. It's because of that you could find so much conflicting names in my list. If I would choose one of them, here's my decision for the names you asked:

- Ciro Cayres (the majority of my articles had it spelled like this)
- Waldemar Costa and Waldemar Costa Filho (100% sure. Besides being racing drivers, they were very famous political leaders of a city called Mogi das Cruzes. Today, guess who is the political leader there? Waldemar Costa Neto - the grandson -, of course)
- Camillo Christófaro (because that's the way his name was written in his car)
- Buby Loureiro (I have one source quoted as 'Ruby' and two - one of them more reliable - as 'Buby')
- Catharino Andreatta (Though the majority of what I wrote says 'Catarino' - without an H - a very respected journalist of his homeland Porto Alegre always wrote 'Catharino')
- Vittorio Andreatta (same reason as above)
- Ugo Galina (most reliable sources writes 'Ugo' and not 'Hugo').
- Aguinaldo de Góes (ditto)

I have first listed results associated with race in October so I guess 3/4 is correct for the other race. Is that OK, Chico, or could be more races there at Maracana that year?

There could have been another race at Maracana that year. For the 3/4 date I'm sure because of this interesting photosequence below:

Posted Image

24/11 – II Mil Milhas Brasileiras – Interlagos
1) Aristides Bertuol/Orlando Menegas (Chevrolet-Carretera)

I have Ford Carretera.

I'm almost sure it was a Ford chassis with a Chevrolet engine, this type of cars known as 'Carretera'. This is the confusion

4) Armando Zampiero/Godofredo Viana (Ferrari 3.0)
5) Corrado Manfredini/Severino Silva (Ferrari 2.0)

I had Armando Zampiero/Severino Silva and Corrado Manfredini/Godofredo Viana.

Just one source here and this is the "O Estado de S. Paulo" newspaper from 1st of december 1957, which brings the grid and starting list for the race with the pairings as stated on my list

1959

07/9 – III 500 Km de Interlagos
1) Celso Lara Barberis (Maseratti 3000cc) - 154 voltas em 3h28min18s02 (142 km/h)
2) Nivola - 154 voltas em 3h28min35s04
3) Alberto Carraro - 154 voltas em 3h28min44s02

I believe you're right about the digits. All the results I have from the 500Km were taken from a list compiled by a journalist and published in a website. I've already noticed the discrepancies, but I've choose to post the results anyway because they're all I have. Further research I intend to do in the future may solve our doubts.

26/11 – VI Mil Milhas Brasileiras – Interlagos
12) Sérgio Peixoto de Castro/José Francisco Silva (Alfa Romeo JK) – 181 voltas

Is it the same José Francisco as in 1960 race?

No idea. It's possible because of the proximity of the dates, but cars driven by 'José Francisco' and 'José Francisco Silva' are different. Unfortunately, I have just one source from each race (both of them are "O Estado de S. Paulo" reports) and the names are listed like this

07/9 – V 500 Km de Interlagos – Interlagos
1) Roberto Galucci (Maserati-Corvette) - 154 voltas em 3h20min35s3 (147 km/h)
2) Camillo Christófaro - 150 voltas em 3h19min40s02

Strange that winner crossed the line nearly last of listed cars. Also I guess format 3h..min..s. is better than 3h..min..s0. for these results.

Same thing. Just these results I've found in Internet...

1965

4. - Emerson Fittipaldi (BR) Willys Interlagos 140
5. - Waldemit Costa Willys Interlagos 133
Did not finish:
- Roberto Galucci Maserati - Chevrolet Corvette
- Ciro Caires Simca

I don't know how to explain that.

Ditto. Sure I need more research about the 500 Km. Just not to say that my source is complete unreliable, their first 5 at the 1971 edition (that with the big sportscars, are the same as in your website and also in another website.

Yes, they are the same person

Chico, please, can you write it in English?

* - Race interrupted at 1st lap, because of an accident with Carol (NOT 'Carlo', my tiping mistake) Figueiredo.
** - Fatal accidente with Sérgio Cardoso (Alfa Giulia) during practice; and with Joaquim Carlos "Cacaio" Telles de Mattos, runned over by a car during the race

This particular race was a complete mess in a very dangerous circuit at the streets of Petrópolis. Cardoso had a fatal accident during practice and there were a very heavy atmosphere before the start. Right at the end of 1st lap, Carol Figueiredo crashed in the same curve where Cardoso died, and chaos took place. Several people runned to the place to help taking the driver out of car. Firemen trucks and ambulance entered the tracks immediatly, unaware that there were still racing cars lapping around. Mattos, who was a driver but in this day was just assisting, entered the track in order to stop the trucks and ambulance, and was runned over by Luiz Pereira Bueno's car. The race was red flagged and never restarted.

