Very unlikely, because the rules at that time wouldn't allow a racing car at Mil Milhas. I've seen photos from Landi in a MN Maserati, but I guess (only guess) that he raced'em in the 500Km of 1957 and 58.

I just found an old tape with a conversation I had with Zambello. Though he tells nothing about this specific race, he owned a workshop together with Ruggero Peruzzo where they prepared cars for racing themselves and even scored some wins (his quote). Which makes his participation in this car very plausible.

All I know about those December 1955 races is that they were cancelled. I don’t know if there was any on-track activity at Rio, but they certainly practised at Interlagos, where Chico Landi was fastest ahead of Godofredo Viana, Celso Lara Barberis, Alberto Rabay and Henrique Casini, cars unknown.

I have checked all Chico's results against mine and made some comments with only very few really new information:

I had C. Caires so I believe Ciro is OK. But he is sometimes spelled as Caires and more often Cayren (even in this thread). Could the correct name be confirmed. I would vote for Cayres. In this race I had similary A. Caires (the only occurrence).

There was also race for under 1500cc sportscars:

Fourth had worse time than 5th. That doesn't make sense if all had 154 laps. Also I guess that times should have format 3h2.min..s., not 3h2.min..s0. (where '.' represents one digit). Listed times are quite improbable.

About this results, I find it strange to see Lameirao already racing in 1963. I always believed his first outings were about 1966-67. But it's possible that you're right.


I think these results maybe correct as Lameirao can be found racing in 1963.

Further query: Maracana? I'm not sure if this would have been a different track to that normally called Guanabara. Both are on the edge of Guanabara bay. Can someone confirm whether these are one and the same, or different tracks (and if they are different, can someone explain the details of both)?

I have to say that from my own researches in Brazilian publications it seems no-one cared very much about spelling people's names. Hence

As David wrote, brazilian press and also Internet sources usually didn't care much about spelling the correct names. I also believe that the official race lists would have the same kind of trouble, though I have never seen them to check this out. It's because of that you could find so much conflicting names in my list. If I would choose one of them, here's my decision for the names you asked:

- Ciro Cayres (the majority of my articles had it spelled like this)
- Waldemar Costa and Waldemar Costa Filho (100% sure. Besides being racing drivers, they were very famous political leaders of a city called Mogi das Cruzes. Today, guess who is the political leader there? Waldemar Costa Neto - the grandson -, of course)
- Camillo Christófaro (because that's the way his name was written in his car)
- Buby Loureiro (I have one source quoted as 'Ruby' and two - one of them more reliable - as 'Buby')
- Catharino Andreatta (Though the majority of what I wrote says 'Catarino' - without an H - a very respected journalist of his homeland Porto Alegre always wrote 'Catharino')
- Vittorio Andreatta (same reason as above)
- Ugo Galina (most reliable sources writes 'Ugo' and not 'Hugo').
- Aguinaldo de Góes (ditto)

I believe you're right about the digits. All the results I have from the 500Km were taken from a list compiled by a journalist and published in a website. I've already noticed the discrepancies, but I've choose to post the results anyway because they're all I have. Further research I intend to do in the future may solve our doubts.

This particular race was a complete mess in a very dangerous circuit at the streets of Petrópolis. Cardoso had a fatal accident during practice and there were a very heavy atmosphere before the start. Right at the end of 1st lap, Carol Figueiredo crashed in the same curve where Cardoso died, and chaos took place. Several people runned to the place to help taking the driver out of car. Firemen trucks and ambulance entered the tracks immediatly, unaware that there were still racing cars lapping around. Mattos, who was a driver but in this day was just assisting, entered the track in order to stop the trucks and ambulance, and was runned over by Luiz Pereira Bueno's car. The race was red flagged and never restarted.

So, this is what I know about Rio tracks:
- Gávea (street circuit, 1st race in 1933, last in 1954 - I think, but I read somewhere it was used until 1958)
- Maracana (street circuit, used at least in the 50's.).
- Flamengo (street circuit, used at least in the 40's.).
- Ilha do Fundao (street circuit, 1st race in 1964.)
- Barra da Tijuca (street circuit, used in the 60's and 70's)
- Barra da Tijuca (permanent circuit. The Jacarepaguá circuit was opened in 1978 but they began to construct it in 1971 and abandoned for lack of money. There was left a paved surface with a completely different lay-out from what the circuit became. This surface was used between 1971 as 1977 - more or less - and was unoficially known as the "Barra da Tijuca" circuit)
- Jacarepaguá (permanent circuit you all know. It contains the oval track called "Emerson Fittipaldi oval")

Which one of them is the Guanabara track? No idea! Only the Flamengo and the Ilha do Fundao are neighborhoods located exactly AT the Guanabara Bay. The problem here is that the province of Rio de Janeiro was known as "Guanabara" until the middle 60's, so I wouldn't be surprised if different circuits from the period before were named Guanabara. Also here, we need more research...