I think these results maybe correct as Lameirao can be found racing in 1963.

Ooops, I haven't seen that one. Thanks!

Also, Darren:

I'm don't know much about races in Rio, as I'm Sao Paulo based. As I've interviewed Hermano da Silva Ramos, he said the race below was in 'Barra da Tijuca', though I have it as 'Guanabara':
??/10/1960 – GP do Rio de Janeiro – Guanabara
1) Mário Araújo Cabral (POR/Maserati 3000cc) – 35 voltas em 1h08m43s3
2) Hermano da Silva Ramos (Porsche 1500cc) – 35 voltas em 1h09m28s9
3) Daniel Magalhães (POR/Porsche 1500cc)
4) Henrique Casini (Maserati 4500cc)
5) Luis Milan (Ferrari 5000cc)
6) Francis Francis (Lotus Elite)
7) Annie Soisbault (BEL/Porsche 1600cc)
Retirements:
Luciano della Porta (Ferrari 250TR)
David Piper (Lotus)

So, this is what I know about Rio tracks:
- Gávea (street circuit, 1st race in 1933, last in 1954 - I think, but I read somewhere it was used until 1958)
- Maracana (street circuit, used at least in the 50's.).
- Flamengo (street circuit, used at least in the 40's.).
- Ilha do Fundao (street circuit, 1st race in 1964.)
- Barra da Tijuca (street circuit, used in the 60's and 70's)
- Barra da Tijuca (permanent circuit. The Jacarepaguá circuit was opened in 1978 but they began to construct it in 1971 and abandoned for lack of money. There was left a paved surface with a completely different lay-out from what the circuit became. This surface was used between 1971 as 1977 - more or less - and was unoficially known as the "Barra da Tijuca" circuit)
- Jacarepaguá (permanent circuit you all know. It contains the oval track called "Emerson Fittipaldi oval")

Which one of them is the Guanabara track? No idea! Only the Flamengo and the Ilha do Fundao are neighborhoods located exactly AT the Guanabara Bay. The problem here is that the province of Rio de Janeiro was known as "Guanabara" until the middle 60's, so I wouldn't be surprised if different circuits from the period before were named Guanabara. Also here, we need more research...

Chico and David, thank you very much for your very quick replies.

Also, Chico, I would be happy if you post here your further research about 500 km Interlagos or any other race in the future.

By the way, I have also some results from early seventies. Do I have to post them here?

Chico,

My fiancee is from Rio, but unfortunately she had never heard of any of these circuits beyond Jacarepagua. She also said that Rio state was known as Guanabara, but then so was the city. So who knows....... I may be able to persuade her to visit the city library when she goes home to research this a bit more.

Do you have any info on the following circuits also used:-
Araraquara
Petropolis (home of the Brazilian Royal Family?)
Piracicaba
Porto Alegre
Recife
Barra da Tijuca
Ilha do Fundao
Flamengo (a football club as I know it!)

I think that I may have unwittingly been on bits of some of these Rio circuits when I went there four years ago!

Cheers!

Darren,

The info I have is not much:

Araraquara
It's a city in the Sao Paulo province. Street circuit with 3978m. 1st race was in 1962 and I only have results for this and for another race the following year.

Petropolis (home of the Brazilian Royal Family?)
Yes, it's the Royal Family citiy. All I know is a street circuit. There was also a hillclimb in the road Rio-Petrópolis (from Sao Joao do Meriti to Quitandinha neighborhoods). These are the winners I have from this particular race:
Hans Stuck (1932)
Júlio Morais (1933)
Manoel de Teffé (1937 and 1943)
Chico Landi (1944)
Catharino Andreatta (1945)
Gino Bianco (1946)

Piracicaba
It's a city in the Sao Paulo province. Street circuit used in the 60's. No idea about the track lenght.