My fiancee is from Rio, but unfortunately she had never heard of any of these circuits beyond Jacarepagua. She also said that Rio state was known as Guanabara, but then so was the city. So who knows....... I may be able to persuade her to visit the city library when she goes home to research this a bit more.

The info I have is not much:

Araraquara
It's a city in the Sao Paulo province. Street circuit with 3978m. 1st race was in 1962 and I only have results for this and for another race the following year.

Petropolis (home of the Brazilian Royal Family?)
Yes, it's the Royal Family citiy. All I know is a street circuit. There was also a hillclimb in the road Rio-Petrópolis (from Sao Joao do Meriti to Quitandinha neighborhoods). These are the winners I have from this particular race:

Piracicaba
It's a city in the Sao Paulo province. Street circuit used in the 60's. No idea about the track lenght.

Street circuit also known as "Circuito da Cavalhada" or also "Circuito da Pedra Redonda". Last used in 1968. No idea about the lenght. Here you'll find a track map:

Recife
Really don't know about this circuit. Probably a street circuit, as the only permanent track at Pernambuco province (which Recife is the main city) is the Autódromo de Caruaru:

Barra da Tijuca
Street circuit at the avenue along the beach of Barra da Tijuca. Used mainly in the 60s, a bit in the 70s. As Barra da Tijuca became more populated, it was impossible to race as there were always people crossing the track, coming to and going from the beach.

Ilha do Fundao
Located at the streets of Cidade Universitária, the campus of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The only info I have is "more than 2km length". 1st race in 1964.

Flamengo (a football club as I know it!)
The Flamengo - football club - was born in the Flamengo neighborhood. Later, the club was moved to the Gávea neighborhood, but kept it's name. About the racetrack: don't know much, only that included the streets at the Aterro do Flamengo (right in front the Santos Dumont airport - the small airport from the city. If you flew from Rio to Sao Paulo, sure you were there).

2) The grid and entry list for the sportscars race in Sao Paulo 1957 (the one with Fangio) you'll find on my last post at the first page of this very thread.


3) When I wrote "1966 Novo Autódromo do Rio de Janeiro (Jacarepaguá)" I certainly made a mistake. I'm willing to find out what exactly was this new autodrome, but it will take a while until I fly to Brazil to research.

4) "Copa Brasil" or "Copa do Brasil"? I really don't know. Maybe, the brazilian press was confused with race names as they were with drivers names... "Coupe du Brèsil" it's the french translation for "Copa do Brasil".

5) I also don't know if the Bob Sharp that raced in Brazil also raced in USA, but it's very unlikely...

6) About "Carreteira". MY MISTAKE! The correct term is "carretera" (without an 'I' in the middle), because these type of cars were developed in Argentina. I translated the name (from spanish to portuguese) and that's wrong! But a carretera can be a Ford one or also a Fiat one, for example. It depends on which chassis they transformed into the shape of a carretera (though Ford was the most common).

"Carretera" means "Road" in english. The name came because these kind of cars were originally developed in Argentina to race in dirty roads in this country. Fangio's first races were with carreteras.

Personally, I wouldn't translate it (though I did it before, hehehe). It will be like translating "deja vu" to "already seen".

2° Mil Milhas Brasileiras 1957

Yes, that was the edition from which Chico Landi was disqualified ... in fact, he and his partner (name not mentioned in the report I have, but according to "Chico" José Gimenez Lopes, see above) finished first, but were finally disqualified because the co-driver did drive without turning the rear lights on! The reason to take such a relatively small infringement of the rules so serious was probably the fatal crash of Djalma Cuciano Pessolato during the race: this - and a number of lesser accidents - were caused by animals on the track - apparently a hazard not recognized by the organisers before!

After the start of the race, the lead was taken by Pessolato/Cristófaro's Chevrolet Comette. When the car made a pit-stop in the 20th lap, Alfredo Santilli took over the lead, only to lose it a little later when he had an encounter with an animal, leaving his car badly damaged (no info about the animal). Now Chico Landi went in front - a lead the old master and his partner was not to lose until the finish of the race after a little more than 16 hours. The fatal accident happend in the 44th lap, when Pessolato tried to avoid an animal, lost control of the car, bounced repeatedly into the barrier and was killed by the impact.