Porto Alegre
Street circuit also known as "Circuito da Cavalhada" or also "Circuito da Pedra Redonda". Last used in 1968. No idea about the lenght. Here you'll find a track map:
http://www.conex.com...cavalhadapq.jpg

Recife
Really don't know about this circuit. Probably a street circuit, as the only permanent track at Pernambuco province (which Recife is the main city) is the Autódromo de Caruaru:
http://www.speedonli...sil-caruaru.jpg

Barra da Tijuca
Street circuit at the avenue along the beach of Barra da Tijuca. Used mainly in the 60s, a bit in the 70s. As Barra da Tijuca became more populated, it was impossible to race as there were always people crossing the track, coming to and going from the beach.

Ilha do Fundao
Located at the streets of Cidade Universitária, the campus of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The only info I have is "more than 2km length". 1st race in 1964.

Flamengo (a football club as I know it!)
The Flamengo - football club - was born in the Flamengo neighborhood. Later, the club was moved to the Gávea neighborhood, but kept it's name. About the racetrack: don't know much, only that included the streets at the Aterro do Flamengo (right in front the Santos Dumont airport - the small airport from the city. If you flew from Rio to Sao Paulo, sure you were there).

Chico - unfortunately I didn't use Santos Dumont - I had a Varig flight which was going from Sao Paulo Garulhos to Brasilia via Rio International.

Thanks for your track info!

I saw mention of Furia-Lamborghini. Does anyone have a picture and specification of that car. I wasn't aware of any use of Lamborghini V12 in racing back then.

Udo,

It's my pleasure! I've always regarded TNF as a place to exchange info and knowledge. I've learned some much from here so I'm always glad to share what I know.

dmj,

You can find pictures of this car here:

Chico, thank you very much for posting results since 1970.

I've looked at your previous answers and I need to add correct my previous message:

25/1 – Salvador
1) Chico Landi (Ferrari 2.0)

I have Ferrari 250MM 0304. Was it really Ferrari 2.0?

My sources stands one for Ferrari 2.0 and TWO for Ferrari 250MM 0304, so I don't know why I've picked the odd one.

I am sorry, I made a mistake. It should be chassis 0274. I don't know where was my mind when I typed it. There is no mention about 0304 in my data. It even wasn't 250MM but 625TF.

I will believe your pairings. Chico, could you post here also grid/entry list?

I also noticed this:

1966
??/? - ????? – Novo autódromo do Rio de Janeiro (Jacarepaguá)
1) Carol Figueiredo (Alpine Willys)
2) José Carlos Pace (Kharmann Ghia)

Why it is called Jacarepaguá when the new autodrom was opened in 1978?

Chico,
thank you for link to picture of this nice Lambo-engined car.
But I certainly hope they didn't butchered a Miura for that engine... :) :D
An Espada would be more bearable, but I would prefer if Bianco bought a new engine from Lambo.

* - Wilson Fittipaldi Jr. campeão da II Copa Brasil

I have date of first listed race 10/12 and the third race 17/12. It is little strange as these are two consecutive weekends and when would be the second race held?. First and third race were held at Interlagos, I am not sure about the second one.
More results:

Interlagos Date: 10.12.1972

Circuit lenght: Race distance: Winner's average speed: 171,661 km/h

Fastest lap: Jorge de Bagration Porsche 908 2:57,6

Did not start:
- Gianpiero Moretti (I) Ferrari 512S 1022/1032 Scuderia Picchio Rosso

Copa do Brasil Round: 3
500 km Interlagos ( I don't believe now it was 500 kms race and I even doubt it was Interlagos at all. Chico's AVG speedssuggest that all races were held in one place. If that is correct than I believe in Sao Paulo)
Interlagos Date: 20.12.1970
1. - Emerson Fittipaldi (BR) Lola T210 Ford
2. - Gianpiero Moretti (I) Ferrari 512S 1022/1032 Scuderia Picchio Rosso

There are little differences in dates but I can't comment it. Also I don't know how it was officially called. Here Chico had Copa Brasil, and I had Coupes du Brésil or Copa do Brasil. Does anybody know.

1974
28/7 – I 12 Horas de Goiânia
1) Marivaldo Fernandes/Bob Sharp (Maverick Quadrijet)

Bob Sharp appears in Brazilian races more or less regularly but I wonder if it is American IMSA driver that raced Datsuns in 1970s or any other man of same name.

1970
08/11 – Prova de Inauguração - Tarumã
3) Camillo Christófaro (Carreteira)

Is any difference between Carreteira and cars called Ford Carretera?

04/7 – III 6 Horas de Interlagos
1) Lian Abreu Duarte/Fracisco Lameirão (Porsche 910)
4) Jaime Silva (Protótipo Fúria-BMW)

I had with this date at Interlagos associated this result:
3rd Herbert Müller Ferrari 512M

I suppose it is the same race.

There are again some little name spelling problems (Artur Bragantini or Arthur Bragantini and few others. I understand press didn't care about it much)

I have another race from 1971:

Sao Paulo
Tournoi de Sao-Paulo Date: 11.12.1971
Started: 27
Circuit lenght: Race distance: Winner's average speed: 164,27 km/h
Fastest lap: Luis Pereira Bueno Porsche 908/02 2:50,8 167,775 km/h

Martin,

Sorry it took so long to reply you. I really couldn't find the time to spend on Internet the past week.

1) About Landi's sports Ferrari, you wrote:
"I am sorry, I made a mistake. It should be chassis 0274. I don't know where was my mind when I typed it. There is no mention about 0304 in my data. It even wasn't 250MM but 625TF."

Well, it seems that your chassis number is right, but what about the model? Check this link:
http://www.barchetta...274MM.250MM.htm

2) The grid and entry list for the sportscars race in Sao Paulo 1957 (the one with Fangio) you'll find on my last post at the first page of this very thread.

3) When I wrote "1966 Novo Autódromo do Rio de Janeiro (Jacarepaguá)" I certainly made a mistake. I'm willing to find out what exactly was this new autodrome, but it will take a while until I fly to Brazil to research.

4) "Copa Brasil" or "Copa do Brasil"? I really don't know. Maybe, the brazilian press was confused with race names as they were with drivers names... "Coupe du Brèsil" it's the french translation for "Copa do Brasil".

5) I also don't know if the Bob Sharp that raced in Brazil also raced in USA, but it's very unlikely...

6) About "Carreteira". MY MISTAKE! The correct term is "carretera" (without an 'I' in the middle), because these type of cars were developed in Argentina. I translated the name (from spanish to portuguese) and that's wrong! But a carretera can be a Ford one or also a Fiat one, for example. It depends on which chassis they transformed into the shape of a carretera (though Ford was the most common).

Here you'll see a Ford carretera, used by Catharino Andreatta in the 50's:
http://www.conex.com.../catharino3.jpg

And here is Christófaros carretera, which I'm 90% sure (!?!) it was built over a Chevrolet chassis (then it was a Chevrolet carretera) :

Last but not least, thank you so much for your additional information!

Chico, thank you for your answers:

1) I think it was almost definitely 250MM-274MM. I may have not written that clear. The referrence to the 625TF to chassis 0304 that was wrong at that race.

2) I am sorry, I see now I already had it from your previous message in this thread. Thanks!

3), 4) Thank you.

5) OK, I would believe they are two different persons.

6) Thank you for comments about Carreteras. I am not sure if it was written elsewhere but how could be carretera translated to English?

"Carretera" means "Road" in english. The name came because these kind of cars were originally developed in Argentina to race in dirty roads in this country. Fangio's first races were with carreteras.

Personally, I wouldn't translate it (though I did it before, hehehe). It will be like translating "deja vu" to "already seen".

Thanks for your add Udo!

Just two smalls corrections:

Race 1: 6/12
3rd Antonio da Matta (not "de Matta". He is the father of Cristiano da Matta, driver of Newman-Hass in Champcars)[B/] Alfa Romeo T33

Race 4: 27/12
6th Silva Furin (?) - Chico, is this the correct name of that car?
The correct name is "Fúria", which means "Rage" in english or "Wut" auf Deutsch. His driver was Jayme Silva.

... just to fill a little gap in the result sheets ...

2° Mil Milhas Brasileiras 1957

Yes, that was the edition from which Chico Landi was disqualified ... in fact, he and his partner (name not mentioned in the report I have, but according to "Chico" José Gimenez Lopes, see above) finished first, but were finally disqualified because the co-driver did drive without turning the rear lights on! The reason to take such a relatively small infringement of the rules so serious was probably the fatal crash of Djalma Cuciano Pessolato during the race: this - and a number of lesser accidents - were caused by animals on the track - apparently a hazard not recognized by the organisers before!