After the disqualification of the first finisher, Bertuol and Menegaz were declared winners:

Giacomo, in case you are still interested in this car, the answer may be very simple. The picture name reads 'Formar' among the others, and I know that there was such a car. I have a picture of a 1969 Formar-Chevrolet, Jorge Cupeiro's car, but I don't remember the source of the photo (it was a blog, if I recall correctly), so I'd better not show it up here.

Hello everybody, just joined the Atlas forum as well and would like to start with Sports Car Racing in South America (Brazil, Argentina, Mexiko, Venezuela etc) in the 1950ies. I have only sparse information on races, race dates, results and which races were held at all. There must have been a lot of these races places like Mendoza, Guadalajara (MEX), Rio, Buenos Aires (and here I refer to non-championship races, of course), Boavista, Salvador, Mar del Plata and the Raffaela 500 Miles. With great interest I read the threads on Chico Landi - he won the Salvador race in 1954 but thats all I know about this event.
Has anybody records or stories about these races?

Hi to all (after a long time!!!)

Many years ago, while leaving in Venezuela, and when I was about to finish my college degree and working on my thesis about Venezuela's Autoracing History, I met a guy called Gabriel Martel. It was during a race in Maracaibo (Estado Zulia, Venezuela). We talked a little bit and he asked me to come back the next day, early in the morning. We met at the track at about 5 am, and he gave me two huge books with a lot of papers, time charts, etc.

He explained to me that years before he used to work for the Touring y Automovil Club de Venezuela (TACV), taking care of races registration, paperwork, race statistics, and many other things. When he left -apparently not in very good terms, he took those books with him (I have different versions of this same story, so I dont know which one is true...) The thing is that those books where the racing memory of Venezuela. They contained information about almost every single race from 1948 on...

Gabriel told me: "All you can copy in a day, it's yours." I was there as a Journalist and supposed to make interviews and reports during the racing day. No need to say, I did none! I took those books with me to the top floor at the Tower, got my old tape recorder (yes, tape!) and started reading & recording... I read non-stop for about eight hours...

Not sure if you already have this information... but could it be of your interest... Just as it was on those books... I was never able to confirm some of this information... There was no internet at the time, and getting in touch with people was a challenge. I traveled as much as I could to make research, but it was a very difficult task (to say the least!), especially with my budget...

As magazine usually refers the races from the last week and past races in Colombia mentioned in this thread were held at Sunday, I can assume that the date of the race was 22nd August.
But one thing is confusing me - the duration of the race. Almost 22 hours without co-driver? I suppose it is impossible. Can it be the 1000 mile race (rally?) on Colombian roads with finish stage on the circuit in Bogota?

I came to this thread checking my files on Brazilian drivers and found your request for help regarding the Spanish text in the Colombian newspaper. Let's see if I can help.

As you suspected the race was held in public roads, 5 stages in total:

1st - Bogotá to Manizales
2nd - Manizales to Medellin
3rd - Medellin to Pereira
4th - Pereira to Cali
5th - Cali to Bogotá

Not all distances are clear but each stage was roughly close to 300km. There were 22 competitors in the entry list (list is on your second link and easy to spot), 21 started the race and 14 finished it.

The winner was William Griebling and it took him 21h 45m 46s to reach the finish line. The list of finishers with their race times is also easily understandable in the penultimate link. Curiously, there is not a single reference about what type of cars they were driving but from the photos they look very much like Argentinian "carreteras". There were two classes, one for "acondiconados", which means they have been transformed from their original showroom origin, and another one for touring cars (winner Seidner), presumably closer to showroom specimens.

The text also reveals this was the fourth edition of the race (called Circuito Central Colombiano, something akin to Central Colombian Circuit), the previous editions having taken place in 1949 (winner Franz J. Leeb), 1952 (winner Luis Rafael Garzon) and 1953 (winner William Griebling).
Hope it serves your purpose but let me know if you need more detail.

Since the reason from me to come here were the Brazilian drivers and even if the information is pretty old, may I take the opportunity to correct a few typos that appeared in the first posts and that are sadly being perpetuated in a lot of sites.

So, there is no Ciro Olmiras or Alberto Babás. They never existed. The same for Rosario Mauaur. The former is of course Ciro Cayres, the second is Alberto Rabay and the last is Rosalvo Mansur. And Artur Troula, not Traula is the right way to write it. (can be checked in www.bandeiraquadriculada.com.br for those who can read portuguese)