After the start of the race, the lead was taken by Pessolato/Cristófaro's Chevrolet Comette. When the car made a pit-stop in the 20th lap, Alfredo Santilli took over the lead, only to lose it a little later when he had an encounter with an animal, leaving his car badly damaged (no info about the animal). Now Chico Landi went in front - a lead the old master and his partner was not to lose until the finish of the race after a little more than 16 hours. The fatal accident happend in the 44th lap, when Pessolato tried to avoid an animal, lost control of the car, bounced repeatedly into the barrier and was killed by the impact.

After the disqualification of the first finisher, Bertuol and Menegaz were declared winners:

1 Aristides Bertuol & Orlando Menegaz, Chevrolet
2 Catarino Andreatta & Diogo Luis Ellwanger, Ford
3 Júlio Andreatta & Dirceu Oliveira, Ford
4 José Guidini & Paschoal Landi, Ford
5 Luis Valente & Arlindo Aguiar, Ford
6 José Azmus & Joao Galvani, Ford
7 Breno Fornari & Afonso Hoch, Ford
8 Flávio Beneduce & Celso Lara Barberis, Ford
9 Luís Americo Margarido & José Júlio Margarido, Chevrolet
10 Emílio Zambello & Rugero Peruzzo, Fiat
11 Euclides Bastos & Germano Schlogl, Ford
12 Karl Iwers & Jorge Truda, DKW
DQ Chico Landi & José Gimenez Lopes, no info on car
DNF Djalma Pessolato & Camilo Cristófaro, Chevrolet Comette
DNF Alfredo Santilli & ?, no info on car
Note: Paschoal Landi is, of course, the younger brother of Chico

By the way, on the same page there is a short report about the Sports-car race held at Interlagos on December 1, 1957. The result given is slightly different form what David and "Chico" had:

1 Juan Manuel Fangio, Maserati 3000 cc, 123.605 km/h
2 Henrique Casini, Ferrari 3000 cc
3 Francisco Landi, Maserati 3000 cc
4 Godofredo Viana Filho & Armando Zampiero, Ferrari 3000 cc
5 Álvaro Varanda, Ferrari 3000 cc
6 Corrado Manfredini & Severino Silva, Maserati 2000 cc
7 "Radinni", Porsche 1500 cc

O Volante: Thank you for your results. I found your results rather reliable. I am only not sure if Álvaro Varanda and "Niquinho" in the sportscar race could be the same person or "Niquinho" was DNA. Any idea?
Would be great if you find more results.

Martin,
I'm very sorry, but can't add anything - neither on "Niquinho" nor more results: in fact, I was explicitely looking for Brazilian stuff when I went through "Mundo Motorizado". But except another confirmation of what is by now well known about the 5 November 1960 Guanabara race, there was nothing ...

Giacomo, in case you are still interested in this car, the answer may be very simple. The picture name reads 'Formar' among the others, and I know that there was such a car. I have a picture of a 1969 Formar-Chevrolet, Jorge Cupeiro's car, but I don't remember the source of the photo (it was a blog, if I recall correctly), so I'd better not show it up here.

Hello everybody, just joined the Atlas forum as well and would like to start with Sports Car Racing in South America (Brazil, Argentina, Mexiko, Venezuela etc) in the 1950ies. I have only sparse information on races, race dates, results and which races were held at all. There must have been a lot of these races places like Mendoza, Guadalajara (MEX), Rio, Buenos Aires (and here I refer to non-championship races, of course), Boavista, Salvador, Mar del Plata and the Raffaela 500 Miles. With great interest I read the threads on Chico Landi - he won the Salvador race in 1954 but thats all I know about this event.
Has anybody records or stories about these races?

Dear Udo,do you want informations about rio de janeiro races '50/60?

Hi to all (after a long time!!!)

Many years ago, while leaving in Venezuela, and when I was about to finish my college degree and working on my thesis about Venezuela's Autoracing History, I met a guy called Gabriel Martel. It was during a race in Maracaibo (Estado Zulia, Venezuela). We talked a little bit and he asked me to come back the next day, early in the morning. We met at the track at about 5 am, and he gave me two huge books with a lot of papers, time charts, etc.

He explained to me that years before he used to work for the Touring y Automovil Club de Venezuela (TACV), taking care of races registration, paperwork, race statistics, and many other things. When he left -apparently not in very good terms, he took those books with him (I have different versions of this same story, so I dont know which one is true...) The thing is that those books where the racing memory of Venezuela. They contained information about almost every single race from 1948 on...

Gabriel told me: "All you can copy in a day, it's yours." I was there as a Journalist and supposed to make interviews and reports during the racing day. No need to say, I did none! I took those books with me to the top floor at the Tower, got my old tape recorder (yes, tape!) and started reading & recording... I read non-stop for about eight hours...

Not sure if you already have this information... but could it be of your interest... Just as it was on those books... I was never able to confirm some of this information... There was no internet at the time, and getting in touch with people was a challenge. I traveled as much as I could to make research, but it was a very difficult task (to say the least!), especially with my budget...

I think I mentionned the site Luik Racing before, but it is geting better every time :

http://www.luik.com.br/

They just published a very detailed article (15 parts !) on the Maserati 300S racing in Brazil. I have only read a couple of the first chapters, but it expands (as well as conflict) on W. Baumer's brave try in his book.

COLOMBIA

1954
-/- Circuito Central Colombiano
1 Bob Griebling (Fordillac)
2 Luis Garzón (Chrysler)
3 Carl Partsch (VW-Porsche)

Googling for the complete different race I found the next information from the 'Sports illustrated' (http://sportsillustr...449/5/index.htm) issue from 30.08.1954:
WILLIAM GRIEBLING, Lexington, Ohio, 1,000-mile Co-ombian Central Circuit race, in 21:45.46, Bogota.
As magazine usually refers the races from the last week and past races in Colombia mentioned in this thread were held at Sunday, I can assume that the date of the race was 22nd August.
But one thing is confusing me - the duration of the race. Almost 22 hours without co-driver? I suppose it is impossible. Can it be the 1000 mile race (rally?) on Colombian roads with finish stage on the circuit in Bogota?

I made search through newspapers archive and found reports about this race!
As I assumed, the race was held on roads of Colombia, not on track. And according to the newspapers' reports, the finish of the race was on 16th August. And if I understood correctly, the start was on 9th August.

I made search through newspapers archive and found reports about this race!
As I assumed, the race was held on roads of Colombia, not on track. And according to the newspapers' reports, the finish of the race was on 16th August. And if I understood correctly, the start was on 9th August.

Can anybody help with Spanish text? I can't allocate where the text about the race is, and where - about other sports' events.

Oleksij,

I came to this thread checking my files on Brazilian drivers and found your request for help regarding the Spanish text in the Colombian newspaper. Let's see if I can help.

As you suspected the race was held in public roads, 5 stages in total:

1st - Bogotá to Manizales
2nd - Manizales to Medellin
3rd - Medellin to Pereira
4th - Pereira to Cali
5th - Cali to Bogotá

Not all distances are clear but each stage was roughly close to 300km. There were 22 competitors in the entry list (list is on your second link and easy to spot), 21 started the race and 14 finished it.

The winner was William Griebling and it took him 21h 45m 46s to reach the finish line. The list of finishers with their race times is also easily understandable in the penultimate link. Curiously, there is not a single reference about what type of cars they were driving but from the photos they look very much like Argentinian "carreteras". There were two classes, one for "acondiconados", which means they have been transformed from their original showroom origin, and another one for touring cars (winner Seidner), presumably closer to showroom specimens.

The text also reveals this was the fourth edition of the race (called Circuito Central Colombiano, something akin to Central Colombian Circuit), the previous editions having taken place in 1949 (winner Franz J. Leeb), 1952 (winner Luis Rafael Garzon) and 1953 (winner William Griebling).
Hope it serves your purpose but let me know if you need more detail.

Since the reason from me to come here were the Brazilian drivers and even if the information is pretty old, may I take the opportunity to correct a few typos that appeared in the first posts and that are sadly being perpetuated in a lot of sites.

So, there is no Ciro Olmiras or Alberto Babás. They never existed. The same for Rosario Mauaur. The former is of course Ciro Cayres, the second is Alberto Rabay and the last is Rosalvo Mansur. And Artur Troula, not Traula is the right way to write it. (can be checked in www.bandeiraquadriculada.com.br for those who can read portuguese)
